How to Survive Your Own Cooking [Class 3]

"Today, we are going to be looking at pasta," Lulu began, as she leaned against the desk at the front of the home ec room. "There are many ways to eat pasta; most involve some form of sauce." She moved to her demonstration table, taking out a knife, a bulb of garlic, and an onion. "Pretty much any of them will require at least one, if not both, of these, so I'm going to start by showing you how to prepare them."

She demonstrated first, how to peel and mince a clove of garlic. "The thing to remember is that the clove is only one of these little pieces," she added. "The whole is called a bulb. Be careful you don't use a bulb when it calls only for a clove." She also diced the onion, doing it slowly enough that those unfamiliar with a knife should see how she did it.

"At your stations," she said, moving away from the table and washing her hands, "you will see three recipes. You get to choose only from two of them; the third is there only for your reference. You have the choice between the alfredo and the tomato sauce, as the pasta aglio e olio is a little bit too easy, I think, even for this class." She grinned, taking away any sting that might have accompanied the words. "I will add: if you are making the tomato sauce, start cooking the pasta around the time you add the vegetables, so that they'll be ready at as close to the same time as possible.

"Everything you need is at your stations. Pair up -- with a new partner, just as last week -- and begin."

"I don't think you're supposed to watch it," Chad said. "It's, like, bad luck or something. You can help me put all the tomatoes and olive oil and seasonings in to start the sauce, though. You good with measuring?"

He wasn't; that was his main reason for asking.

"Oh! Yes!" She moved over to help. It turned out that Cassandra actually was pretty good at measuring things. As long as they weren't related to cooking.

"Good," Chad nodded. "I'll put the tomatoes and olive oil in and start stirring and while I'd doing that, you can add the list of seasonings there at the bottom, see 'em?"

Cassandra had learned enough reading to muddle through the list of ingredients. Unfortunately she hadn't gotten around to units of measure yet. She turned to ask Chad for help, but he looked busy, so she just... guessed.

Somehow she even managed to get pretty close on most of them.

And it was actually probably closer than Chad would have gotten. He liked being a little...excessive with flavourings sometime. "How's the water so far?" he asked, stirring it in after all the seasonings had been added, slowly disappearing into the concoction.

Cassandra glanced up from what she was doing to look at the pot. "It's just bubbling," she told Chad as she turned back to what she was doing.

Chad removed the spoon from the pan, grunting thoughtfully. He reached over and turned up the heat on the sauce, realizing he hadn't been paying much attention to the order of things, but he figured it would be okay. "Well, guess we just wait on both of 'em right now."

He sounded slightly disgruntled about this. It was starting to smell good, and all he'd had to eat today was a box of cereal.

"Okay," Cassandra was good at waiting. She settled into a comfortable stance and then stood still to watch and wait.

Chad could be really good at waiting, too, and was ready to, but that didn't stop his stomach from feeling differently, apparently, as it let out a slow, rumbling grumble. Chad coughed slightly, trying to look like that wasn't him, as a little bit of pink showed up under his complexion.

When she waited, Cassandra was silent. But that didn't stop her from smiling widely and reaching out to poke Chad gently in the belly.

"Hey," Chad took the poke. "I can't help it. It smells good..."

She nodded in agreement.

Chad looked over at the water; it was bubbling more, but not quite to that rolling point. He looked over at the sauce; it was boiling, too, but not to the quarter point, or whatever. He grunted, thoughtfully.

"Let's go ahead and add the other stuff. I never knew if it really made that much of a difference, at least with the pasta, if you really wanted 'til it was really boiling..."

"You're the expert," Cassandra grinned at him.

"Let's do it," Chad decided with a grunting nod of conviction. "We'll be rebels."

"Sir yes sir," she saluted seriously. Except for the serious bit.

Chad, although slow and blinking as though confused despite the fact that he wasn't, saluted back. "You in charge of pasta, I'll get the veggies in the sauce?" he offered.

"Okay!" Cassandra stood right where she was.

What was she supposed to do again?

Chad scratched his head a little before putting the vegetables in. He was sort of wondering if this was what he was like. Cassandra was, like, a shorter, paler, infinitely cuter version of him....

"Put it in the pot," he explained. "The noodles."

"Okay!" she repeated and grabbed a huge handful of dry noodles which she dropped into the water. Then she turned to Chad as if to ask 'now what?'
