"Welcome back," Eliot said at the top of class, which met once again in the warehouse simulation in the danger shop they'd been in last week. "Today we're going to use some power tools, so everyone make sure you've got protective eyewear and any hair or loose clothing is secured. We're starting nice and simple with an earth shop class staple: birdhouses. But first, let me show you the tools you're gonna be using."

He grabbed some pieces of wood, adjusted his goggles, and led the class over to demonstrate the bandsaw, the belt sander, the drill press, and the miter saw. "Those are all for shaping and finishing your wood," he said. "For piecing it together, you're gonna go a little more old school, using either wood glue, or hammer and nails." He demonstrated both these methods, including how to clamp the wood to hold it in place while working with it. "The wood glue's gonna get you a nicer finish in the end if you use it right, but I ain't gonna blame anyone who wants to hammer out some frustrations as well as the nails. Now, let's get to the project."

Eliot tapped the bulletin board behind him, and a diagram of various birds appeared on it. "Just in case anyone ain't familiar with what birds are, or the various sizes they come in. They fly, some folks like to watch them, and you can make houses for them to live in." He tapped the board and a basic bird house plan appeared. "Here's a simple plan. It's basically a box with a hole in one side for the bird to go in and out of, and a perch for it to hang out on when it's feelin' neighborly." That was a joke, though Eliot couldn't guarantee the birds in Fandom didn't have their own stoop culture. "Basic construction will get you a basic grade. I encourage you all to think outside the box, as it were, and get creative; paint it, shape it a little different, size it up or down. Show me what you can come up with, and have fun with it. Even if a bird doesn't end up likin' it, you want to end up with somethin' you can be proud of."

Bond's class was in the Danger Shop this week, a wide grassy sports field, with a set of goals at one end that looked suspiciously like old-fashioned bee hives and a patch of brightly coloured flowers at the other from which a faint buzzing could be heard. Each student had also been handed what looked like an unholy cross between a badminton racquet and butterfly net, a set of white coveralls and glovers, and a netted hat.

"Good afternoon," Bond greeted them. "Today you'll be trying your hand at the old and obscure art of Bee-Twatting, wherein you must herd a swarm of specially trained bees from the flower end of the field to the hive end in the manner of apiarists of old. Points are deducted for squished bees, so use a light hand with your gear." Yes, he did manage to deliver that with a straight face.

"Welcome back, everybody!" Cecil said, smiling. "I hope everybody had a chance to settle in, get used to their room and maybe roommate, and just figure things out. It can be really different, getting used to strange things where you actually live, so we thought we'd start there this week!"

"For example, I've never lived with a pet around, before," Kanan said leaning back against the desk and shrugging his shoulders. And maybe eyeing Cecil. A bit. "Now I'm living with at least two. Jury's still out on whether or not Cecil counts."

That was teasing. Honest.

Cecil rolled his eyes. "I am not a pet. You were for a week there, and really, you were so cute! But mostly roommates don't count."

"Mostly," Kanan allowed, smirking. "But there are other things to get used to, too. Me, I'm used to sharing rooms, mostly in flophouses, places like that. But having a place more or less of my own is strange. Maybe that's why I don't mind having Cecil around so much."

"And I'm used to having...well, mostly my own place, so having a roommate's a bit of an adjustment, even if Kanan's super easy to room with," Cecil said. As in, he'd given up his bed.

"But there are all kinds of things you might not be used to!" he continued. "Like, when I was a student here, I was totally shocked at the lack of proper bloodstone circles in the common room, and there's not even a faceless old lady that secretly lives in the dorms! Weird, right?"

Sometimes, the looks that Kanan gave to the back of Cecil's head while he lectured were more than just a little gobsmacked. Maybe someday he'd get used to it.

Just not today.

"I mostly just have to get used to having refreshers that aren't falling apart, and a half decent kitchen. I haven't seen the dorms setup, so I really can't comment on that one, myself. But I'm sure there's plenty for all of you to adjust to, so far as that goes."

"So tell us!" Cecil said. "What sorts of things have you found weird getting used to in just living here? What can we explain that you don't know about them? How is it going so far?"

'Let's hear about dorms life," Kanan agreed, "and if you've found any tricks for adapting to them, go on, share with the class."
