jedigrammarians: (Aphra: totes classy)

Aphra was actually in the classroom this week, eating pancakes. She wasn't sure why there'd been pancakes on her desk when she'd arrived, but she wasn't going to turn down free food.

She also wasn't going to say anything about missing class last week, surely they'd figured that much out by now?

"So apparently tomorrow's some big romantic deal on this planet," she said, after swallowing. "Which means it's time for some advice. Don't."

She cut another bite off the pancakes. "I don't mean sex. Hey, you use protection, make sure everyone's clean and having a good time, check no one's going to try eating anyone after, go wild. I mean romance. Romance makes you dumb.

"You say dumb things. You do dumb things. You panic because you realise how serious it's getting maybe there's some backstabbing, and the next few times she sees you she tries to kill you, really it's better all around if there are no feelings involved above the belt."

That was a very specific example, Aphra.

"Welcome back, students," Jenkins greeted as his class gathered. "I assure you, the amphibious plague that afflicted us last week has been taken care of. Today, we are being visited instead by something I hope you will find rather more agreeable, if for no other reason than that it would find it terribly difficult to jump onto anyone's head." He smiled, waving the students into the classroom, where they would find three large, faintly rock-like creatures making their slow way around the room.

The lesson plan Verity had planned had gotten scrapped by a phone call about ten minutes before class. She might have cancelled class entirely if her stupid cold hadn't made her do that last week.

"Okay!" she said when everyone had arrived, very grateful her class was tiny. "Today you're about to get a hands-on lesson about a cryptid called the Mishigamaa. The Mishigamaa is one of the five extant species of plesiosaurs that have survived to the present day; they can only be found in certain lakes up in the general Michigan area, leaving them to be colloquially called the 'Michigan lake monsters'. Their proper name, 'Mishigamaa', comes from the Ojibwa word for 'large lake,' though we're pretty sure the Ojibwa used a slightly different term for the creatures themselves."

How did one say 'Oh shit!' in Ojibwa?

"Due to human interference, like pollution and overfishing, the Mishigamaa are near extinction, spawning several cryptozoological conservation efforts. However, since Mishigamaa only mate after a pod member dies, keeping their numbers stable is very hard. This is compounded by the fact that Mishigamaa are air-breathers and after the rigors of birth, mother nor calf need to come up for air and rest. If they remain submerged for long, they will start to drown. Most Mishigamaa sightings occur during this time and can lead to injuries and death for Mishigamaa and spectators alike, as the mother tries to protect the calf."

Verity pulled back her hair into a no-nonsense ponytail. "One of the conservationists I mentioned before has a Mishigamaa mother in labor, but she is young and a rescue and it isn't going well. So, hope you dressed warmly, class, because you get to see your first real cryptids in the flesh today. While participating in the miracle of birth. Let's go!"

Library, Wednesday

Peridot still wasn't entirely certain what the point of this holiday was, but she was aware that she had gotten flowers. 31 flowers, in fact, in various colors. All 31 of them, the roses and carnations alike, were tucked neatly into her hair. She had enough of it, after all, and no idea what to do with flowers besides. It made for a rather glorious flower crown, if Peridot did say so herself.

Pumpkin, not to be left out, also had the orange carnation that Summer had sent to her tied to her stem. She was keeping Peridot company today at the library, napping on top of the desk while Peridot sorted through books to put away, a silly little smile on her face.

This planet was so strange. But that was okay.

The students would find a note on the door to the classroom that read:

Everyone in my house has the flu. Go home, drink liquids, don't be here. --Anakin
