"Last week," said Amaya at the start of class, with her usual nod to the students and a pound of her fist into her palm to show that she was ready to get to business, "we worked with simple machines. This week, we're working with much, much more complicated ones. And a whole lot bigger, too!"

Which would explain why they were in the Danger Shop instead of the usual shop classroom, just to make better use of the space that mostly consisted of a wide, open field overlooking an ocean on one side and a very tall stone wall on the other. Around them was mostly a collection of lumber and tools and other various bits and pieces that easily held the suggestion that they were going to be constructing quite the machine indeed. And if you know Amaya only a little, and considered that there were things like heavy rocks and pumpkins also scattered around, you could probably guess where this was going.

And if you didn't? Well, she was going to take care of that in the next breath.

"Trebuchets!" she said brightly. "Putting some of those simple machines into good use in a big way. Now, usually, I teach this class in the fall, which makes this particular lesson perfect for flinging pumpkins around Halloween time, but there's no reason flinging pumpkins with a large siege weapon can't be an all-year-round sort of thing. So, today, we're going to learn how to make a trebuchet and then enjoy how to use a trebuchet for the rest of class. Sounds pretty good, right? So let's get right into it!"

"It's kind of a shock that we haven't done cheese in cupcakes yet," Summer said, with a note of realization as she started class, "which is why that's exactly what we're doing this week. Now, of course, you've got things like cream cheese and ricotta that lend themselves very well toward cupcakes, if you're feeling particularly good, but what about things like cheddar? Very popular with apples, actually. Or blue cheese? I actually have some apple spice cupcakes right here that use blue cheese! I also have some made with mac and cheese!

“Mac and cheese is a meal and it doesn’t belong on a dessert!” Stark protested with a heavy sigh. “Some of those shouldn’t be cupcakes at all. But these strawberry ricotta ones should be.” They were even pink! Not that that was on purpose except for how it totally was.

"And some places do cheese cakes....not like that...traditionally!" Summer offered. "Like these cheese cupcakes that takes a cue from a popular Filipino-style cake with cheese in it."

“That’s not what cheesecakes are supposed to be,” Stark started to say but he looked at those with interest. “But those look…good?” What sorcery was this, Summer? “I’ll try one.” He was picking it up already.

"Let's all try one!" said Summer. "And see what other weird things we can do with cheese and cupcakes!"

"Our exam is in two weeks," Steve said with a relaxed smile, "so hopefully you've been taking good notes this semester."

"...we wrote an exam?" Tony, please.

"...I did," Steve said.

"Okay, maybe I've been in the lab too much," Tony admitted. "But today we're testing your bridges!"

Which he totally remembered. Unlike the exam.

"We're really excited to see your handwavy work!" Steve added enthusiastically.

"Since our time together is rapidly coming to close, I thought we'd try something a little different today," Ghanima said as the class met in the Danger Shop as handwavily ordered. "Today, we take Tzu a bit literally. Today we're playing with fire."

"Fire. The great cleanser, and the great equalizer. A weapon that can turn around and bite the hand that started it just as suddenly as the wind changes."

"Sun Tzu said: There are five ways of attacking with fire," Ghanima lectured, watching them inscrutably. "The first is to burn soldiers in their camp, the second is to burn stores. A third is to burn baggage trains; the fourth is to burn arsenals and magazines; and the fifth is to hurl dropping fire amongst the enemy. A rain of fire, if you will."

"In attacking with fire, one should be prepared to meet five possible developments: First, when fire breaks out inside to enemy's camp, respond at once with an attack from without. However, if there is an outbreak of fire, but the enemy's soldiers remain quiet, bide your time and do not attack."

"When the force of the flames has reached its height, follow it up with an attack, if that is practicable; if not, stay where you are."

"If it is possible to make an assault with fire from without, do not wait for it to break out within, but deliver your attack at a favorable moment. Last, but not least, when you start a fire, be to windward of it. Do not attack from the leeward unless you wish to feel your own flames."

"If we were starting a fire in a business setting, or on an emotional battlefield, perhaps we'd start with some lies, spread carefully where they can do the most damage. Insinuations whispered in corners where they can breed disaster."

"Starting a real fire requires just as much care, if not more. It is a living, breathing entity, and the burns are far more dangerous on a physical level."

It was with a resounding bang that the doors of Special Collections flew open, spit out a more-disheveled than usual John Constantine, and then slammed shut again.

"Yeah, well, me giving you a magical check-up isn't fun for me either, you arse," John yelled at the now-closed doors. "Fuck you!"

Special Collections, of course, remained silent, as he flipped it off and stomped into his office and slammed that door for good measure.

There was some banging and swearing before he re-emerged, the 'Now Hiring,' sign under his arm to slap the main doors to the library.

He needed to get someone in here besides Belle and Jo.
