Karate, Gym, May 24, Wednesday Morning

"Welcome to Karate, everyone." Tommy says, looking around at the class. "I'm Doctor Oliver, but you can call me Dr. O if you want," he may have rolled his eyes a little.

"This workshop is essentially a survey course of many different styles of karate that have been developed. Each has their benefits and their drawbacks, of course. Hopefully you'll find a style that works for you as a result of this course.

While we're training in here, this gym isn't just a gym. It's a dojo. As such, I expect you all to pay attention to the rules of the dojo:

Seek perfection of character
Be faithful
Endeavour to excel
Respect others
Refrain from violent behaviour

Now, to start things off- I know we have a mix of different skill levels. For those of you who are more advanced, could you provide a short demonstration? For those of you who are just starting out, give this a try." He says, demonstrating the steps slowly.

[ooc: annnnd, i'm likely going to be away from the computer till about 3:30 pacific time. so interaction with tommy will happen after that. don't let that stop you, though!]

After a brief moment of considersation, sakurazaki decides to go through her forms for her Shinmei style, starting out, of course, with a deep, reverant bow for Dr. Oliver. They are quite obviously swordsman forms, mingled with tai chi, but they are what she knows best. In all honesty, she has never pursued karate or many other martial arts, but she hopes her sword training will count for something. But she can't be sure, so she demonstrates them, leaving the judgement of her placement and continued instruction to her sensei.

Lyta rose from her place on the floor, bowing to Dr. Oliver as she remembered from the Academy, then took position. She hesitated. After a long moment, she bowed again, requesting permission, then provided the name of the kata very quietly. She then attempted the Juni No Kata (http://www.shitokai.com/juninokata.php) she learned before switching over to pilates. Her first block and pivot were a little slow, as she had a bit of trouble remembering. As she continued, however, her confidence grew; her front stance was pretty good and her concentration, while a little shaky at first, was absolute by the time she finishes.

Blushing a bit, she bowed again, thanking Dr. Oliver, then backed to resume her seat.

Alanna went through a few kicks and punches. They were nowhere close to Karate kicks, but did have pretty good accuracy and strength behind them.

The fighting Tyler had done was more about trying to bash the other guy's face in than about adhering to a form. He went through the series quickly, sloppily and more than a little violently.

Peter had no trouble duplicating the forms Dr. Oliver demonstrated even if it was patently obvious that his hand to hand training came more from the boxing direction than the martial arts direction.

Isabel tried to repeat the form they'd been shown. Her movements were reasonably accurate thanks to what Aeryn had shown her but it's obvious she's new at this.

Z demonstrated a couple of la la la handwavey defying gravity moves that seemed to be of a mixed style.

Dean was much more comfortable in a sparring situation, where it was more about beating your opponent and less about how good your form was and it probably showed. He always felt kinda silly when punching and kicking at thin air.

But while his form was lacking at times, he did have the basics down and that showed as well.

Pip wrapped his braid around his neck and rotated his shoulder a few times as he tried to decide what to show.

He decided to start off with a Tae Kwon Do kata, gracefully flowed into a demonstration of Krav Maga techniques (Millitary/police moves included, not just the civillian moves) before finally switching to a demonstration of savate techniques.

He bowed a little, grinning impetuously, and returned to his seat.

Ranma doesn't want to show off or preform infront of everyone like this but, seeing as he has no real choice and doesn't want to get stuck as a beginner he poises himself for a minute before going through a powerful and concentrated kicking form. It was a string of moves without pauses between other than to flip backwards and to hop forwards at times. He wasn't overall very happy with what he preformed but the way he fights is very much based on reaction to his oppenents actions.

Alphonse swiftly and easily went through several moves, which could be seen as very martial arts-esque. It was mostly hand-to-hand combat moves, consisting of punches and kicks, and it someone had been fighting back a bunch of flipping. It should be obvious that he's had a lot of experience when it came to sparring.

John forces his way through the katas, improvising a little with some moves from krav maga and others. It's obvious that his style is mixed, and seems more apt to disable opponents or brawling than strict form.

While Alanna was going through her demonstration, Faithful trotted up to Dr. Oliver. "I'm already Faithful!" He cheerfully told the teacher.

Peter continued to run through the forms Dr. Oliver had demonstrated though he was starting to turn them into modified sword forms.

Pip hummed a little as he went through a few stretches. He seemed to be in a particularly good mood today. He did keep scratching around his eyepatch, though. Might be time to wash it. Or even get a new one.

Isabel worked on the forms they'd been shown. Occasionally she'd look at the members of Stickbug in the class and shake her head sadly.

Z kept casting Dr. Smart Glasses sidelong looks in what could only be described as a fangirlish manner. "Can I have your autograph?"

Pip approached Dr. Oliver after his demonstration. "Out of curiosity, Dr. Oliver, what styles of karate will we be studying? And will we just be studying asian martial arts?"
