To his Classics students, Dream delivers a lecture on Koine Greek. After he is done, he puts forward a question for discussion: What were the benefits of Koine as an international language? Are international languages still valuable?

For his Languages of Asia students, he passes out calligraphy paper, pens, and a primer on Chinese writing. Work on understanding why Chinese is written as it is written, and on copying the characters showin in the handout. Next week, you will move into writing with understanding.

Again, there are no classes on Friday. I will see you all on Monday.

“Good morning, class.” Spider’s cigarettes were back and it looked as though he were suffering from a monumental hangover. “Yesterday, Professor Dream attended our class and shared an event with us. Each student wrote down their impression. Today’s exercise is for each of you to examine the various impressions and attempt to assemble the most cohesive whole that you can from the available witness pool.”

The cat, still round and looking self-satisfied, leaped onto the desk and sprawled out, attempting to snag Spider’s cigarettes. He fished one out and lit it for her. “It is the height of foolishness to choose a single witness to any shared event. It limits you to their perspective. Live footage is always best, because it allows you to see what went on and make your own observations, but whenever there’s a large pool of witnesses available, it always pays to get as much information as you possibly can – particularly when you couldn’t be there to witness it yourself.”

Tapping two fingers on the stack of printouts on the edge of his desk, he ended with, “Here are copies of what everyone saw, remembered and reported. Sift through, draw your own conclusions, and write me as concise a report as you can. Those of you who were present can add your own, personal observations if you like, but draw on as many of the others as you can in order to corroborate your account.”

Hello, everyone. Beatings Presentations will continue until morale improves. Jack and Cally's was quite good, and while I don't expect you to have building blocks on hand, I'm certain that the rest of you can come up with something equally brilliant.

[livejournal.com profile] carter_i_am, you're excused from this assignment, but could you see me after class to talk about your project?

Death and Dying
Please have a seat. I'd like you to share the piece of media you have brought in, and if you'd like, why you chose it. I have selected Tolstoy's A Confession.

Homework: Choose a death by suicide from Shakespeare's work, and write a short reaction to it.

Sociology of Deviance
First of all, I'd like to apologize for my absence last week. I hope you studied your vocabulary, there will be no quiz, but it will be on your upcoming midterm exam. The study guide will be provided next week.

In class today, I would like you to find a study partner for the exam. As you know, this class is pass/fail, but you will be receiving letter grades so that I have proper documentation of your coursework.

Discussion: A quick lecture on sexuality and deviance [skim the very top section if interested] Constructionists believe Sexual meaning does not exist intrinsically or inherently in a given act. Do you believe that is true?

Homework: Please read Synergies in Deviance: Revisiting the Positive Deviance Debate by Brad West and come to class with an example of something that you believe is an example of positive deviance.

Slim odds: What do you do when there is a lot of them and very few of you.

I think we should split you up into small groups for discussion today. We could even turn this into a debate it you feel up to it.

On the stage, arrayed on a makeshift table constructed from an ancient flat and a pair of sawhorses, there are a variety of foods: carafes of coffee, cocoa and mulled cider, bowls of crisp local apples, platters of cookies, brownies and rice crispy treats, and, scattered among them, an assortment of candies in wrappers - chocolates and toffees and gummies and lollipops. Scooter sits in a bright orange bar-stool height director's chair, flipping through a catalog, waiting for people to show up.

Daniel's in a good mood, doodling on a notebook at the front of the class. He is not writing "I love Janet" or "Dr Daniel and Dr Janet Jackson". Really

"Today, our subject should hopefully be less frightening to most of you," he grins. "Marriage.

Marriage is a socially approved union of a man and woman regulating their sexual and economic rights and obligations

It's a sexual union:
- marriage socially legitimates sexual relations
- it regulates sexual behaviour and reproduction

and has economic obligations: marriage structures the sexual division of labour.

There are three types of marriage union.

MONOGAMY
This is marriage to one spouse at a time, and is the most common in Western civilization. Extramarital affairs or serial monogamy may occur, but these tend not to be sanctioned.

POLYGYNY
When it's the marriage of one man to two or more women. 70 percent of the world's population practice it; why do you think that is? Anyone?

