Library [05/24]

Though she hadn't been planning on opening the library this week, when Rory got a voicemail about Tyler working in the library, she made an exception.

She unlocked the doors and mentally started going through what they'd told her when they had trained her six months ago.

[Assume Rory's training Tyler when no one else is in the library, but it's otherwise open if you have literary needs.]

Rory tapped a few keys, and went through the basic computer procedures which I'm going to handwave as we've never established them. "Oh," she said, going very serious, "one thing. Do not ever, ever, ever sign any contract presented to you out of nowhere. My friend did that and she ended up kind of possessed by the library."

The computer stuff was easy enough to follow, and Tyler just stared at her on the contract. "You're kidding."

"Wish I was," Rory sighed. "It'd tell her things, which was useful, but it drove her nuts and gave her a headache."

"Huh," Tyler said. It sounded like he might not be the only one on campus with an imaginary friend. "So did it appear to her as a person, or how did that work?"

He shook his head. "Anyhow. I won't sign anything."

"You'll have to ask her. I think it mostly just kind of was instinctual," she said, shrugging. "Um, let's see...other random stuff. I think we'll take you through SC later, but for now, know that Special Collections requires a note for kids to go back there because it's way dangerous. Oh, and," she rolled her eyes, "if you ever see anything in the records about asking people if they're a Chosen One, ignore it."

Tyler nodded. "Special collections is not to be messed with," he said. "Got it."

Privately, he decided to explore it sometime. Once he'd figured out where they kept the Anarchist's Cookbook, anyhow.

He ran a hand through his hair and snorted a little at the "chosen one" thing. "Are there a few too many people who want to be regarded as special and unique snowflakes?"

"Some people really are," Rory said. "I mean, to be fair. But last year one of the aides had a whole thing where people couldn't put that on their applications, and I really don't get that. And she's not an aide anymore, so I'm scrapping that rule."

Tyler shrugged, and decided to save the "decaying organic matter" speech for later. He also wondered what was with the other aide.

"That's bizarre," he said. "So if anybody needs to run around saying they're a chosen one, they can do it on the application?"

"If they want. We used to tell them not to, but I'm saying we should ignore that," Rory said decisively. She rooted around in a drawer and held up a sheet of paper. "Here's a map of everything in the library. Should be pretty easy to direct people. The card applications are right there, and most shifts usually consist of drinking coffee and making sure kids don't burn the place down."

Tyler looked at the map, tracing the library's contents with his finger. "I think I get it," he said. "Which day do you want me here? I have workshops Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and my mun teaches Tuesday."

"How's Monday?" Rory asked. "I was going to open it kind of on a limited schedule - Mondays and Wednesdays. Oh, and the librarian might be around periodically. He's blue and speaks German and has a tail."

"Mondays are good," Tyler confirmed. "Should I just open when the workshops start?"

He ignored the information about the librarian. At this point, the weird thing would have been if the librarian was a perfectly normal former teacher from Des Moines.

"Yeah, that makes sense," Rory said considering. "And you don't have to stay the whole day. Just through handwavey time in the afternoon, really."

"I can do that," Tyler agreed. "What else do I need to know. IS anyone banned from the library, or anything like that?"

"Not that I know of," Rory said thoughtfully. "People need cards to check stuff out, obviously. People need to be quiet. It's usually a good idea to ask what they're looking for, that kind of thing."

"I can be very helpful and reassuring to all patrons," Tyler said. "And I won't blow up the library."

He looked at Rory intently. "You're being really decent. I was worried, because of the cabin war thing."

"You brought coffee. This is a library. And you brought coffee," she replied, arching a brow. "I don't want to upset the books. And also you brought coffee. But the war's still on, just in case you were curious."

"Just asking," Tyler said, a tiny smile playing around his lips. "So, you ... like coffee?"

"Little bit," she said seriously. "This? Third cup today."

"I so get that," Tyler said, then lowered his voice. "I died a little when I realized there was no Starbucks on the island. Perk is good, but .... not the same."

"Actually, if you're not looking for frilly stuff, my stepdad makes really good coffee," she offered. "Luke's, in town. Really good pancakes, too."

"I may need to move in there," Tyler said seriously. "So did you grow up in Fandom?"

She shook her head. "Little bitty town in Connecticut that's kind of near Hartford," she supplied. "Parents moved here last year when Mom started teaching here and stuff. What about you? Where are you from?"

"Wilmington, Delaware," Tyler supplied, looking slightly bemused. "Another tiny state."

"I was just up in Delaware a couple months ago," Rory said. "Whereabouts is Wilmington?"
