somethingwithturquoise: (just so happy right now)

There was an easy, eager grin on Summer's face when everyone came into the classroom that day, a certain spark in her eye that she hoped could effectively make them start sweating, because it was very clear she was really excited to get into this week's pie, and hopefully, that should make them all worry at least a little bit.

"Hey, guys!" she greeted them brightly. "I hope you're ready for another exciting pie adventure, as we're headed to the Great Depression era with a little something called Mock Apple Pie. Because, you see, when times were a little rough, you got a little creative with things. An real apple pie requires a lot of apples, which might be hard to come by, but a mock apple pie brings the promise of tasting like an apple pie, while using much more affortable buttery crackers like Ritz and a whole lot less of it, too. Does it fulfil on this promise, though? That's what we're going to find out today. I mean, we can call it a mock apple pie all we want, but let's be honest, guys. Today's lesson is essentially a cracker pie."

So now you should know why she was so thrilled.

But, oh, just you wait, that was just the half of it.

"Let's get started!"

The hopes that some other new random event that made it rather difficult for the class to meet again that week were unfortunately dashed at it appeared to be a very normal Tuesday, and the only thing that prevented Shunsui from trying to create some sort of other excuse to not bother was that it would probably take more work to orchestrate such a thing than it did to just drag himself over to the school and the danger shop and get something going that he could just instruct his students to do and then hang back and let them have at it.

Really, it wasn't that much different than how training for his division usually went, and so there they were, another week, and another battle game, and Shunsui gave them a soft smile and considered, for a moment, the lighting overhead before returning his attention to them.

"Konnichiwa, ducklings ♥," he greeted. "This week, we'll be exploring a game called Kageoni, or 'Shadow Demon' ♥. Now....the proper manipulation of shadows is actually a very complex art that is a little difficult to teach, or even program," it probably wasn't that difficult to program it, he just didn't want to bother, "so it won't be too terribly complex today, but, with this technique, when one person is able to 'catch' another person's shadow by stepping into it, they gain an advantage, as stepping into that person's shadow will effectively freeze them, leaving them open to attack. They, of course, can still defend themselves, but they cannot move and the other person has the ability to cloak themselves in the shadow if they so choose.

"Now," he grinned a little more, his finger pointing upwards, "one thing about shadow games is that they are heavily dependent on lighting, neh ♥? So just to make things a bit more interesting, the lighting in here will shift and change at random, which may drastically alter how substantial the shadows are, which could be used to your advantage or be used against you. You'll have to be aware of how the lighting changes your shadows to make you...or your opponants...more vulnerable ♥.

"Take a moment, choose your weapons, find a spot, and we shall begin ♥."

Was the framed photo of Captain America and Sam still prominently displayed in the classroom behind the large felt eagle? Of course it was! Did that mean Sam was carrying the framed photograph to and from class each time? Of course he was!

As always, Sam began speaking precisely on time. That was just how Sam was. Prompt and efficient!

“A key component of Americana is nostalgia! Longing for a period in the past. A much less weird time.” A time before Sam had come to an island full of drunken squirrels or a theater full of weirdos, for example. “Today I, Sam Eagle, have brought you a film to watch! A very American film! Set in a simpler time in a small midwestern town in America. A film about music! With a marching band! I enjoy marching bands. And marches. Very patriotic!”

It was also a film that Sam didn’t really read the description of closely. He really wouldn’t approve of meta for Harold Hill’s shenanigans. Sam never approved of shenanigans.

"Once you've figured out what your target wants and why they want it, you can move on to how to give it to them, or make them think they're getting it," Yennefer told her class. "For example: if our Henry here claims to want sons for some reason that can be satisfied other than through procreation--continuation of his legacy, or a genuine concern for continuance of governmental stability--how can you do that, or at least make it look like you're doing that? If he really is dead set on procreation, how can you work toward that goal? Perhaps you could arrange, or purport to arrange, his marriage to a widow of proven fertility--"

"Virgins only!" the holographic Henry insisted, and Yennefer paused to look very annoyed indeed.

"--or a virgin with wide hips and crossed fingers," she said after a moment. "Or at least make him think that's what you're doing. Perhaps you could introduce him to a biology lesson, since apparently the sex of the child is down to the man, who knew? But only if you think you could do so without losing your head. Kings, so touchy. Or you could simply sell him some ditchwater at an exorbitant price, guaranteed to guarantee he will only have male issue. There are many options. How would you like to proceed?"

"We train like we fight, and we fight like we train!"

Unlike the last couple weeks, the bootcamp was meeting outside today, by the gates to the school. While Travis had (finally) learned what the Danger Shop could actually do last week, the island itself worked perfectly well for today's class.

Travis stood at the front of the group, wearing the workout version of his station uniform -- a t-shirt with the station's shield on the breast, and a pair of sweatpants. The students, hopefully, had figured out to wear things they could move and sweat in when coming to class.

"That's something of an unofficial firefighter's motto. Fighting fires is hard work. It's physical work. You've learned that already, by running in your turnouts and working with hoses. Our equipment is heavy, and we have to be ready to move quickly with it at a moment's notice. We can't guarantee access to anything but what we bring ourselves on a job, and we have to be ready and willing to do anything in an emergency in order to save lives."

He looked from student to student, then nodded behind them.

"Which really really regularly means being able to run up and down stairs. Fortunately, if there's one thing that Fandom has in spades, it's stairs."

He clapped his hands together and pressed them outwards, stretching his palms and cracking his knuckles.

"Your assignment today is an easy one! I'm not going to make you carry anything you don't already have on you. All you have to do is run the entire town as fast as you can. I've mapped out a route that should have you hitting every single stair out there." He grinned. "Have fun!"
