Cara's class was once more in the Danger Shop, though it resembled the stables near the dorms rather than a movie theatre. Stables that unlike the current real thing were filled with horses.

"So, sometimes the things you need to hit are not very close to you, and while you could try walking, that often takes too long." And it got boring quickly. Trust her on this. "Which is where horses come in, as they require less time and effort than walking. Provided you're not an idiot about it."

Brian had had other plans for today, but then he had remembered what today was. And so, when the students arrived in the Danger Shop, they would find their magnificent rides waiting for them. It had a blistering top speed of five miles per hour!

"Hey, guys," Brian said. "Today's ride is pretty simple. One pedal, push it to accelerate, let up to brake, and steering. That's about it. Your course is handwavily marked out for you. Try not to do too much bumper-car-ing." Meaning he was anticipating at least some. "Ready, set, to your vehicles and GO!"

"We got into this a little last week," Steve said with a small nod at Raven if she was there, "but this week we'll talk about the 1950s and the Cold War."

After going into some detail about how the Korean War began as a civil war and spun into a proxy war, Steve smiled a little wryly. "I really don't want this class to just be a rehashing of every war the United States has been involved in, so let's talk about other things that happened in the 1950s, too. The polio vaccine was introduced, which would have been huge: I knew people in my neighborhood with polio. The space race began with Sputnik in 1957--we'll get more into space next week. Comics were considered the gateway drug to juvenile delinquency, unions reached their peak in strength, millions of men and women returned from the front and set up households and had an absolute ton of children...what else am I missing?"

He turned to the class. "What do you think was a lasting legacy of the 1950s?"

It was a quiet day in the library, the kind of day Lucille had expected to have when she first signed up for library duty. Since the books were usually unusually lively for being books, she wondered if she should be concerned, but decided against it. Having done the reshelving necessary, which ended up being very easy for once because of the books cooperating, she settled down behind the desk with a large atlas. It seemed like political boundaries had changed in some places since her time.
