Fever...OF DEATH

What’s hopping and shaking, all you student-mannered students? Me, that’s who! No, it isn’t just an expression or non-sequitur. I had an interesting drink over the weekend, and it kicks a bit going down. Seeing as how I can’t sit down for another week, I thought this would be a rather keen time to take a gander at the functionality of fabrics.

Now, I don’t know much- right, that’s a lie. I know much, and among the things I know are these:

It takes moves to dance. It takes moves to ninja (I can verb anything I want, I’m president of the galaxy).

Ergo, this week’s theme is Disco Ninja. Fair enough, as we gave the pirates their time to shine.

A Disco Ninja is an elusive creature. They are graceful, yet deadly. They sneak silently about in goldfish platforms, an art truly lost on the modern warrior. They quietly rock out to ABBA whilst stealthfully improving upon John Travolta’s moves from Saturday Night Fever. If Disco Ninjas had a movie, it would be entitled Saturday Night Fever of Death. This movie’s greatness would be eclipsed only by its eventual and inevitable sequel Breakin’ 2: Ninja Bugaloo. I hope you understand that by this point, the “of death” is implied.

To be a Disco Ninja, one must place high value on mobility, while still paying attention to style. This week, you all have the extreme honor of designing these illustrious ensembles. The top two costumes will be worn by yours truly and a surprise guest in a good old-fashioned dance off!

EDIT: Also, with the end of term in a few days, this is going to be the final project you have to turn in for me. Consider the dance-off, which is mandatory attendance, to serve as both a final exam and a reward for not messing up so absolutely during the term. Got that?

Handouts await at the table inside the gym. They contain the rules for basketball.

Mac rubs his hands together. "Okay. Today, basketball. Remember those rules--both so the other team doesn't wipe the floor with you, and because there will be a test."

It's Movie Friday. Snacks are laid out, and the movie is set. On the board is written:

Today we watch The Maltese Falcon. Pay attention to misleading body language. Who uses it and to what end? E. is in charge...I have to run study hall. I expect a short response, not to exceed 2 pages, on Monday. CJC

She opens study hall and has crayons, tape, glitter glue, and an assortment of paper if you want to do something besides study or chatter. She is busy coloring pictures of flowers and rainbows and sunshine and ice cream...and any other happy thing she can think of.

Help youself...draw the nice teacher a picture or two.

"Your study question today is two-fold! One! Tell me how awesome my song was. Two! Describe what you'd do with the big LDV if you could hang out with him."

Hello, everyone. Feel free to help yourselves to the coffee and don't forget to sign the roll sheet.

Today, we will be having both a lecture and a lab.

Thermodynamics is the field of physics that studies the properties of systems that have a temperature and involve the flow of energy from one place to another. Find out about the laws of thermodynamics, entropy, Maxwell's Demon and more.

There is no sign of Spider today. There's a small sign tacked to his desk reading: "Due to class projects, today's class has been cancelled. If you need to make any further arrangements with the Professor, please send him a voicemail and he'll get right back to you. Please sign here for attendance credit."

"Today we will learn about Sustainable Living, which every person must learn about in order to work together with Mother Nature. This will be the first lesson in many to come about sustainablity."

Handout )

Please complete the following activities and turn them in for a grade.

"Welcome back class, sorry for my previous absence," Camulus drawls when everyone (all three - hopefully) is assembled. "Right onto the lesson. The Pillowtalk. An activity I'm fairly sure you're all familiar with. So. The pillowtalk begins with introducing the characters of Ailill and Medb, rulers of Connacht. What's important to note is that Medb is the only queen that rules with any sort of authority in any Celtic tale, and through the Tain you'll see that she actually wields quite a bit of power. However, Celtic lore is about as kind to women as Arthurian lore is. Medb comes to be a very corrupt figure, the reason for Connacht's downfall. And you'll see that it is her pride that starts the events of the Tain.

"So our story begins in a very Celtic way - with a pissing contest. Only it isn't between two warriors, it's between Ailill and Medb. Which continues to the end of 'The Occasion of the Tain' with Maeve declaring war - or a cattle raid - on Dare mac Fiachna to possess the Brown Bull of Cuilagne."

Camulus pauses for a moment. "Another of the pre-stories that we didn't cover deals with the conception of the two bulls, the Brown Bull and the White Bull. We've already dealt with humans changing form and thus living for a very long time in one animal shape or another. And we've also dealt with a woman drinking an enchanted fly or insect of some sort and that fly being born as a child. The story of the bulls is both. Two friends began life as pig-keepers and went through various incarnations in which they fought with each other, until finally they were imbibed by two heifers and reborn as these bulls. So they already know each other."

He waves a hand. "I want 'The Rising of the Men of Connacht' and 'The Foretelling' read for next class. And at the end of the Tain, I want story summaries handed in. They don't have to be long - some sections only require a sentence or two - but I want them complete. Any questions about the Tain so far?"

Daniel smiled at the class. "Good morning," he said. "It's Friday, so I'm going to take it easy on you.

"All I'm asking:  What is mutation, and how does it affect population genetics?

Anyone?

Also, please hand in your homework from Wednesday in this tray on my desk. There's no homework tonight. Have a good weekend."

Tara grins broadly at the students as they enter, her good mood almost super-human.

"Hey. Only three weeks until the end of term, huh? I don't know about you, but that kind of snuck up on me! So today we've got a pretty heavy discussion topic, and I want you to remember that this is just a class. Emo Closet is there if you need it, although I hope we call all be gentle enough with one another that it won't be necessary, okay?

"Because today, folks, we're going to be talking about rape - and all I'm going to ask you folks to do is define it."

Keith is bouncing in the front of the classroom.

Weathering is the first stage in the denudation of the landscape. It is the break up of rock material on the spot. Either the physical disintegration of rock or the decomposition of minerals by atmospheric gases and water.

Exams are coming up soon. For revision you may find it helpful to go over this as homework.

Keith looks slightly puzzled, he's sure there used to be more students around.

Tara lingers after class, ready to talk to any students who need to process the class discussion further... or anything else, really. Her joy has abated under the weight of the serious topic, leaving a deep peace and contentment visible in every gesture.
