"Yes, And:" Improv Theatre and You, Wednesday, Period One

//Is it another week already? Then should I give you another improv game to keep you occupied today?// Jono gave the class a little nod once they had assembled in the Danger Shop. //What should I dredge up for you this week...?//

He paced back and forth thoughtfully.

//Should I get you all to play that game where you can only communicate in questions? Is the goal of that one straightforward enough?//

He certainly hoped so, because at the rate he was going, he was going to have a hell of a time explaining how Only Questions was played if he was only asking questions himself.

//Would playing out a scene using questions instead of any statements at all be difficult, do you suppose?// He shrugged his shoulders a little. //Would you be more comfortable playing this game in groups of two, or more? And would you like to choose your own topic to ask questions about? Once you've grouped off and chosen what topic to have an inquisitive conversation about, who wants to go first?//

... For the love of the improv gods and all that was theatrical, Jono really hoped he wasn't going to have to try to pull that lecture off again. It wasn't even all that difficult. He just really missed statements.

Pair off or group off, pick a topic for your scene today, and then play it out using only questions. No statements. At all. I'm abusing them here because the lecture broke my brain a little.

Had Jalian understood? She thought perhaps, but it was hard to be sure. So she was just standing here waiting for someone.

Questioningly.

Shiemi took a deep breath and approached the other girl, smiling.

"Are you waiting for someone in particular?"

Jalian eyed Shiemi, hoping she had this right. "Why do you ask?"

Ahhhhh! So pretty! Shiemi just gazed at the other girl for a moment, then shook herself and smiled friendly

"Ano?" Um. Answer as a question... "Because you looked like you might be? Can we talk for a bit, then?"

"What would you like to talk about?" Jalian asked. "Isn't that what we're supposed to decide first?"

If she'd understood Jono properly.

Ah! "We didn't do that, did we?" Shiemi smiled and tried to think of a topic. "Have you done this before?"

Jalian hesitated, thinking. "Do I seem like I have? Is this a common game where you're from?"

"In Japan?" Shiemi shook her head. "Isn't this an American school? Doesn't that mean the game is American?"

"But if the teacher isn't, does that mean the game is from his home?" Jalian asked.

OH! "He's isn't, is he?" Shiemi blinked as she thought about that. "Is he from England?"

"Have you asked him?" Jalian hedged.

"Can we ask questions like that? It's not rude?"

Jalian stared a bit blankly. "Why would it be rude?"

Any questions?

Poor Shiemi?

Shiemi was trying to find a place to put the bunch of flowers she'd brought to class, but she was here?

Jono couldn't help but blink over at Shiemi once he realized that she was having problems, there.

//You brought flowers?//

They were lovely! They were also rather unexpected. If he'd known that she was going to bring some along, he would have brought a vase or something.

Shiemi beamed at him and nodded. "Aren't they beautiful? They're from the garden I found."

...

"Ah, I mean, did you know there was a garden at the school?"

Aw, Shiemi. You were making him proud. Jono gave her a little sort-of-a-smile around the corners of his eyes, and he nodded.

//Is that the one with the pillow trees? How's it doing these days?// And then, after a moment's pause, he added, //Would you like me to try to find something to put those in?//

"They're really pillows?!" Shiemi blinked in awe. She was going to need cuttings, now. "At first I wondered if someone owned the garden, you know? But don't you think a person who owned a garden would tend to it, weeding and such?"

She held out the flowers. "Is there a vase?"

Jono took the flowers and looked them over, thoughtfully.

//Do you suppose the person who used to tend to the garden has moved on, then? Don't students grow and leave, after all?//

Hell, he knew who used to tend the garden back in his own student days. He hadn't seen Ino in quite some time.

//Is anything this room fabricates actually real?// He shook his head a little bit. //Would you be so kind as to watch the class while I try to find something to put these in? Or do you think they'll last at least to the end of the class?//

"Oh, it was a student's garden?" Shiemi pondered that a moment. "It's still sad, then, but don't you think that's better than someone just forgetting about it?"

"But why would you leave? Since I'm the assistant, isn't it my responsibility to get things?"

//Wouldn't it make the most sense, for a garden on the dorm grounds to belong to the students?// Jono shrugged his shoulders. //Should I leave you to find a vase, then? Would you rather do it, even knowing I don't mind?//

You were his assistant, Shiemi, but Jono was fairly self-reliant when he had a mind to be.

"If there are students that garden, why did no one come to help the other day?" Shiemi asked, curious. Maybe... Maybe she could start a garden club?

...

Maybe she could get her roommate to start one and Shiemi could join it...

To answer Sensei's other questions in the proper format, Shiemi had to think a bit. "I want to help, but if Sensei wants to leave for a few minutes, I will gladly watch the class?"

Did that work?

//Was that a question?// Jono couldn't help but give her another smile, looking gently amused. //Don't you suppose inflecting a statement to sound like a question is cheating a little? Instead could you have tried something more like, 'Would sensei like me to watch the class for a few minutes, since I want to help?'//

Though he acknowledged that it was difficult to phrase statements into questions off the top of her head, and he shrugged his shoulders and winked at her.

//And did you tell anybody that you would be gardening? Did anybody have any way of knowing that coming to help you would have been an option?//

//Now, would that be fair? What good would it do for me to punish you for an honest mistake? And how were you to know, if I didn't strictly say not to use statements as questions before? Couldn't we say that this one is mostly on me for not clarifying, anyway?//

"I... I don't know?" Shiemi was relieved. Her mother had been so proud when she'd told her she was helping in class!

Actually she'd been proud Shiemi was attending class.

"Can't you do want you want with your own class? Isn't Sensei sensei?"
