Students would get an email this morning, because, um, Brooke didn't come back from China yet.

Sorry, guys, class is going to be canceled today. Hopefully this means you got to sleep in. But next week, class!

"Morning, students," Ghanima said as everyone assembled. "In light of the past week's vacation, and the fact my brain is currently on a different galactic time standard, you're going to be watching The Siblings Morbid today. I'd like you to make yourselves comfortable, be it on the floor or at your desks, and decide what myths, if any, you see referenced in the movie, or if it's pure fairy tale."

"There is tea, coco, water, and hot apple cider in the marked containers along the south wall. Please, help yourselves."

"So we're all back from China. And no one stole a panda," Deadpool said, shaking his head in disappointment at the class. And himself. He shoulda stolen that panda when he had the chance.

"I'm not mad," Vanessa said. "I'm just disappointed." She'd really wanted that panda. "Anyway, we decided we should probably at least try to teach you about eating 'healthy' or whatever." There were finger quotes.

"That means one green thing per meal," Deadpool explained helpfully. "And yes, the Shamrock Shake counts."

It really didn't.

"That's food coloring." Even Vanessa had to draw a line somewhere. "Parsley? Parsley could count. But parsley is expensive. See, this is what no one tells you. Or they just lie. 'Oh, eating healthy on a budget is so easy!' No, it's not, asparagus costs a fortune and then you have to trim it and throw half of it away."

"Plus is makes your pee green." That wasn't true either. Look, Deadpool was doing his best here and his best wasn't very good.

"So how do you eat healthy on a budget?" If Vanessa sounded like she was hoping the teenagers would tell her, well... "Does anyone have any tips?"

Yes, they were going to get scurvy, kids. Or would if they didn't drink those fruity cocktails. "That doesn't involve shoplifting. But it'd be a good tip."

"Maybe you could...shop sales?" That sounded like a good tip. "And um..." Vanessa was openly looking for advice on her phone. "Meal plan!"

"Start a farm," Deadpool added, just off his dome because he wasn't here to solve income inequality or food deserts, okay? "Go to one of those bullshit farmer's markets."

"...yeah, we're not really qualified for this," Vanessa admitted. "But we bought some vegetables on the school credit card, so, you know, do something with those."

Spending a week in China had been awesome, but it had told Tip in no uncertain terms that she didn't know anything about China. So she was reading up on Chinese history today at the library.

There was a lot of it. Like, a lot. She'd had no idea just how much. She knew that her education growing up in America had been scant, but holy crap.

This week, the class had received handwavy e-mail messages to meet at Portalocity. When they got there, Hannibal greeted them and handed out a list of fruits and vegetables. "Today, we will be covering selecting good produce. The first lesson to buying decent fruits and vegetables is, whenever possible, to buy things which are organic, grown locally, and currently in season. It's healthier and tastes much better. That said, I realize that you may not always have that option. There are some foods that buying organic is more important for than others, due to the amount of chemicals they retain or the types used."

He nodded at the paper. "In addition, as you will see, there are certain times in Baltimore during which very little is in season. Therefore, we will be traveling to Baltimore in August, so as to actually find something more than apples."

He held up the list. "I've included some simple reminders about how to choose the best of each; I will go into more detail once we arrive, and feel free to take notes. As our class activity today, instead of cooking, you will be choosing your own produce to bring back from a local farmers' market. At this particular market, most things are grown organically, and should be marked as such. Stay close and pay attention while I orient you, and then find the produce I assign."

He smirked. "It's in your best interest to perform well; once you've completed the assignment, you are welcome to relax in the August weather. If you need help, I will be pleased to answer any questions. You may also ask the farmers, but please remember that we aren't on the island; they may not be used to much strangeness."

He waited to see if there were any current questions, then nodded them through the portal.

"I would like you each to pick out one head of spinach, one bunch of grapes, one eggplant, several tomatoes, a few onions, several apples, a couple of parsnips, and one other item of your choice."

When you've all chosen your produce, Hannibal will grade you on your choices, and then you can all relax in the August sun!

He'll let you taste what you chose, what he chose, and some of the same items of produce he picked at random from the non-organic, non-local supermarket. (Feel free to not taste a difference and make him feel sorry for you!)
