The classroom was set up for creativity today. The chairs had been arranged around a large table piled with all kinds of magazines, scrapbooking materials and other art supplies and iPads ready to use, and a mix of music they'd talked about in class -- from Bowie to New Kids on the Block -- played in the background.

"We've talked about a lot of subcultures the last couple months, which gives you guys a good foundation for your final assignment," she said. "Over the next few weeks, you're each going to make up your own subculture. Think about something that you feel could unite people the way the subcultures we've discussed does, and create a culture around that. You want to look at what people in the subculture would wear and listen to and do for fun, what their ideals would be, even what they'd fight about.

"You can explain the culture however you want -- an essay, a class presentation, a collage, whatever makes the most sense to you. It doesn't have to be a culture that could exist on earth, either. The stuff on the table today is just to get you started. And if you find yourself doing the same kind of thing as somebody else in class, feel free to pair up and do something twice as good. Does anybody have any questions before we get started?"

When the class met up, it was in an impressively huge gothic cathedral inside the Danger Shop. It was covered in candles; sunlight broke in through a large gap in the ceiling.

Atton was sitting on the steps, looking irritated. "Today's lesson was supposed to be about self-care on the job," he said, "But the Danger Shop glitched up. I swear, it's like the thing got a bug in there or something, and I can't slice it out."

He waved a vague hand towards two sets of stairs behind the class, leading down into a complicated, interconnected web of bridges and tunnels. "So this sim comes with bad guys, and they're pretty hard to handle. I'm not going to ask you to fight them. But I also don't really have a lesson plan for today, so..." He shrugged. "I want you to go down into the tunnels, avoid or dodge the bad guys, and find somewhere quiet to relax for a few moments. See, the longer you keep going out on a mission, the more tired you're going to get, the less sharp you'll be. It's vital you hunker down and take a few moments to drink and eat, or even just take stock. But the environment won't always let you."

He pointed, helpfully, at a stack of shrink-wrapped sandwiches sitting in front of him. "Take one," he said, "Then go. Good luck."

"Good afternoon." Hannibal nodded to the students. "I hope those of you who spent the weekend as a different gender have had sufficient time to recuperate. This week, we move to discussing some of the parts of a meal that don't necessarily happen in the kitchen."

Class had been instructed to meet in the Danger Shop today, and the fact that Tahiri was wearing shoes might be an early hint as to what she and Ghanima had planned for the day. More accurately, she was clad in full Tusken garb, complete with gaderffi stick. The headgear covered up her discomfort about the shoes, anyway.

Also, there was the fact that students would find themselves standing in a desert.

All the sand. So much sand. So much. Also, fire. )
