Ares grinned at his class as they filed in. "I trust you all had a good week, I know I did."

"In light of recent...unexplained happenings, I'm going to shift back todays planned lesson in order to tackle fashions of the future. I want to to extrapolate forwards to what you think will be the height of fashion in, say, twenty years time. Work in groups if you want, or alone if you prefer."

"Oh, and Adama, you know the drill, shirt off."

Tim bounded into the Danger Shop, full of energy after being bedridden for a few days. There were a few mockups of variously tilted roofs, some with bare framing, others with boards, none with shingles.

"Hey! Got a great class today. Roofing! It's the time-honored tradition of putting something over your head so you don't drown when you sleep on a rainy night. Now, for most homeowners, that will be shingles on an angled roof. To prepare for this, you have to be careful, as any roof is dangerous to be on, much less one that has a sloped face. If the roof is too steep, wear a safety harness and attach it to a line, like so."

Tim belted himself into a safety harness and attached a lifeline to the back of it, between the shoulderblades. "Now, if you fall, this lifeline will catch you, like a seatbelt," he said, pulling on the line slowly. "If it goes too fast, it stops!" He jerked the cord and it locked up. "And the harness distributes the weight, so it's not just something clipped to your belt, because that's not safe."

Believe the man, Tim knows not safe.

"So. Anchor the line to something secure, like a chimney, or something on the other side of the roof like a tree or your work truck, and work on the opposite side of the roof. When you're done there, switch the anchor."

He climbed the ladder up to one of the models that was fairly tilted, waiting for shingles. "Now, some of these are just in need of shingles and some are just bare wood." He briefly went over how to prep rafters and timbers for shingling and materials used under shingles and for shingles. And how to remove old shingles and materials for preparing for a new roof.

"So, you start at the bottom of the roof, working your way up row by row. Can everyone see okay?" he said, walking a bit closer to the edge as he grabbed a pack of shingles already on the roof and reached for his hammer.

He fell.

The lifeline caught him, dangling him suspended about a foot off the ground and about a foot below the eaves of the roof. He swung back and forth, the lifeline clipped behind his shoulderblades. "Um. Little help here?" Swing, Tim, Swing.

Still feeling a bit drained from the events of the past week, Anemone opened the library right on time.

Aly glanced over her class, still not sure if they were all ready to be back into the swing of actual classes.  Especially after the additional insanity of the past two days.  But working was better than not working at trying to get things out of one's head, so she continued on with the lesson plan.

"Those of you who've had my classes in the past will probably recognise this lesson if you were paying attention.  It's one of my favourites, and it's not something you learn in one or two hours of study.  So we're going to talk about lying.  Very few people like to lie," she said.  "And there's a difference between liking it and being good at it.  But for a number of professions, it's a necessary skill - both to lie well yourself and to be able to tell when other people are lying.

"As probably all of you know, there are plenty of tools - drugs, magic, technology, mental tricks to detect lies or conceal them, but for today, we're going to focus on simpler methods.  Observation, body language, the logic of how lies are constructed.  You're not always going to have an arsenal of fancy tricks at your disposal and trusting your instincts is the most important."

"So a few of the ways to tell when someone is lying without a fancy trick is to look at their body language.  Someone telling a lie usually tends to have limited physical expression, they keep their gestures and movement restrained in an unconscious attempt to be overlooked.  He or she will avoid eye contact with the person questioning them.  He might also try to place objects - like a book or a coffee cup between him and the person he's lying to.

"Another way to tell is simply by looking at the disconnect between a statement of emotion and the gesture that goes with it.  For instance if I say I love you, then smile a beat later, there's a disconnect there that can give you a clue.  Someone telling the truth - or an accomplished liar would smile saying 'I love you.'"

She grinned.  "All of which is well and good, and excellent to know.  So how do you avoid getting caught when you have a need to lie?  Pay attention to your body language.  Avoid the pitfalls we discussed here and that are on the papers I'm handing out."

"We're going to play a game today that some of you have probably played before.  Two lies and a truth.  Use the techniques we discussed to feel out other members of the class so you can pick out when they're telling the truth."
