[Week #6 - The High-wire Job]

Another Tuesday, another portal - this one to Virginia Beach, Virginia, and the Virginia Beach Adventure Park.

“I have been waiting all semester for this!” Parker was looking squeeful and other EE! words. “Ropes course! With ziplines and high wires and canopy walks!”

"The courses are rated on all different levels," Eliot said. "So those of us who aren't professionals when it comes to ropes and harnesses shouldn't have any trouble finding something fun to do, anyway." He didn't really anticipate any trouble with enthusiasm from this group. Honestly, he'd been feeling relatively extraneous all session. You know, when they weren't getting attacked by alots.

“You have to wear your protective gear. And listen to the safety presentation.” Parker snorted, then said under her breath, “My stuff is better.”

Eliot patted her reassuringly on the shoulder. "We know, darlin'. But your stuff ain't covered under the park's insurance."

“Just ask if you need help. Or ideas,” Parker added, grinning at them. “There aren’t any diamonds on this course, but you can’t have everything.”

Having informed his students to wear appropriate attire and take appropriate precautions against the sun, Bond led his class down to Galactica Point, where a box full of various kinds of digging and sports equipment waited for them.

"Good afternoon," Bond greeted them. "In pleasantly warm weather like we're having, one common form of relaxation is to head to the nearest body of water to cool off. If it also happens to come with a sandy beach, all the better for those who don't feel like heading into the water. You can indulge in taking advantage of either or both of those as the mood takes you."

He nodded towards the equipment box. "There are buckets and spades should you be in a constructive mood, as well as balls and the like if you're otherwise inclined."

"Right, so this weekend was probably a little awkward for some of you," Ben said, lounging against a table surrounded by all kinds of boxes, lumber, metal...and weirdly, clothing in various sizes. "So today I want you to make yourself an emergency kit for this sorts of weird weekends. Include clothing in various sizes, a note to yourself in case it's a weekend where everyone's lost their memories, an emergency phone--and instructions on how to use it--and any other supplies you might need."

He smiled. "I should warn you that while I've been here, I've been turned into a pony, fought carnivorous fish, and been small, a girl, really old, and an heir to a diamond mine, so there's a lot of ground to cover. After you've stocked your box and rigged it to your fingerprints--I'll handwavily show you how to do that part--prepare to give a small presentation about what you packed and why."

Jones had sent out a notice for everyone to meet in the art room today instead of the danger shop or the regular class room. When students arrived they would see workstations set up with slabs of wet clay and various clay implements.

"Today we are discussing the written language," Jones began as everyone took their seats. "Before the written language, most history and stories were told in an oral tradition. With the birth of thought and stories, eventually a system was created to recreate and replace the oral tradition which led to more accuracy and less changes to original story. Initially these languages were more symbols which translated directly into words. Eventually this would evolve into a system of letters and characters. Each culture would build upon the previous cultures language model until today's modern language. Even now these languages change with the advent of technology and social media. However that's another class."

She gestured to the slabs of clay in front of them. "One of the important historical discoveries on this world was the Rosetta stone. It was a stone inscribed with a decree issued at Memphis, Egypt, in 196 BC on behalf of King Ptolemy V. The decree appeared in three scripts: the upper text was Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, the middle portion Demotic script, and the lowest Ancient Greek. Because it presents essentially the same text in all three scripts, it provided the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs."

She then began to give out instructions and translation sheets. "Today you will be making your own form of a Rosetta stone. You will pick a phrase or quote in English or your native tongue and translate it into Sumerian and Egyptian hieroglyphs. I chose Sumerian as the script translation will be easier for you than demotic. Transcribe the phrases in each language onto the tablet. I will then have them placed in the kiln and returned to you next week. Please begin."
