raisedbybooklice: Alexandra Dowling as Elisabeth Scrivener (Head Bowed: Studying)

When Elisabeth got into the library today, the books had set up a contingent of guards outside the door to Special Collections. They formed two lines, each three books thick and chest about chest high, with other books acting as crenelations. Other books were marching back and forth from one end to the other, fluttering their pages in little salutes as they passed each other.

Confused, Elisabeth drifted over to watch. As soon as she did, the marching books flung themselves into the air practically bristling with aggression.

"Okay, okay, settle down," Elisabeth said, taking several steps back. "I don't want to go in there anyway. That's the vault right? Where all the most dangerous of the books are?" Close enough. "Nope. I don't have nearly enough salt or iron to go in there. Just my luck to turn something into a Malefict and have to explain it to Director Constantine. No thank you."

She spun on her heel and did a little marching of her own, right back to the circulation desk where she started processing books for the Interlibrary Loans.

Hmm. The Collected Works of Shakespeare to McClellan, C; the usual spot, 1998 Missouri. The Aeneid to Hypatia; 50 A.D. Egypt. Flight of Dragons to Cat, C; Whenever BookWorld. And several others besides.

Most of the instructions made no sense, but Elisabeth was determined to send them out anyway. She settled into work while the books watched her, their aggression turned into something like dismay when she refused to engage.

"I am not paying attention to you," Elisabeth told them, not looking up from her work.

A little bit before classes started, the PA system came to life with a screech, and Zoe's voice could be heard throughout the school.

"Hello everyone, this is Principal Winchester. It's my pleasure to announce the following members of this year's Student Council: Gratuity Tucci, Janet Kim, Lana Beniko, Nina, Shuri, Sidon, and Tisarwat. I'll see you all tomorrow at lunchtime."

With her flist-spamming administrative business done for the morning, Zoe opened up a room for study hall and settled in with her laptop. She had other very important business to take care of... namely, looking at recipes and trying to find ones that weren't just Pinterest links she couldn't access.

No, she didn't have an account. She might have been a mother, but that was just a dark path she didn't want to go down.

No snacks today, kids, just Anakin at the front of the class with some deeply stupid hair that he hadn't found time to fix yet. "There's a quote in the Bible, a religious text on this world often used to define its cultural ethics that says, 'But anyone who is dishonest in little matters will be dishonest in important matters.'"

He slid his hand through his hair. "I'm not sure I would interpret that to mean that if you lied to me and said my hair doesn't look that bad, it would stand to reason that you are shoplifting from T&C in your spare time, but there is something to the idea that when you start lying about little things, it becomes easier to lie about big things. So today I want to have a discussion about where your line is for shading the truth. Are lies of omission okay for you? Denials to someone's face when they ask you about something you did but they can't prove? How about denials when they can prove it and you just don't think they want to? Is it different for you to lie to your peers than it is to lie to someone in a position of authority?"

He smiled. "Parents Weekend is coming up. How much of the bald truth of this place will you tell those visiting you? How much will they believe?"
