doesdoctorstuff: Navaan from Trudy Cooper's Oglaf (Tadaaa!)

Some time last week, messages had handwavily gone out to the class telling them to send in their completed manuscripts by Sunday and those who didn't would fail the class horribly and also get syphilis.

Walking into the classroom on Monday, the reason for such a dire message became obvious. On Navaan's desk were small stacks of books - one stack for each student who had sent something in. Turned out that Gorham Print had done a bunch of fast printing and each student now had five copies of their own manuscript, printed and bound for them.

"Yay! You finished your book!" Navaan said, cheering and throwing confetti in the air. "And whether you did it slowly and regularly over the semester or in one long and panicked writing session to make the arbitrary deadline doesn't matter! In fact, the second way is how most writers do it. TA DAAAAAA!!"

And then she was calling people up to her desk to hand them their stacks of books. "One if for you to keep, the other four are for...I dunno. Whatever you wanna do with 'em. Give 'em to people or shop around for an editor or...whatever. They're your problem now."

Congrats, class! You were all real writers now!

...Sorta.

How had Beta ended up here? A chance late-night rabbit hole of web browsing that landed her on an archive of papers about library science, which had piqued her interest enough to fill out the library aide application on impulse.

Look, she'd followed an impulse instead of analyzing something to death first. It was growth.

Anyway, now that she was here she had several books on the desk in front of her and... was perusing the digital archives on her Focus instead. (It was a texture thing. She was used to print media by now, but the feel of paper under her fingertips still wasn't her favorite sensory experience. Was there an irony here? Maybe.)

Today, class met in the Danger Shop. When they got there, it was a huge English seaside town, half in light and half in dark, with a bit of twilight in the middle. There was a pier on the beach, and there were helpful signs over a taxi stand that showed the directions to various museums and parks.

Jon waved at them. "So, this semester we've gone about learning to have fun. I've been told I need to get better at it. Therefore, your final will be to find ways to have fun in the city I grew up in. This is - more or less - Bournemouth. I've even left out most of the tourists. Enjoy!"

It was a challenge!

They had made it, somehow, to the end of the semester and the last class. It had been a good one for the most part and now it was time for the final exam. Cutter and Connor had decided to have the final for class be a fossil hunt, so messages had been sent to the class to meet them at the beach by the lighthouse.

"Alright, congratulations on making it through the class" he said when everyone had gathered. "Today for the final exam we are going to be looking for fossils here on the beach. There are many different kinds of fossils that can be found in areas like this, in the sand, out in the water, in the rocks here along the shore, and in the tide pools as well!" Connor would smile and look over at Cutter with a nod.

Cutter smiled as he took over the class, “some of the fossils that you can find out here are ammonites, trace fossils, carbon fossils and trilobites,” Cutter was definitely excited about the possibility of finding more trilobites, “we have various moddable equipment that you can use today along with a guide of the type of fossils to look out for but as always if you get stuck myself and Mr. Temple will be happy to assist you,” he smiled as he nodded back at Connor to finish up the class before sending everyone out on their fossil hunt.

"We will spend the class period looking for fossils and see who can find the most fossils and who can find the most unique fossils as well. And of course you are free to stay after class period ends if you wish to keep searching" Connor said with a grin. "We both will be here for a good while looking for fossils ourselves. So, if there are no immediate questions then let the fossil hunt begin!"

Today, the Danger Shop was set up to look like the fanciest of fancy museums, with class meeting on the steps outside.

"Today's the big day, when you're going to put your fake crime plans into real fake action." Yes that sentence made perfect sense to Aphra.

"Within that building is so much loot...-ed. Looted treasures, yes," Isabela added. "That's you're going to liberate for the good of everyone. And especially yourselves."

"Just know that whatever happens today, we'll be proud of you." As they watched. From outside. Did they look stupid enough to actually be taking part.

Don't answer that.
