deathsmajesty: Art: Liliana, Death's Majesty by Chris Raiis (Talking - Told You So)
[personal profile] deathsmajesty
Having class as usual was a generally stupid idea, but Liliana was nothing if not stubborn and contrary; err, that was, 'if not committed to her class.'

Nailed it.

"Today," she announced to whatever students in her class managed to show up, "we begin our last unit, the discussion of vampires. I have discovered since my arrival that vampires hold a particular space in pop culture and, perhaps even more than ghosts or zombies, they have been subject to revisions, rules, and romanticism in how they are portrayed. From ravening monsters to romantic heroes, vampires have been reformed and rewritten so often to fit the needs of the story that there are no real universal rules that all sets of vampire media follows. Today, we are going to discuss some basic aspects of vampirism, at least as you know it, and use that to serve as a point of comparison as we examine vampires in the future."

Because, Gaia help her, even Liliana did not have the ability to focus enough to deliver a full lecture about anything right now.

"So, some questions for you. Are vampires real where you're from, or simply creatures that exist in imagination? If yes, what rules do they follow; that is, what makes a vampire a vampire? What are their aspects, their characterizations? Do the stories of vampires in your world accurately portray them, or are liberties taken? How are they perceived by the population at large? And those of you for whom vampires are fictional, what rules, aspects, and characterizations do you think of when you imagine a typical vampire? Why? What works inspire you to imagine one type of vampire instead of another? Why? Are there any types of media that you would consider to form a vampiric 'canon'? What depictions of vampires to you disagree with or find ridiculous?"

Yes, that seemed like plenty enough for them to address. "Take notes on your answers and, as we start truly getting into the discussion over the next week, keep track of where your answers overlap with the vampires you're familiar with and the places they diverge."

Ignis had already been planning on canceling class today, pretty much from the moment he realized what was actually going on this week, more from the increasing catalogue of his own idiosyncrasies than anything else. Dropping pastries and caring not a whit about them? Distraction to the point of bumping into things he should know to stay clear of? Not even a whisper of a nagging internal monologue about shirking menial tasks to laze about? (Well, it could hardly be called lazing about, anyway). And it didn't take much to confirm that there were other factors at play here, and so his plan for his class was pretty much set from the beginning.

This was made even more firm by the appearance of a certain pie. He had considered, in defiance, of going against his original plan and holding class after all, but a different strategy was playing in his head, and, well, it would appear that at least one of his students was getting a very private lesson in the matter.

The others would certainly have to fend for themselves, and appropriate messages were sent out and set up on classroom doors so that those who were considering still making the attempt would be caught up to speed:

An important aspect of strategy is knowing which battles are worth fighting and which are not.
I quite suspect we all have engagements far worthier of our time and attention this week.
Enjoy the free period; use it wisely.

He knew he certainly would.

Was anyone even really planning on coming to class this week? Prompto didn't know, but he did know that it felt like he should at least try and give Liz a break from having him clinging all over her. Like, he was pretty smitten even on the normal days, but now? Yeah, no, even though the feeling had been entirely mutual so far, the last thing he wanted to do was smother her with his affection.

Well, okay, definitely not the last thing, that sounded pretty nice, actually, but...anyway, the point is, a little break might do them both some good, and so he was going to trot up to the school and hold class even if he was the only one there, because, really, all the were going to be doing was watching another documentary.

Was he going to be constantly checking how much longer in the run time? Yes, yes he was. Ugh! He did not have the constitution for this!

Well, it certainly was A Week, wasn't it?

That was why the classroom wasn't a tavern or anything out of the ordinary. No, it was just a classroom with a note on the board.

No class today due to allergies

Because if you thought Jane was going to teach on her own, you'd be wrong, class.

Belle was distracted today. Belle had been distracted all week.

The library was not helping. Or maybe it was, in its own way. It had certainly provided her with a vast array of reading material both fiction and non.

There was even one book she was certain she had looked at with Clare that one time they'd been trapped in Dite's. That one she was taking back to her room for later.

Right now she curled up in a chair reading a rather fantastically filthy romance featuring a knight. She kept losing her place while her thoughts wandered.

Somehow, she didn't mind.
