"Welcome back," Didi said, from her usual desktop perch. "Sorry I couldn't make it last week, but I hear Atton did a good job."

"We're watching part of a movie called Justifying Your Existence today. It's about a guy who was so afraid of things his whole life that he never really lived, and now he's dead and he has to convince the people in Heaven that he did a good enough job to be allowed to move on."

She played a clip of the main character's trial, then turned the TV off.

"A lot of cultures believe in some kind of judgement after death, even if it normally doesn't come in a courtroom," she said. "If you're good, one thing happens. If you aren't good enough, something else happens. What do you think about the idea? And if you don't believe in something like this" -- she nodded to the TV -- "why do you think people might find it comforting?"

She paused, rubbing at her chin. "Or you could just tell me how awesome Meryl Streep is in the movie. That's always good."

Teamwork & Tactics, Friday, 3rd Period

It wasn't your regular teacher at the head of the class this time around. But don't worry, children! This one could do sadism in the name of sports as well as anybody.

"Hey class," Atton said. "Whatshishelmet Washington can't make it today, so you get me. Now I hear laps are traditional for this class, so go run some."

He bounced the ball in his hand onto the floor.

"After that, we play dodgeball."

Oh yeah.

Don't Be Stupid, Friday, 1st Period

The class was back in the Danger Shop again this week, though was set to the kitchen simulation instead of last week's fake Caritas. There was a stack of cookbooks on the desk up the front.

"Sometimes not being stupid isn't about the big things," Cara said. "Sometimes it's about the little things, like figuring out how to cook a meal without setting everything on fire so you don't starve to death. Or die in a fire." That would also be bad.

"So today you're all going to pick a recipe at random from one of those books and cook it, without bothering me for help." Sink or swim people. Also because her actually trying to help would likely end in tears.