It's a preferred type of marriage, although the majority of men in polygynous societies have only one wife.

Now, why does it happen? The economic status of women is high in polygynous societies, they are assets to domestic production unit. The sex ratio in polygynous societies; there are fewer marriageable men because men commonly marry later than women, and also because there may be of higher mortality among men, for example, due to warfare.

What are the advantages of polygyny? It's a symbol of prestige for men & their families, and multiple affinal connections are economic & political assets.

However, thee is competition and/or jealousy among wives. Women may have their own separate homes, and the rights and obligations of co-wives are clearly defined. A form hierarchy may exist among co-wives (senior v. junior). Some have found that sororal polygyny, which is the marriage of sisters, may reduce problems.

POLYANDRY
This is the marriage of one women to two or more men. It is the least common form of marriage, and women usually marry group of brothers - even the ones not yet born. Polyandry may serve to keep assets, for example, land, within the family, by not having to split the land further into smaller plots.

Okay, homework for this class. Chose a culture, and write about the type of marriage it involves. Not your own, however. The idea of this class is that we're looking at different cultures."

Charlie is surrounded by a stack of old books, crumpled pieces of paper, and pencils. He's writing eagerly on one of the blackboards. The heading he's written is: Probability Calculation: Migrasjon.

He waits until everybody in a group has arrived. "Joan Girardi and Kimberly Shaw are no longer enrolled in this class and have possibly been eaten. This means that there's an open place in Intermediate, if you know of anyone who might wish to join us.

This is the attendance I have counted thus far, please let me know if I have made any mistakes." He gives them all a copy of their attendance record, as well as todays problems.

Egyptian Archaeology

At the front of the classroom, Daniel sitting with his notebook, scribbling. He's still not writing about Janet, and waxing lyrical about her beauty. And he's not added "Dr Janet Fraiser-Jackson" or "Doctor Daniel Fraiser??" No. Not at all. Nothing to see here. Move along

"Okay, well done on your work with the unification. Now, today we're talking about a different sort of unification," he says, pausing and looking pleased with himself. "Marriage in Ancient Egypt.

"Once a young man was well into adolescence, it was appropriate for him to seek a partner and begin his own family. Females were probably thought to be ready for marriage after their first menses. The marrying age of males was probably a little older, perhaps 16 to 20 years of age, because they had to become established and be able to support a family.

Virginity was not a necessity for marriage; indeed, premarital sex, or any sex between unmarried people, was socially acceptable. Once married, however, couples were expected to be sexually faithful to each other. Egyptians (except the king) were, in theory, monogamous, and many records indicate that couples expressed true affection for each other. They were highly sensual people, and a major theme of their religion was fertility and procreation. This sensuality is reflected by two New Kingdom love poems: "Your hand is in my hand, my body trembles with joy, my heart is exalted because we walk together," and "She is more beautiful than any other girl, she is like a star rising . . . with beautiful eyes for looking and sweet lips for kissing"." He does not pause and make a note in his notebook about it

Marriage was purely a social arrangement that regulated property. Neither religious nor state doctrines entered into the marriage and, unlike other documents that related to economic matters (such as the so-called "marriage contracts"), marriages themselves were not registered. Apparently once a couple started living together, they were acknowledged to be married. As related in the story of Setne, "I was taken as a wife to the house of Naneferkaptah [that night, and pharaoh] sent me a present of silver and gold . . . He [as in her husband] slept with me that night and found me pleasing. He slept with me again and again and we loved each other"

The ancient Egyptian terms for marriage (meni, "to moor [a boat]," and grg pr, "to found a house") convey the sense that the arrangement was about property. Texts indicate that the groom often gave the bride's family a gift, and he also gave his wife presents. Legal texts indicate that each spouse maintained control of the property that they brought to the marriage, while other property acquired during the union was jointly held. Ideally the new couple lived in their own house, but if that was impossible they would live with one of their parents. Considering the lack of effective contraceptives and the Egyptian's traditional desire to have a large family, most women probably became pregnant shortly after marriage.

You're homework tonight is:
Compare the legal weight of marriage among the ancient Egyptians with marriage practice in other cultures. How similar is this ancient concept and construct to contemporary Western notions of marriage?

Thank you, you've been a great audience!"
