When the students arrived for class, they would find the Danger Shop set up as an empty city street at night. Their teacher was waiting for them wearing a slightly rumpled suit with no tie. "Hey, guys!" he said once they were all assembled. "I'm Mr. O'Conner, and in this class we're going to learn through doing. Now, we could sit around talking about cars but by the time you got finished learning all the traffic signs this session would be over, and anyway, that’s boring. Who really cares about what a yield sign is for anyway?” Not Brian, that was for sure. He’d gotten pulled off traffic duty pretty fast.

"So, first things first." Brian clicked a button on the control, and a white Mitsubishi Eclipse appeared in the first lane of the street. Brian opened both doors so everyone could see in once they'd gathered around, and handwavily gave a quick rundown of gears, steeering, braking, and acceleration.

Once he'd finished that, Brian pushed another button and three more cars appeared lined up across the street: red, blue, and lime green. "“There’s no better way to learn anything than by doing it,” Brian declared, “so today you’re going to drive. Specifically, you’re going to run heats.” He pointed down the street. “The second stoplight is a quarter mile. When this light turns green, you go. First one past the second stoplight wins. We keep going until everyone has had a turn. It’s a straight shot, all you have to do is focus on keeping the car going forward and in a straight line. If you somehow manage to crash, you won't hurt anything, this is all a simulation. The program will repair your car immediately, but penalize you by taking you back to the starting line. Easy, right?” He thought so. If any of them turned out to need remedial training in how a car worked, well, he’d find that out soon enough. And owe Skywalker a beer. "We've got a prime number here, so we'll do...two heats of four and three of three, how's that sound?" He hoped it sounded good, because he hadn't been able to come up with a better way to divide by seventeen.

"Once you've run your heat, tell me your name and one thing you love about cars. Let's go!"

Hardison just wanted it on record that he loved this room, all right? He was willing to stay on Fandom island forever and always, amen, so long as they kept letting him come up and geek out over the Danger Shop. Going through some of the saved scenarios, he'd found the one that had correlated to the radio report he'd based the class off of, and with a few tweaks and changes, he'd had it set up to his exact specifications.

Perfect.

Welcome to Survival Horror 101 )

"So, I don't know y'all. I don't know how well any of you know one another. Some of you might be friends, some might be strangers, some of y'all might hate each other. Bit of free advice? I'd figure out a way to work together anyway, cause you are all y'all got. This class is all about stayin' alive for as long as you can, an' comin' up with ways to make that time last just a little longer. Figure out what you need to do and get to it, a'ight?"

There was another loud slam into the door from the outside and Hardison grinned. "Good luck."

Thanks to Monday's class, Cosette really was going to spend every spare minute of her shift today researching the history of windsurfing.

Or at least it started out that way, and then she started getting sidetracked by books on sailing in general. And Olympic aquatic sports. And -- it made sense how she'd gotten from one topic to the other, though she couldn't trace the steps back to exactly how -- the history of Easter Island.

She could end up forgetting to leave at the end of the day, at this rate, or at least she'd have amassed enough books on these various topics to build herself a small fort, and sleep in it.
