The classroom that day was filled with a lot of miscellaneous objects and a bunch of different lamps, from your basic table top desk lamp to your professional studio kits. And Prompto, standing amid all of them, was there with a bright grin of his own.

"Give you three guesses what we're focusing on today," he said. "First two don't count."

But, yes, it was lighting, and after confirming as much if anyone actually did take that moment to guess, he launched into his lecture. "Good lighting," he said, "can make a huge difference in any photo, whether it's an impressive landscape, a selfie, or just some random candid shot. Want to avoid getting tagged on an unflattering photo from someone's party? Know where the good lighting is and just stand there all night. You can also use lighting in different ways to capture different moods when shooting the same subject, which is kind of cool, and mostly what we'll be focusing on today. I'm going to go over a breakdown of some of the basics of lighting and some general tips, and then we're going to put everything into practice , and you guys can play around with different light sources on different subject matters and learn how to best put these things into practice!

"But before we really get into that," he said, with a nod, "you guys had Rule of Thirds homework, right? So let's see what you guys came up with, and then," he grinned, because he was absolutely not going to apologize for this, "let's get lit! And also, for next week, I'd like you guys to come in with a few shots utilizing natural lighting, a few shots using unnatural lighting, and a few shots that actually try to play with darkness and shadows. But first things first, our Rule of Thirds shots. Who's up?"

Today there were charcoal pencils of various sizes and those same two still life models of Avengers Tower and a fruit basket.

It was a new fruit basket, though. Fresh fruit and all.

"Welcome back," Tony said. "Today is, the medium is charcoal. Which is about as messy as engine grease, I've found."

Steve had a swipe of charcoal going from the side of his nose, along his cheek, and into his beard that he hadn't noticed yet, so he chuckled and shook his head. "I don't think it's that messy. This is a little like playing with the fingerpaints earlier in that it's much more tactile, but it combines what we did with the pencils because you only have one shade of color to be working with."

Tony hummed and would decidedly not be telling Steve about his smudges. Because he was far too polite for it. Or something. "Again, feel free to play around with it and get a feel for the material before starting."

"And remember that half the fun of this medium is using your fingers to smudge the lines," Steve added. "It shouldn't feel too precise."

Jon looked rough today, like he was barely holding it together. Which, to be fair, he was. But he was doing his best, here. His shirt was extra crisp and his trousers were (mostly) pressed to try to make up for it.

He waited until the students were there. Then another minute until he belatedly realised it. He rubbed his eyes and nodded.

"There is...water. Water is important to tea," he began. "It's important to have good water a...and to, um, use it properly." He waved at the bottle he had with him. "Purified water is the best. You don't want other things in your water. And...and pH is important, too. You don't want acidic or basic water, just...um...water."

Water was good.

"I made some tea with different waters. So we can taste them." He brought up thermoses. "There's...this one is the purified water, and this is tap water, and this is...this one is mineral water. Because...because I thought it was best to have three. They all use the same tea. Black tea. So...so let's taste them and see if you can taste the difference."

He thought for a second, then nodded again, pleased to have gotten through it.

[Iiiii posted this in my own journal, so here it is, too, for archival purposes.]
