There was no historically inaccurate movie for the kids to watch this week. Or maybe it was accurate. You don't know what Lincoln did or didn't do. He was an enigma.

Just kidding, there are a million biographies on the man.

Today we'll be trying to set the record straight about Lincoln. )

"You got a taste of different weapons last time," Atton said.

He waved at their environment. They were standing in a large grassy plain, with bushes here and there, and in the distance, moving targets. "Now, we're going to go into them a little more. First up: rifles." He held up a large sniper rifle. (Not as good as a blaster rifle, but it'd do.)

"Taking a good shot takes time," he said. "You need to be steady. Take a moment. Take three, actually: three breaths. On your third exhale, you're going to be your steadiest. That's when you take your shot. Take your time with everything, including releasing the trigger when you've fired. It's a rifle, treat it with care."

He held up the rifle again. "This," he said, "Is long-range. That means you have to keep in mind the wind and other environmental issues that can throw off your shot. Lots of wind coming in from the east? Adjust in that direction. But the wind at two-thirds to your target is the one that can do the most damage throwing off your shot, so if there's a difference between you and the target, adjust for that, too."

He put the rifle down.

"Same safety rules apply as with the pistol, by the way."

In case anyone had been wondering.

"The best shots are taken if you've got something to rest your rifle on to keep it steady. Otherwise, at least laying down or kneeling on the ground will give you some steadiness. Don't fire a shot while standing unless you absolutely can't help it. Put the butt of the gun in the pocket of your shoulder. Check your scope, and check where your shot lands. If your first shot doesn't it, it might tell you how you have to adjust your scope."

Beat.

"Okay, that's it. Everyone grab a gun, find a position, and fire on those targets. I've sounded enough like a drill sergeant today, get to it."

There was grass growing in the library. Tip didn't know why, or how, or what for, or any of that, but she didn't much care. It was a lovely day for lying around on it behind the front desk. Bill would let her know if any patrons came in.
