There were no work tables in shop class today. Nor were there any of the usual standing power tools. Instead, there were three identical Honda Civics parked in the middle of the large room, surrounded by tire irons, jacks, assorted bottles of fluids, cables, and three big yellow boxes.

"Right," Eliot said. He was wearing a pair of grey coveralls and already had a line of grease on his cheekbone. "So we've covered some of the basics of wood and metal, and we'll keep switching off through the semester, so if you had fun with either of those, don't worry, we'll be getting back to 'em. Today we're going to do some basics in my personal favorite kind of shop: Auto Shop." He patted one of the Civics on the hood. "For those who might not be familiar: these are cars. Also called 'automobiles'. They're like carriages, only instead of being dragged around by horses or oxen or whatever you use in your world, they're powered internally by fire and gears. They go a lot faster and farther than your average animal and don't really need to sleep, so in my world, we're rather partial to them. This particular model is your basic, average car. Not a lot of frills and whistles, but functional and reliable. So long as you treat 'em right." He grinned a little evilly. "These three have not been treated right. None of them will run. It's up to you all to work out why and get 'em mobile again."

He opened the garage door on the end of the room, the one that had last week opened onto a junkyard. Today, it revealed an oval test track, just down a small hill from the garage.

"Your job is to start the car and get it moving well enough to do a full loop around the track without breaking down again. Now there's three cars and more'n three of you all, so I'd suggest getting together in teams. Preferably ones where at least one of ya knows how to drive, but hell, this place is full of safeties. If you run yourself into a tree, it's probably not gonna hurt."

He wouldn't actually let anyone run themselves into a tree. If Hyacinthe, for example, were to get behind the wheel, he'd be getting at least a quick lecture on how the steering and brakes work before Eliot would let him drive off.

"Each car's got its manual in the glove compartment." Eliot showed the students were the manual sat in the compartment. "And all the tools you need to at least get the car to a proper mechanic are in this garage. So let's see what you all can do, yeah?"

There were no animals at all in the Danger Shop today, there was however what looked an awful lot like martial arts ring with a table with three judges alongside. Inside the ring stood a fairly tall and muscular woman.

"Good afternoon," Bond greeted them. "Today you'll be taking part in Aggressive Arguments, wherein you present a persuasive argumentative speech on the topic of your choice while Svetlana here engages with both your arguments and in combat. The judges will give you points for style, clarity, and how vigorously you defend your points and your self."

"Hello, class!" Cecil beamed at them all. "Now that we've covered a few of the immediate things, we thought we'd go back to some of the basics. Like...classes! You've all got classes, right? Otherwise you're really in the wrong place, because - well, this is a class. So, how are your classes? Like, were you home-schooled before and you have a small family, so you've never been in a group like this? Or are you more used to having normal classes like Geology, Marksmanship, and Modified Sumerian?"

"Oh, hey, I learned marksmanship too," Kanan mused. "I mean, I learned it from a Kalleran scoundrel who tried to sell me on more than one occasion, but... important life skills."

That was much easier to discuss than his education at the temple, which he wasn't going to touch on for the life of him, thanks.

"But there, that's another possibility," he added. "No formal classes at all, but practical lessons, possibly apprenticeships or internships, meant to give you hands-on experience instead of stuffing a book in your hands and telling you to read three chapters before the next lesson."

"Not that reading isn't important," Cecil said gravely. "It's just highly dangerous and best taught in a controlled environment."

Kanan side-eyed Cecil for a moment.

...

You do you, Cecil. You do you.

"Anyway," he said, shaking out of that moment and crossing his arms in front of his chest, "school here. Probably different from what you're used to back home. Let's talk about how, and what you're doing here to adjust to that change."

//Is it another week already? Then should I give you another improv game to keep you occupied today?// Jono gave the class a little nod once they had assembled in the Danger Shop. //What should I dredge up for you this week...?//

He paced back and forth thoughtfully.

//Should I get you all to play that game where you can only communicate in questions? Is the goal of that one straightforward enough?//

He certainly hoped so, because at the rate he was going, he was going to have a hell of a time explaining how Only Questions was played if he was only asking questions himself.

//Would playing out a scene using questions instead of any statements at all be difficult, do you suppose?// He shrugged his shoulders a little. //Would you be more comfortable playing this game in groups of two, or more? And would you like to choose your own topic to ask questions about? Once you've grouped off and chosen what topic to have an inquisitive conversation about, who wants to go first?//

... For the love of the improv gods and all that was theatrical, Jono really hoped he wasn't going to have to try to pull that lecture off again. It wasn't even all that difficult. He just really missed statements.
