Library [05/24]

Though she hadn't been planning on opening the library this week, when Rory got a voicemail about Tyler working in the library, she made an exception.

She unlocked the doors and mentally started going through what they'd told her when they had trained her six months ago.

[Assume Rory's training Tyler when no one else is in the library, but it's otherwise open if you have literary needs.]

Tyler showed up armed with coffee.

It seemed like it might come in handy.

He waved with one hand as he offered Rory a cup with the other. "Hi. Wanted to show you I keep my promises."

Rory raised a brow, taking the cup. "Good. I might forgive you, even though my dog's mad at me for taking away his tiny duck friend." She frowned. "Are you seriously working in the library, though? You don't exactly seem the, um, type."

Tyler pouted. "I can read and everything."

More seriously, he added, "It was Principal Washburn's idea. Apparently if you almost blow yourself up, they put you in with the books."

"How are you feeling, by the way?" Rory asked, concerned as she moved behind the desk.

"Better," Tyler said, with a genuine smile. "The witch -- self-description, by the way -- at the clinic cleared me yesterday to go back to normal activities. Thanks for asking."

As he spoke, his eyes roved the library restlessly.

"Good," Rory nodded. "Okay. So, okay, library work is actually pretty easy." She waved him over to join her behind the desk. "We have the computer, which is love, and the card catalog, which is less so but works just as well."

Tyler stared at the card catalogue. "That thing looks like it eats kids," he said. "How does the computer work?"

Rory tapped a few keys, and went through the basic computer procedures which I'm going to handwave as we've never established them. "Oh," she said, going very serious, "one thing. Do not ever, ever, ever sign any contract presented to you out of nowhere. My friend did that and she ended up kind of possessed by the library."

The computer stuff was easy enough to follow, and Tyler just stared at her on the contract. "You're kidding."

"Wish I was," Rory sighed. "It'd tell her things, which was useful, but it drove her nuts and gave her a headache."

"Huh," Tyler said. It sounded like he might not be the only one on campus with an imaginary friend. "So did it appear to her as a person, or how did that work?"

He shook his head. "Anyhow. I won't sign anything."

"You'll have to ask her. I think it mostly just kind of was instinctual," she said, shrugging. "Um, let's see...other random stuff. I think we'll take you through SC later, but for now, know that Special Collections requires a note for kids to go back there because it's way dangerous. Oh, and," she rolled her eyes, "if you ever see anything in the records about asking people if they're a Chosen One, ignore it."

Tyler nodded. "Special collections is not to be messed with," he said. "Got it."

Privately, he decided to explore it sometime. Once he'd figured out where they kept the Anarchist's Cookbook, anyhow.

He ran a hand through his hair and snorted a little at the "chosen one" thing. "Are there a few too many people who want to be regarded as special and unique snowflakes?"

"Some people really are," Rory said. "I mean, to be fair. But last year one of the aides had a whole thing where people couldn't put that on their applications, and I really don't get that. And she's not an aide anymore, so I'm scrapping that rule."

Tyler shrugged, and decided to save the "decaying organic matter" speech for later. He also wondered what was with the other aide.

"That's bizarre," he said. "So if anybody needs to run around saying they're a chosen one, they can do it on the application?"

When not at class, Hermione's more or less just wandering, perusing the stacks, occasionally picking up a book to see whether it looks any good.

"Hey, Hermione," Rory called, waving at her. "Are you looking for something in particular, or just browsing?"

"Just browsing for now," Hermione says. "I saw it was open and had to familiarize myself with what you have here."

"Understandable," Rory grinned. "Let me know if you need help with anything, okay?"

"Thank you," Hermione smiles, and goes back to looking. She loves this place.

Silent Bob walked into the library.

Yes, he can read. No, he didn't get lost. He looked around for someone who could help him, spotted Rory, and walked over, waving a bit.

Rory waved. "Hey. Can I help you find something?"

Prepared for such an eventuality, Silent Bob handed her a note.

I am teaching a workshop on documentaries and was hoping the class could have use of the library on the morning of Tuesday, June 6 for research purposes.

He beamed at her, waiting for a reply.

Rory read the note and nodded. "That sounds fine, actually. One of the aides or the librarian himself should be around if you guys need help."

Bob grinned and gave her a thumbs up. Excellent. He was almost starting to like this teaching stuff.
