Karate, Gym, May 24, Wednesday Morning

"Welcome to Karate, everyone." Tommy says, looking around at the class. "I'm Doctor Oliver, but you can call me Dr. O if you want," he may have rolled his eyes a little.

"This workshop is essentially a survey course of many different styles of karate that have been developed. Each has their benefits and their drawbacks, of course. Hopefully you'll find a style that works for you as a result of this course.

While we're training in here, this gym isn't just a gym. It's a dojo. As such, I expect you all to pay attention to the rules of the dojo:

Seek perfection of character
Be faithful
Endeavour to excel
Respect others
Refrain from violent behaviour

Now, to start things off- I know we have a mix of different skill levels. For those of you who are more advanced, could you provide a short demonstration? For those of you who are just starting out, give this a try." He says, demonstrating the steps slowly.

[ooc: annnnd, i'm likely going to be away from the computer till about 3:30 pacific time. so interaction with tommy will happen after that. don't let that stop you, though!]

"All of our names and just about every other detail of the incident. It's like someone was standing next to us watching everything. Rather disturbing that."

"Very," Tyler said, shuddering. "Makes you wonder what else they're watching."

He leaned over to stretch out a hamstring. "Are we on to spar tonight?"

"It does. I wonder how much trouble that's going to cause before the summer is out."

"We are. Unarmed or armed?" Peter stepped out of the form he was practicing with a look of disgust. "And one day I'll learn my right from my left," he muttered under his breath.

"Unarmed," Tyler said instantly. "I'm not so good with weapons in hand-to-hand."

Satisfied withhis stretching, he began to jog in place, trying to loosen his muscles. "Think we'll get to breaking bricks by the end of this class?"

"As opposed to using weapons outside of combat?" Peter asked with a grin. "Unarmed works for me."

Peter began a different form, this one very definitely for swordwork. "Breaking bricks? Like by throwing them against a wall?"

Tyler shook his head, deciding not to get into his use of weapons outside combat. "Martial arts movies. They always show people breaking bricks with the side of their hand. I tried it once. My hand was purple for a week."

"I can see why it would be. I wonder what's to be gained from the technique." Peter shrugged. He still wasn't fully convinced that there was much point in fighting without weapons anyway. Except for here where they weren't trusted with them.

Tyler looked thoughtful. "I think it's about mental toughness. Doing the impossible can be a rush, you know?"

Peter considered Tyler's point for a minute, "I suppose you're right. Though I'd much prefer my doing of the impossible to be something actually useful to others."
