Karate, Gym, May 24, Wednesday Morning

"Welcome to Karate, everyone." Tommy says, looking around at the class. "I'm Doctor Oliver, but you can call me Dr. O if you want," he may have rolled his eyes a little.

"This workshop is essentially a survey course of many different styles of karate that have been developed. Each has their benefits and their drawbacks, of course. Hopefully you'll find a style that works for you as a result of this course.

While we're training in here, this gym isn't just a gym. It's a dojo. As such, I expect you all to pay attention to the rules of the dojo:

Seek perfection of character
Be faithful
Endeavour to excel
Respect others
Refrain from violent behaviour

Now, to start things off- I know we have a mix of different skill levels. For those of you who are more advanced, could you provide a short demonstration? For those of you who are just starting out, give this a try." He says, demonstrating the steps slowly.

[ooc: annnnd, i'm likely going to be away from the computer till about 3:30 pacific time. so interaction with tommy will happen after that. don't let that stop you, though!]

While Alanna was going through her demonstration, Faithful trotted up to Dr. Oliver. "I'm already Faithful!" He cheerfully told the teacher.

Lyta closed her eyes and shook her head at the cat. It seemed bad puns didn't stop with just humans.

Peter continued to run through the forms Dr. Oliver had demonstrated though he was starting to turn them into modified sword forms.

"So Peter," Dean said, continuing his own fight with an imaginary opponent, "heard you'd taken up singing and duck wrangling."

Peter may have flushed slightly, but he grinned at Dean. "It's not summer camp without a prank war, hmm?"

"Seven girls and one guy right next door to us. How could anyone resist?"

"Ducks? Not the best way of impressing the ladies," Dean advised. "I don't know about Zack. There may be some weird duck tests he likes to run."

"Impress? No, not in that cabin," Peter paused to tally up his cabinmates in his head. "Maybe some of the others. I'm sure they'll get their own back and we'll be off to the start of a very interesting summer."

Pip hummed a little as he went through a few stretches. He seemed to be in a particularly good mood today. He did keep scratching around his eyepatch, though. Might be time to wash it. Or even get a new one.

Peter nodded at Pip after Pip's demonstration. "So you're going to be helping teach this class, right? You certainly don't need to take it."

Pip grinned. "Well, that's always an option. Though I'm always up for learning styles I don't know. You think Dr. Oliver needs a TA?"

"Couldn't hurt to ask," Peter replied. "Where'd you learn all that?"

Pip shurgged. "Maybe I'll mention it after class. As for your question, it depends on which part. I learned the middle part from a former member of the Israeli defense force, for example."

Peter had read far enough into the history of the past 66 years to realise that Israel was a country now so that didn't completely confuse him. "Interesting. Do you work with weapons as well?"

Pip nodded. "Knives are a particular speciality, but I've worked with batons, tonfa and even a quarter staff or two. Oh, and guns."

Isabel worked on the forms they'd been shown. Occasionally she'd look at the members of Stickbug in the class and shake her head sadly.

Peter bowed to Isabel when he saw her. And hoped she couldn't kill him with her mind.

Isabel grinned. "Very nice. But not nearly enough to make up for having to clean duck droppings off of my bed."

Peter might have looked faintly embarrassed. "My apologies, Lady. But did you enjoy the song?"

"Let's just say it was one hell of a wake-up call and leave it at that," she laughed. "Who picked that particular song?" So I can make sure to turn their clothes puce she thought to herself.

"It seemed to be a group decision," Peter responded with a grin. Nope, not going to leave any fellow Stickbug out on a limb for that one.
