"Welcome to Karate, everyone." Tommy says, looking around at the class. "I'm Doctor Oliver, but you can call me Dr. O if you want," he may have rolled his eyes a little.

"This workshop is essentially a survey course of many different styles of karate that have been developed. Each has their benefits and their drawbacks, of course. Hopefully you'll find a style that works for you as a result of this course.

While we're training in here, this gym isn't just a gym. It's a dojo. As such, I expect you all to pay attention to the rules of the dojo:

Seek perfection of character
Be faithful
Endeavour to excel
Respect others
Refrain from violent behaviour

Now, to start things off- I know we have a mix of different skill levels. For those of you who are more advanced, could you provide a short demonstration? For those of you who are just starting out, give this a try." He says, demonstrating the steps slowly.

[ooc: annnnd, i'm likely going to be away from the computer till about 3:30 pacific time. so interaction with tommy will happen after that. don't let that stop you, though!]

[OOC: I'll be AFK at work for most of the day, so interaction will have to be just between you lovely people until later. It'll be okay! Workshop info post will be up ASAP.]

After the students made their way into the lounge at Caritas, the zombie band started playing "The Final Countdown" and GOB took the stage.

"Hi there. My name is GOB Bluth and I'm here to teach you how to be an entertainer. Over the next few weeks, you'll be trying your hand at ventriloquism, dancing, illusion, and today's topic, singing. We're in a karaoke bar. You should have seen this one coming."

Mindful that not everyone might have received her email, Veronica had hung some *handwavy* signs around the camp area directing photography students to the lecture hall where they were holding their first workshop.

As students entered, she handed out them a syllabus and a handout titled "Photography Basics" and directed them to the coffee and pastries courtesy of J,GOB.

Once everyone had arrived and was seated, she introduced herself.

"Good morning. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Veronica Mars. Please call me Veronica." There may have been a slight glare in Cam's direction at those words. "I just graduated from Fandom High and I've been interested in photography for as long as I can remember. Today is going to be an easy day. I want you to introduce yourselves to me and each other and I want you all to tell me why you signed up for this workshop." Another glare in Cam's direction and also one for Bel.

"If you brought a camera, I'd like to see it and approve it. If you need a camera, we'll get you set up with one. If you didn't get my email, I'd like to re-iterate that after this week, we will be developing photos in each workshop session, so please wear clothes that you don't mind having splashed with chemicals. After this week, we'll be meeting in the Journalism classroom so we can use the dark room. Last class will be back here and you're welcome to invite friends to that one."

She smiled at the group. "Let's start the introductions."

Abby smiled nervously as students filed into the computer lab, checking a stack of notecards. "Hey, I'm Professor Abby and this is the first workshop on computers." She paused and gulped a little nervously, starting to speak faster. "This class is going to help you get to know computers and have fun with them. If you're already a geek then I'll teach you a few tricks that I've learned over the years. Nothing really illegal or anything, but some really cool things. Plus if there's anything specific that you want to learn this summer, just let me know."

"But first I need to get to know you and find out what you know. So if everyone could go around and tell me your name, your grade and what experience you have with computers, that would rock!"

Placing a box on a desk, Abby drew out a handful of keychain-sized toys. "These are your first assignment. They're virtual pets and it's a pretty cool piece of computer technology. You enter data like food, playtime and attention and the computer updates your pets life, making it grow or die based on your actions. It will give you a chance to dip your toe in the water of technology for those of you who are new to things. For those who know what to do, I'm pretty sure you can find a way to hook two pets up and make them fight." Abby grinned and dumped the box out.

"I bought these here, so it's sort of a weird selection. Looks like we've got lizard, monkey, hippo, gremlin and floating head." Abby shrugged. "Yeah, I'm not really sure about that last one."

Week 1 - Introduction to Observational Astronomy; the Milky Way; the Big and Little Dippers, Cassiopeia

Star maps: East | West | North | South | Overhead

Ellie waited for the students at the main campfire as her email had said. When everyone was there, she led them down to the beach for a unobstructed view of the sky. There were a few wispy clouds, but for the most part the skies were clear. Ellie handed out copies of starmaps and extra binoculars for those who needed them, then began her lecture.

"Welcome to Observational Astronomy! I'm Dr. Ellie Arroway, but please, call me Ellie, and I'll be teaching you about the wonderful things you can find in the night sky. As you will soon learn I love astronomy and sometimes tend to ramble when I teach, so please feel free to interrupt with questions at any time, or let me know if you have trouble finding anything I'm pointing out.

''If you look -- really look -- at the stars, you'll see they aren't just points of white light. )

"Any questions?"

Though she hadn't been planning on opening the library this week, when Rory got a voicemail about Tyler working in the library, she made an exception.

She unlocked the doors and mentally started going through what they'd told her when they had trained her six months ago.

[Assume Rory's training Tyler when no one else is in the library, but it's otherwise open if you have literary needs.]

Tyler? Pedaling about as fast as the exercise bike will go. It's training, yo.

And every few minutes, he looks to see if anyone is about to join him.

He's not sure how he wants the sparring match to turn out, although not beating English Peter into a coma would be a good step for him.

[OOC: Open to all. Also, this should be in [livejournal.com profile] fandomhighdorms, but I messed up. My apologies.]

[OCD-ness achieved. Have at!

Also, may or may not be able to post on Wednesday night every week. I will, however, get the 'shops up as quickly as possible.]
