One of the benefits of not living on this island most of the time was getting to only hear about certain events like late night fire drills and being able to be slightly smug about having been able to avoid them, an attitude that was definitely going to color Ignis's lesson for that day.

"Good morning, everyone," he greeted the class with a nod and a slightly hidden smirk. "Hopefully, you've all managed to rest up a bit after yesterday morning's very early excitement. Today, we're going to be covering a very classic dish that, when made well and presented properly, can make for a very striking visual, as well as an excellent way to start your day, especially when presented as a fetching open-faced variant, which we will be doing today. I am, of course, talking about the Croque Madame, which will involve the skillful execution of a few skills, especially the invaluable ability to make a perfect egg, as well the execution of a basic béchamel sauce.

"So, without further ado, let's get started."

Well, hopefully everyone caught up on sleep for class! Because it was back to the extreme competition that was paintball.

"Welcome back," Tony said, coffee in hand. Because he spent way too long trying to figure out why the alarms all went off before deciding it was just Fandom. "Today we'll be trying something new with traps."

Tony, no.

"No holes," Steve said, like that would make it better.

"There are paint showers throughout the arena for anyone to use, but also for people to avoid." Look, he'd been inspired the other day.

"And traps that will yank you into trees," Steve said, beaming like this was not a terrible, terrible idea. "Have fun!"

Look, they had to do something to up the difficulty here.

For the second week in a row, cupcake class was being held where and when it was meant to. Perhaps this would even be a consistent thing for the rest of the session!

“I hope everyone slept longer today than yesterday,” Stark said once everyone had arrived. “Without the alarms. We’ll try not to burn anything today so there won’t be any repeats of that. But at least we’d all be awake for it if it happened now.” Unlike yesterday. In the middle of the night. “I try not to burn anything anyway. If I can help it.”

“I thought we might do coffee cupcakes after the lack of sleep yesterday but I’ve done that before. Wouldn’t want to repeat myself too much. Even if they are delicious.” And caffeinated, which was sometimes very important.

“Instead, I thought flowers. Not the same. Not even close to the same, I know.” He was still on a bit of an outside kick. Flowers made sense to him.

“Mostly lavender. It works well in cupcakes. And lemonade.” Which was last week! See, this all made sense. At least to Stark. “One recipe has sugared flowers, which don’t have to be lavender. They take time to dry and there wouldn’t be time so I have some of those ready, if you want to use them for decorating. All edible, I promise.” He was absolutely not out to poison anyone. Especially not with cupcakes.

“So. There are flowers.” Stark pointed to the parchment lined baking sheet full of sugared flowers in front of him. “And the recipes.” He pointed to the stack of papers on the counter. “There are three of those.”

“I’m here if you want help. Or need help. And you can always work together, if you like.”

"First aid," a very hungover Yang, who had simply taken her earlier birthday celebration onto the mainland for the last day or so in an effort to outrun her feelings keep the party going, stated. "Something we probably should have talked about before the packing class, so you know what supplies to take, but something something hindsight."

"In my world, unless you're traveling with someone with a healing power, you need to carry at least a basic first aid kit. Grimm don't exactly patch you up after you slaughter them." Yang took a second to adjust her sunglasses to protect her eyes from the light better. Ugh. "Also, your healing teammate might be the one down-and-out, so you shouldn't ever count on them."

"So, what do you need to carry? Bandages, disinfectant, pain killers, and maybe stuff for a splint or two. Emergency flares. Trail rations, the type that taste terrible but never expire. A water filtration kit. Some of those foil blankets that fold up tiny but retain heat. Stimulants, so you can power through getting back to civilization or stave off falling asleep when you're concussed. Tweezers. Scissors. Needle, thread, and rope. And yes, this is all basic first aid, not just camping supplies."

"So tell me what type of first aid you'd carry on your world. Just... not loudly."

"'The first principles of the universe are atoms and empty space; everything else is merely opinion'," Ender quoted, once the last of his students had settled in on the lawn. "If you did the reading I assigned a few weeks ago, you'll know that quote from the Greek philosopher Democritus. If you didn't, for instance because you were stuck in a hole, well, I won't dock points."

He smiled briefly, then reached for a bottle of water.

"Like many of the famous old Greeks, Democritus concerned himself with many areas of study, from physics to mathematics. But he also dabbled in philosophy." His mouth curved. "Actually, they called him 'The Laughing Philosopher', because he 'laughed at humanity's follies', which should tell you a thing or two about the man."

He took a sip of water.

"Democritus believed it was almost impossible to know the truth. After all, we see the world through our senses, which he felt were innately subjective. Who's to say the color 'purple' looks the same to your eyes as they do to a friend's? He called this 'bastard' knowing: to know only through the senses. Real truth can only be attained through reason."

Another sip, then he set it down. "We're all from different universes with different rules, we're all people with different perceptions and different experiences," he said. "What's true to you can be quite fundamentally untrue to your friend from another universe where purple is a little yellow, actually. And still, here at Fandom, we manage to relate ourselves to people who are so very different from ourselves. In a way, I suppose, we collectively come together to decide on what we think is true, and we live by that."

He shrugged. "Of course, Democritus also pointed out that we can reason our way into beautiful theories about the state of the universe, but the only way to confirm those theories is to see them with our imperfect senses." He sat back. "Have you befriended anyone, or seen another universe, that made you question whether your own perceptions are true? Do you think Democritus is right, or is there such a thing as real truth?" he said. "Does it even matter?"
