Evan was at least a little bit concerned about the machines that were popping up through the town, and the fact that nobody seemed to be doing anything about the fact that there was a machine selling guns in the lobby of the dorms. Who did he have to talk to about that? Even the Jean Grey School didn't condone weapons amongst the student body, after all.

But for now, he had a library shift to attend to, and he was going to spend it trying to be productive, pulling out books on things like self-defense and gun safety. If people were going to have easy, cheap access to weapons like those, he figured he could at least make certain they knew what they were doing so that they could keep them responsibly.

Some of the books were kind of powdery, though. There were some puffy balls of sugar that had decided that they wanted to help out. And if they wanted to be helpful, Evan was hardly going to turn them away.

Today the students were instructed to meet at the causeway, where once everyone showed up, they got to hop a portal to New York. It was really crowded on this street between the tourists and people who just wanted to get to work, so Kitty found a quieter area so she could talk to them.

PS: Sorry about the weather. Kitty brought umbrellas in case of rain.

"We've gotten ourselves to the 2000's now," she said. "And I don't think I really need to go into too much detail, since so many of the aftereffects of the decade are things we're still dealing with today. There's the rise of social media, the crash of the global economy, the election of the first black president, and you're never going to be able to talk about the 2000's without mentioning 9/11. We're not going to go into detail about it, though. But that is why I brought you here to the 9/11 memorial. And if you look up right over there, that's Freedom Tower, which was built in place of the buildings that were destroyed. Today I just want you guys to check out the memorial, or don't, if you don't feel okay doing it. Up to you."

During the morning, messages went out to the science class that they would be meeting in the Danger Shop today.

"As you may have noticed, there are now vending machines that dispense guns on the island. I am not your mayor, so I have no interest in them aside from having some confidence that you, students, can do better than these mass-produced weapons," Doom said.

"We are here in the Danger Shop instead of the normal lab in case I have overestimated you," Doom explained. "Here, you can work on crafting a weapon to match your personality and intended lethality without the threat of the weapon exploding and killing yourself and several classmates. That would be an inconvenience."

Doom then launched into a brief explanation of how energy weapons worked and how it was a joke that more Earths had not figured out how to use them widely and effectively yet.

"Whether your preference is projectile weaponry or melee, you will be able to use your consoles to generate the individual pieces you will need to assemble. The actual assembly will be up to you."

"Not that I should need to provide such a disclaimer at this point, but your designs can be saved for your own records while I will not view anything other than the final design. The weapons I create are far beyond anything you can imagine, so I have no need to copy your work."

"Now begin."
