Sex Ed, Tuesday, First Period

"Okay, so I don't know how much Sex Ed you guys got in your home universes," Vanessa admitted, "so I thought we would start with the basics: how babies get made. Spoiler alert: it's sex." She pushed a button and diagrams of the male and female reproductive systems were projected onto the board behind her. "When a biological male and biological female have the form of sexual intercourse where the penis is inserted into the vagina, and the man ejaculates, if the woman is in the fertile period of her menstrual cycle, fertilization can occur, and therefore pregnancy. How this works is that a sperm cell from the male combines with an egg cell from the female, resulting in a new cell that will divide into more cells, which will, if the process is allowed to continue, eventually become a baby that has half the traits of each parent. If you need me to define any of those terms for you, please do ask. By the way, the pull-out method is not very reliable, as small amounts of semen can be released before orgasm. But it's better than nothing, so if that's what your home universe has, then when in your home universe, that's what you gotta do.

"A few things I want everyone to know, and again, you may already know this and think I'm so dumb for wanting to tell you, but it may be helpful information to someone, so bear with me: human biological sex is determined by two chromosomes, which are a part of the basic building blocks of cells which determine all of our traits. These chromosomes are known as X and Y. Females have XX chromosomes, while males have XY. Each reproductive cell, the egg and the sperm, have one chromosome. The egg will always be X. The sperm will be either X or Y. This means, ladies, that if your future husband tells you it's your fault you 'can't give him a son,' it's bullshit. That's on him. Furthermore, infertility has many causes, including low sperm count, so that's never all your fault either.

"While we're talking about the science behind makin' babies, let's also talk about the rhythm method. This is where you track your cycle, and only have sex when you're not fertile--or, if you're trying to get pregnant, when you are fertile. We have apps for that now, even! But again, not one hundred percent effective--you can even get pregnant on your period--but better than nothing. We do have better methods here, though, and I'll get to them next week. In the meantime, uh, if you're planning on having sex in the next week please see me after class if you don't know how to use a condom.

"So, now that I've hit you with some science, I'm interested to hear what you knew about how babies get made before this class." She was going to owe Wade a drink if no one thought it was the stork.
