When the students came in, they found the usual set up, with a bunch of handouts sitting beside the sign in sheet.

Curses! )

On each desk of the computer lab is a coupon with the following words:

$25.00 good for use on Ebay.com

Once everyone had taken their seat, Abby came up to the front and grinned. "Today you're going to go shopping in what amounts to a great big yard sale. Only with a more crap and less lemonade stands."

"Ebay is a network of people who are offering their crap up to sell by auction. You enter in a bid for the item and then wait to see if you win it. If someone else is interested in the item, there might be a bidding war." Abby sighed. "Which means you'll spend an entire day refreshing and bidding just to lose the red leather dog collar for a measly 25 cents at the last second!"

Abby growled and shook her head. "Lousy btrwmnfan83! I'll get you one of these days!"

"Uh...anyways, you're all going to bid on items. Keep a close eye and make sure you don't get outbid and..." Abby smiled happily. "...you get to keep whatever you buy!"

[ooc: For the purpose of the class, you're going to be bidding on items that close their auction within the hour. Feel free to try and outbid other players and/or leave them comments.]

Week 5 -- October 4: Earth/Terra/Gaia

It's apparently 80s day as Ellie was bopping around to Duran Duran's "Planet Earth."

"Earth is the third planet in the solar system in terms of distance from the Sun," Ellie began the lecture, "and the fifth largest. It is also the largest of its planetary system's terrestrial planets, making it the largest solid body in the solar system, and it is the only planet in the Solar System known to support life. The Earth was formed around 4.57 billion years ago and its largest natural satellite, the Moon, was orbiting it shortly thereafter, around 4.53 billion years ago."

She went on for awhile longer about the evolution and composition of Earth and the Moon, then said, "For the rest of the class, we're going to do something a little more fun. I've got some Super Nintendos and copies of an old game, 'Sim Earth,' for you to play with. Pick a senario and create your planet. Try not to kill all of humanity off.

I'll have the telescope open tonight for anyone who wants to take a look at the Pleiades. See you tonight!"

Feet up on the desk? Check.
Coffee cup? Check.
Appears to be dozing resting his eyes? Check and check.

The now-standard stack of handouts is waiting with the sign-in sheet. Written on the whiteboard are two definitions:

Monotheism - the doctrine or belief that there is only one God.
Polytheism - the doctrine of or belief in more than one god or in many gods.

After the class has filed in, Jesse opens his eyes and smiles at his students. "Mornin'. First things first - two weeks from now, we'll be startin' on 'the people of the book.' Judaism, then Islam, then Christianity. I'm also gonna give y'all a take home mid-term that will be due back the following week. For y'all playin' the home game that means week seven you take the test home, week eight you bring it back to me filled with sh- stuff that's gonna knock my socks off."

Now that the word 'test' has given you dry mouth... )

Josh stopped watching the latest episode of The Daily Show on his laptop when the campaigning class walked into the classroom.

"Today we talk about targeting and research," he said. "As the dancing cartoons on Schoolhouse Rock used to say, 'knowledge is power', and this is never more true than in politics." He raised an eyebrow. "Schoolhouse Rock is awesome, and I refuse to hear anyone who says otherwise." He snapped his finger. "Eric, how many days until the election?"

Targeting and Research )

Josh sat down at his desk and took a sip of coffee. "Okay. For your pros, say you are a 5-term incumbent who is the chairman of, say, an Appropriations subcommittee. You've shuffled an awful lot of money back home. You've been representing your people for a decade and you've made a couple of votes where you've broken party lines to defend what your constituents believe about, oh, let's say the inheritance tax and torturing prisoners. For your cons, you're a Republican linked to a President whose approval ratings are made up of his immediate family."

He smiled. "How would you maximize your assets and minimize your weaknesses?"
[identity profile] professor-lyman.livejournal.com
Josh was grinning at the front of the class as the students arrived. "First of all," he said, "your tests came out very well." He winked at Peter Pevensie. "Even if the only person in the room to correctly answer the question to how the Declaration of Independence begins is British."

He leaned against the desk. "'When in the course of human events' begins the document. Jefferson buried the lead, as journalists would say. 'We hold these truths to be self-evident' wasn't for a couple of paragraphs. I'll hand your results out next week so that anyone who didn't take the test has a chance to now."

He reached for his notes. "Today we talk about two other important documents that were intended to govern the United States: the Articles of Confederation, which totally didn't work, and the Constitution, that did."

And a teal deer made itself comfortable outside Josh's window as he talked forever about the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution )

He sat down. "Today, since you've all read the Constitution like the smart students you are, talk about the balance of powers. Someone give an example of a power that the President has, for instance, or Congress, or the Supreme Court, and someone else show how a different branch can check that power." He smirked. "Think of it as a really, really nerdy game of rock-paper-scissors."

Blair was sitting on a table in the computer lab eating pizza. "I brought food today because I figured we need snacks."

"Did everyone see the Think signs that got put up last week?" Blair bounced. "Does anyone want to report on effects of the signs that they saw?"

Blair pointed to a box of art supplies on a nearby table. "I thought that we'd make some signs tonight. Unless anyone has a specific cause they want us to work on, we can each make something that means something to us."
[identity profile] stargazer-ellie.livejournal.com
"Hi, everyone," Ellie said as people arrived in the astronomy class room. "There might be some thunderstorms tonight, but hopefully we'll get some clear skies to get a good look at some beautiful sights in the night sky.

"First we'll take a look at the Pleiades. The Pleiades (also known as M45 or the Seven Sisters) is an open cluster in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest to the Earth of all open clusters, probably the best known and certainly the most striking to the naked eye. The cluster is about 12 light years in diameter and contains approximately 500 stars in total. It is dominated by young, hot blue stars, which have formed within the last 100 million years, up to 14 of which can be seen with the naked eye depending on local observing conditions. The arrangement of the brightest stars is somewhat similar to Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. It's a mini Big Dipper!

"We'll also take a look at the Ring Nebula, which is located in the contellation Lyra. It is among the most well known and recognizable examples of a planetary nebula, which is what we call the shell of gas left by a star at the end of its life. The nebula is located 2300 light-years from Earth and is illuminated by a central white dwarf.

Any special requests for things to look at?"

As soon as students entered the Danger Shop today, they would find themselves just inside the gates of a city under siege. Burned-out buildings, armed battlements, the works. Most notable, however, was the presence of a giant wooden horse (that for some reason looked more like wicker) in the center of the courtyard; the students' tables were set up under the looming watchful . . . lack of eyes in the horse's head. Yes, it's a huge f**k-off horse, okay?

Janice was leaning against the horse's foreleg, smoking a cigar. 'Welcome to Troy,' she said. )
