Diaz was apparently stuck in Baltimore overnight for a thing, and, honestly, even if she could make it back in time for class, she would have probably let Amaya keep her idea for a subtstitute class, because it was kind of perfect, and definitely badass. So all the proper channels of communication went out to her students to let them know that they'd be meeting in the Forge in town for class that day, for a special guest teacher lesson.

"Morning, everyone," Amaya greeted the class with a nod and a grin when they'd all gotten there and it was time to begin. "For those of you who don't know me, my name's Amaya Blackstone, I'm the local blacksmith in this town, and, since Detective Diaz couldn't make it today, she asked me to take over her class to teach you all a little bit of the trade, because it's sort of hard to argue that taking really hot metal and beating it into submission and shape isn't quintesentially 'badass.'

"I might," she allowed with a tilt in her grin, "be a little biased, though.

"More specicially," she continued, "you'll be working on something that's fairly easy but could one day be useful, and is still a lot of fun to make, and that's a crowbar. It uses a lot of basic blacksmithing techniques that work for a good foundation for branching out into other things, so it's a good introductory piece for anyone just starting out, and a good way to hone the basics for any of you who might actually have forging experience. So! With that said, I'll take a few moments to show you how it's done, and then we'll take turns with a couple of you at a time to give it a try for yourselves. Don't forget your protective gear; I expect everyone in an apron, goggles, and gloves. Safety first! And then we'll get to it."

And it would be good to get use out of that second anvil again, at that!

"Any questions before we begin?"

Yennefer was positively beaming as she greeted the class today. "The castle has awakened this morning to the news that the queen has been safely delivered of a healthy baby..."

Yennefer paused and took a deep breath, and the smile fell off her face. "Girl. The new princess joins her five sisters in the nursery." She cut a glance over at the king, sulking upon his throne. "Did I happen to mention that this is the sort of kingdom where only men are dubbed fit to rule? I don't suppose it came up until now.

"Now, his majesty here has several options in this situation. He could change the law of succession. Some other kingdoms already allow rule by women, and he has several lovely, intelligent daughters." She looked at the king again and felt compelled to explain, "...they take after their mother. He could cross his fingers and hope that the next one is a boy, solving the problem, or that the queen dies in childbirth, leaving him free to remarry. Or he could decide that this is all the queen's fault, as obviously the man has nothing to do with whether a baby is a boy or a girl, and he needs to get rid of her immediately and find a new wife who will give him lots of sons!" Yennefer gave her students another smile. This one was bitter and mocking. "Guess which option he's chosen.

"Again, within the umbrella of 'get rid of the queen,' the king has multiple options. He could reason with the queen and convince her it's for the best for everyone, and quietly divorce her, setting her up with her own household and all honors. He could unilaterally divorce her, bulling it through the courts despite the objections of the faith and her noble relatives. He could accuse her of adultery, manufacture evidence, and execute her. Or he could hire an assassin to get rid of her quickly so he can just move on with things. There's a lady in waiting he's got his eye on." Yennefer gave the king a contemptuous look. "Again, you can guess which option our sovereign with impulse control problems has chosen. Your job is to talk him out of it, of course...and probably most of that last list, as well. Best of luck."

It was the third class in a row without a trap, clearly it was time to be suspicious.

"So, family, isn't it great," Aphra said, far too dryly. "Either they want nothing to do with you or they're trying to control your life, and unlike most other problems in life, you can't shoot them. Not that you should be shooting all of your problems. Just the ones you can't think your way around."

"Anyway, your task today is to enjoy a nice dinner with your parents and explain that you're now part of a bonded triad and all three of you are dropping out of university to run a pirate crew together. Also they've invited a nice girl without a criminal record or bounties in three different systems over to set you up with."

It turned out there was a trap this class. The the most dangerous kind of all...

The auditorium was ready again today: folding chairs, check. Rostrum, check. Bored students, check.

Anakin walked up onto the stage. "Hello again, students. Today we have a special guest that is not going to pretend to kill teddy bears!"

He hoped.

"He's--" he pulled his notecard out, "--Nick Miller, and he's here to talk about Creativity and You, or Writing the Great American Novel."

So that should be nice and non-explosive!
