"Good morning, class," Amaya was her usual too-cheerful-for-a-Monday-morning-really self as the students got to the shop, "what we're going to work on today is going to be a project that last us through a couple of weeks. I got a job down at the smith that got me thinking that it might be a little fun to teach you all how to do some foundry work. Unfortunately, the shop's not all that big and it would be tricky getting the most out of if we had to take turns around my foundry, so today we're going to do the next best thing, and that's make your own.

Because who doesn't want a little mini furnace that can melt your face off? )

"And that's pretty much it! Nice work today! If you'd like, I've got some metal spray paint in a few different colors if you want to give your buckets a little personal touch before you leave; we can leave them to dry so they're good and ready next week, and we'll get to use them. Any questions before we go?"

"Hello, class," Carter said, smiling gently at all of them as they met in the classroom, the usual cushions set up for the children to sit upon. Today's cookie offering was homemade Oreos, since Carter hadn't been able to bring himself to offer anyone the over-processed, store-bought kind. "I hope you all had a good weekend, though the weather wasn't the best."

He hadn't minded the wet, rainy weather, even though it had kept him inside for most of the weekend.

"For those of you who might not know it yet, this coming weekend is Parents Weekend, which means a great many of your classmates and, perhaps yourselves, will be having visitors to the island."

Fjord hadn't actually minded the weather. Hadn't stopped him from going outside in it, anyway. But then, Fjord kind of had an affinity for the wet.

"While neither of us has any experience with this particular sort of weekend," he added, "it's likely safe to assume that most visitors to the island will be fairly unfamiliar with Fandom's... peculiarities." This was a very polite way to put it, even for the charismatic half-orc. "Some folks might want to ease their visitors into them. Some might want to avoid them entirely." A beat. "Good luck to them."

He didn't intend to hide, no. He'd sit in his office for meetings with perfectly normal modern human families and they would deal with it, so help him.

More under the cut! )

They needed all the help they could get.

Tip was having trouble staying awake in the library today. She hadn't slept well last night, thanks to a bizarre anxiety dream involving sword practice, a giant game of stickyfish, and a complete inability to find a pair of functional pants.

Some dream interpretation books offered to help her out after her third time jerking herself awake, so Tip described as much as she could remember of it to them. Being dream interpretation books, they didn't actually have any real answers, but they tried their best.

"Not sure an interpretive dance of my interpreted dream is going to help, folks," Tip said, after watching them flip their pages at each other and do spins for a few minutes. "But thanks anyway."

Your teachers were in the classroom today! Don't get too excited about it, though. There was just the word 'DOCTORS' written on the board. It was underlined more than strictly necessary.

"It's not my fault that cancer runs in the family," Wade grumbled, arms crossed over his chest. "I assume. Alcoholism definitely. Cancer is iffy."

"Probably something we should find out before we decide we're having kids or not," Vanessa said, through her teeth and smiling. "So let's talk about doctors! I know, doctors are expensive and you think you can just duct tape it up and keep going. But maybe not! Maybe they're professionals who know important things that can keep you from dying! Just a thought."

"Also, don't take up any creepy ass government agents' offers to cure whatever might end up ailing you. Just don't do it. It'll end in the highest grossing R rated movie in ages. And I just can't have that kind of competition," Wade added. "That bastard Tom Hardy is coming for me on that front."

"So remember, kids," Vanessa said, "if you feel pain during sex, you should see a doctor! It could be an STD! Or it could be a warning sign you should address before one day you randomly faint and it turns out you have stage four cancer of the everything." That was an unusually specific hypothetical, Vanessa.

"I have super powers now," Wade stage whispered to the class. "It's fine."

Vanessa turned her entire upper body to look at him for a moment, wide-eyed and incredulous, then turned back to face the class and muttered, "It is not fine and if you ever do that to me again I will kill you," sotto voce, out of the side of her mouth. Then she said, louder and brighter, "Anyway, the point is: doctors! They're your friends, as long as they're not also evil! Now, I want everyone to think back on occasions when maybe you didn't see a doctor and you should have, and how dumb you were being. And if you're a sensible person who doesn't have an example like that, congratulations. You win this class."
