Philosophy of Loss, Friday, Period 2

"Welcome back," Didi said, from her usual desktop perch. "Sorry I couldn't make it last week, but I hear Atton did a good job."

"We're watching part of a movie called Justifying Your Existence today. It's about a guy who was so afraid of things his whole life that he never really lived, and now he's dead and he has to convince the people in Heaven that he did a good enough job to be allowed to move on."

She played a clip of the main character's trial, then turned the TV off.

"A lot of cultures believe in some kind of judgement after death, even if it normally doesn't come in a courtroom," she said. "If you're good, one thing happens. If you aren't good enough, something else happens. What do you think about the idea? And if you don't believe in something like this" -- she nodded to the TV -- "why do you think people might find it comforting?"

She paused, rubbing at her chin. "Or you could just tell me how awesome Meryl Streep is in the movie. That's always good."

Come in, get settled, watch the movie.

Do you believe in judgement after death? Regardless of your personal beliefs, why do you think other people might?

Also the place to gush about the movie, if you've seen it.

"I'll buy that it happens, but I don't see why I'd let that stop me from going wherever I want if I ever die," Frank decided.

"So you think you're going to get to choose?" Didi asked, face betraying no particular personal knowledge on the question. "Interesting. How do you figure?"

"I expect that by the time I've moved on, I'll be well-known enough in the supernatural realms that spiritual beings will either owe me a favor or not want to see my face for all eternity. Add a dash of a natural, casual disregard for rules I'm not particularly enamored by," Frank said while stirring his drink, "and no particular religious affiliation holding me down to any set of rules in the first place, and you get a spirit with an especially strong sense of self who should avoid the coin sorter at the outset."

Who knows, but isn't telling.

"What's to defend?" Kaylin asked dryly. "I already know I'm not good enough to end up anywhere good. Even if I believed in that."

"If you don't believe in it, it's not worth worrying about," Didi said reasonably. "I don't think really bad people think they're bad, but I'm not going to argue with you about whether you're good or bad. That's your deal."

"Uh, Ms--I mean, umm, Didi?" It felt weird calling another teacher by her first name. Didi wasn't a friend, like Parker and Eliot, so being anything but formal didn't feel normal. "Do you have a minute?"

'I have a whole bunch of them," Didi said affably. "What's going on, Kathy?"

Kathy might not have felt like se was a friend, but she spoke to her as though she was one anyhow. Of course, she talked to everybody that way.

"I was wondering if you were still looking for a TA," Kathy asked. "I'm not one this semester and I feel almost like I'm at loose ends. And it makes more sense to have someone here cover a class if you need it than asking Mr. Rand to do it again."

"That would be fantastic," Didi said, sincere. "Not that getting Atton to cover was hard, but you know more about what we're covering. If you really want to do it, I'd love to have you."

"Oh, I'm sure he didn't mind at all," Kathy agreed, not wanting Didi to think otherwise even for a second. "But--yeah, exactly what you said. I'm here, I know the material, I can lead discussion if you'd like...all of that stuff."

She offered Didi a shy smile. "I just don't want to lose TA lounge privileges," she joked.

"Well, the TA lounge is a pretty awesome spot," Didi teased. "But thanks. I'd let you know if I ever knew I was going to miss, and if I just didn't show up, you have my permission to pick a movie, or take everybody on a walk to the cemetery, or whatever."

"Cool!" Kathy said, immediately intrigued by the idea of visiting the cemetery. "Umm, do I have any other duties? I've gotten coffee and stuff for people before. It's no trouble for me to pop down to town if you want or whatever."

"Make it Earl Gray with milk and you have a deal," Didi told her. "If you want to, I mean. Don't feel like you have to."

"Deal," Kathy said, beaming. "Thanks for this, M--Didi."

Meryl Streep is a goddess, pass it on.
