in_sidon_we_trust: (grinning talking gesture)

"Good morning, my eager Hylian historians!"

Sidon was, of course, naturally inclined to gesture quite a lot during his lectures, but now that there was a long black cloak draped from his broad shoulders, you can bet those gestures were going to be increasing tenfold, all in ways that better emphasized the dramatic flow and movement of said cloak. Clothing truly was something that Sidon had never bothered with much, but he was starting to see the advantages of a good cloak. He felt fantastic with this thing!

(Although it would be very ineffective were one to be swimming, he felt).

"I hope you're ready," he continued, with a pump of his fist that threw in a little extra elbow just to make the cloak flow a little better, "to explore another of Hyrule's wide and varied races, because today, we're traveling to the northwest, to just below the snowy, icy Hebra mountains, into the Tabantha Frontier, which we will discover is hope to the fine and feathered Rito!"

Fly away with me... )

"Now," Sidon's voice went a little more serious for a moment, "I know that is not the most uplifting note to end on, but it is, alas, a harsh reality of the state of Hyrule today, one that any potential traveler should be quite aware of. The influence of Calamity Ganon, which we will discuss in more detail in a future class, is everywhere, sometimes in small reminders, and sometimes, in the case of the Rito, in large, looming, and inescapable ones. But I do not wish to have us end on such a somber reminder. For today, using the wonderful technology afforded to us in this world, I have for you recordings of some of the magnificent Rito songs! And so today, we will listen to some of them, and discuss, and I'd like, if you feel comfortable, to share with us all your own songs, should you have them, or at least share with us any sort of musical tradition you may have in your own cultures. That sounds much better than such a focus on looming doom and gloom, now, doesn't it?"

"Not all peoples or places you come across on your travels will have the same practices or morals as you do," Yennefer told the students. "How do you handle this?" She turned to the bard to answer the question, if he could.

"You... don't sleep with their husband's or wives?" Had this been an entire thing discussed before class started? Yes. Definitely.

Yennefer clapped her hands together once, showily and sarcastically. "Very good! This will reduce the possibility of your losing everything, including your trousers, when you have to climb out a window to avoid the angry other spouse considerably. But that is, of course, just one example. I'm sure you all can think of others."

"Such as researching local customs before arriving," Jaskier added, moving on from his annoyed look at that response. "Like tipping! Very important, that."

"In some places, such as...this one, it's not just to reward particularly good service, but to make up an absurd shortfall in legal wages so people can afford things like 'rent' and 'food,'" Yennefer explained. "I have no idea who came up with this system, but there you have it. And then there are little nuances such as: are you expected to greet the shopkeep upon entering a store, or is mutual avoidance until you need assistance considered more polite? It's all very confusing." Possibly even moreso when you were dressed like you'd escaped a Ren Faire.

"So, perhaps we should start by pointing out the differences we've experienced here compared to home," Jaskier ventured.

"Well, there's the tipping thing," Yennefer said. "Living together before marriage isn't considered shocking, that's another. Apparently people out and about in 'shorts' and 'tank tops' aren't considered to be running about in their underwear..."

"Indoor plumbing!" Jaskier added cheerfully.

"And electricity! But they won't sell you alcohol on the mainland unless you're over twenty-one, which is frankly absurd. Some people have been married for years with two children by then." What? "What customs or moral practices of your homeland do you think might confuse newcomers?

Lana had turned the collar on her cape down but was otherwise unfazed by it. There was a reason for that.

She grinned at the students as they all presumably showed up similarly clothed. "Since the island has an interesting idea of fashion today, I thought I'd go it one step further and discuss Sith fashion today."

She pulled out her holocomm. "Traditionally, Sith fashion has as one of its goals to intimidate your opponents. Darth Marr's armor is a good example of that. It has spikes that are largely decorative but intimidating, it makes him look even larger - and he was not a small man - and it hides his face with a mask. There were numerous rumors about that mask and what he might look like underneath, which fueled both his mystique and the intimidation."

She switched to another picture. "The Dread Masters used elaborate golden masks that were themselves designed to be terrifying, and their robes both repeated the patterns in those masks and matched each other, showing them to be a united front while each frightening in their own right."

She shrugged. "There are as many forms of Sith armor as there are of Sith. And a lot of them have capes, too." She twitched her own. "I've only got the one holocomm, but I've sent a catalogue to each of your phones. Take a look. What so rt of armor would you want to have? Would you have a cape or not? Let's discuss the utility of each of your choices."

Jo wasn’t sure what to make of the long black cape that she found herself wearing that day and she couldn’t get it off no matter how much she tried, so eventually she ended up giving up and was trying to ignore the cape as best she could.

This proved to be rather difficult since she found that it kept getting in the way whenever she tried to put books back on the shelf and that the cape kept getting caught on the shelves, so it was taking her a lot longer that morning to finish reshelving the books that she had to put away.
