"Practical pop quiz," Aphra called out cheerfully as her class arrived at the Danger Shop. "I've set up an obstacle course to see if you can figure out what not to do and what to do."

Yes, an obstacle course, and not at all a deathtrap waiting to happen. Definitely not.

Aphra, no.

Welcome once more into the swamp simulation in the Danger Shop, kids! Verity was getting a lot of mileage out of that particular sim--probably because many cryptids flourished in places where humans didn't like to go. Verity was standing on a small patch of dry land, one of the very few that could be found and next to her was an image of a winged, humanoid figure, roughly Verity's own height.

Which wasn't that tall to begin with, but details. )

"Today, we're playing a game. Red versus blue. You all have butterfly nets, your own weapons, and whatever you can find or build out here. Your job is to be the team with the most swamp fairies at the end of the class, without killing any. You have an hour to round up fairies, sabotage the other team, and figure out the best strategy to deal with capture." Verity wasn't going to point out that the fairies had weapons that could easily cut their way free from a net--or that she hadn't provided them with any way to store the caught fairies until the end of the class when it was time to tote them up. She trusted the students to find a way. "Ready...set..." The lights in the air all vanished. "Go!!

Which was when the swamp fairies divebombed the class. Good luck fighting something that small and quick--and then trying to capture it as well.

Library, Wednesday

The library today was quiet. The books were behaving themselves, there weren't too many returns that needed to be put on shelves. Peridot was actually... kind of bored.

There was nothing to be done about it, she supposed, but to find a book to read. Maybe one of those fiction ones that seemed so popular.

And that was why Peridot could be found reading a romance novel featuring swashbuckling pirates if anybody were to come by the library today. The cover art almost certainly featured Fabio. It was that kind of romance novel.

It was fascinating.

"Welcome back, class!" Jenkins greeted, pulling on an enormous, old fashioned fur coat. "I do hope you've dressed warmly today — those of you affected by cold, anyway — and not just because of the nor'easter we're getting. If you don't have any sub-zero rated clothing and would like some, I have a few extra coats and boots. I'd advise you to don them now, as our portal is due to arrive at any moment."

The portal, in fact, obliged by appearing shortly before he finished his sentence. Jenkins clapped his gloved hands together.

"There we are! Hoods up, please. Let us go, then, and meet some of the wildlife of the arctic." He waved the class through, once they seemed to be appropriately dressed for the weather, and they all stepped out onto a snow-and-ice covered field surrounded by craggy, towering mountains, and cut through by a dark, icy waterway. "Stay close, students! You don't want to end up lost or under water here. Welcome to Auyuittuq National Park, in Nunavut, Canada. As you may already know, yesterday was the vernal equinox here in the northern hemisphere of planet Earth — that is the day on which the sun is up as long as it is down. Which makes today the first day in six months that there will be more daylight than darkness, even here near the very ends of the earth. Eventually — in just a few weeks, in fact — the sun will rise on this land and not set completely again until September, though it will remain at such an angle that the temperatures in this area will never get much warmer than it's been most of the winter in Fandom. As you can see, it's quite a beautiful, if barren place, with very little by way of vegetation. And yet, if we're lucky, we can still find animal life. In fact, that's your assignment for today." Apparently someone had clued Jenkins in that modern schooling tended to include assignments as well as lectures. He pulled a couple curled pieces of paper from his coat pocket and passed them out. "Find as many of the creatures on this list as you can. Please be careful and stay within sight of myself and the portal at all times. If you get lost, the rest of us will leave without you."

"We've discussed what happens when the being you're briefing refuses to read your notes," Anakin began. "Today we're going to brainstorm solutions for what you should do when you specifically write in big capital letters 'DON'T DO THE THING' and the very next thing they do is what you specifically told them not to."

There was a pause. "In this scenario your boss is not temporarily de-aged into a four year old child, or your species' equivalent age."
