atreideslioness: (I am listening)

As the students entered this week, they would see a passage on the board:

Sun Tzu said: We may distinguish six kinds of terrain, to wit:
(1) Accessible ground
(2) entangling ground
(3) temporizing ground
(4) narrow passes
(5) precipitous heights
(6) positions at a great distance from the enemy.

"Terrain. Which I am sure you are all dreadfully sick of hearing me talk about," Ghanima announced as soon as the last student was seated. "However, if you do not know where or how you stand, in any battle, you will lose. I cannot stress this enough. It doesn't matter if you're facing a troop of Sardaukar on Salusa Secundus, or trying to make dinner plans with a cranky significant other. If you cannot understand the terrain under your feet, you will find yourself on the wrong end of a metaphorical or physical blade."

"This all goes back to what we discussed that first week of class, "'Hence the saying: If you know the enemy and know yourself, your victory will not stand in doubt.' To know your soldiers, you must know yourself. You must be able to assess both the capabilities of your fighting force, and your own ability to command them in terrain before you. If you cannot give the soldiers what they need, even the most elite squad in the Empire can fall against a small handful of women and children." Not that Ghanima would know. At all.

"First, however, I want to hear how you did over the last week."

"Hope you all had a good holiday." Daria hadn't. "I also hope you finished your assignment because you're not getting extra time this time, so pass those up. This week, you're going to get a little personal. The old adage is to write what you know, so I want you to write about something personal. It can be wish fulfillment, it can be a day in the life, it could be about a problem you have. And you don't have to make yourself the main character. You can change any details you want, change your main character until it doesn't resemble you at all. Just basebit from your reality, and keep it between three to five pages."

"Right," Anakin said, "it's almost December, which means that the island will soon be forcing us to bathe in eggnog and wear stupid hats, so before that starts, let's have a quick discussion about ethics in holiday shopping, and in general dealing with your fellow living beings under rather stressful situations. And why it's still not okay to take a parking space when you see me waiting there with my blinker on."

Anakin had had a tough weekend.

"Today's lesson is simple," Obi-Wan said, straight-faced and dry-voiced. "This is Anakin. Do not be Anakin."

Anakin shot him a sour look, then reached out to poke him in the side. "I've gotten much better."

...that was not an endorsement, really.

"Don't be rude. Don't turn it into a competition. If you cannot get the item that you wished for, buy something else. Do not start a fist fight."

Ahem.

"Don't get into a fight with the Mall Santa about how his sleigh doesn't obey basic rules of aerodynamics," Anakin added in an undertone. "Right. We're in the Danger Shop, so we've set each of these scenarios up as live-action demonstrations in patience. If you do everything well, you are rewarded with a overly expensive coffee drink of your choice."

"Or a soft drink, if you prefer," Obi-Wan added gently. "Good luck."

Once everyone had gotten to the Danger Shop, they'd find themselves in what looked like a security room in a bank. There were screens and computers everywhere, and plenty of places for them all to sit. There were bonuses to small classes.

"We've done plenty with trying to get into things so far," Kitty began, "but today you're going to try and prevent that. You're working security for this bank. The Danger Shop's been programmed to act as hackers breaking into the bank's systems and steal all the money electronically. Your job is to stop them. I'll give you a few minutes to familiarize yourselves with the system, and then it's going to start, so hopefully that few minutes is enough. Better get started..."
