Jaye didn't know why she always got classes on Monday when that meant she had to work on what should really be a three-day weekend, but at the same time, what Jaye did couldn't really be called 'work.' Still, she couldn't sleep in, so, meh.

"Today we're getting the meta for Con Air, a movie about Nicolas Cage on a flight full of convicts where they get control of the plane and everything goes bad. Basically you get to hang out here and watch a movie with a lot of explosions and then head out to get tan or barbecue or sleeping some more, all way more viable options for your Memorial Day than sitting here."

She paused. "You still have to stay here though. You showed up, that's your own fault."

"It's Memorial Day today," Ender said-- after everyone had gathered and he had taken stock of who was there and, more importantly, who wasn't. He'd noted said absence with a raise of his brow and nothing else.

It was a little hard to concentrate on that anyway with all the frogs hopping around, occasionally shedding literal light on the group.

"I suppose it makes sense to talk about loss," he said. "I know Memorial Day honors the men and women who have served us who have fallen in battle, but military service isn't the only service that a human being can commit themselves to. You sit here on a mountain of the dead - of people who worked and suffered and expired so that you can live here comfortably."

Having imparted this cheery wisdom, he sat back.

"So let's start there," he said. "Is there anyone in your life who's since passed whose service led you here today?"

Today they were meeting in a classroom once more, with desks arranged in a half-circle around two long tables.

The tables in the centre were piled high with pancakes. And crêpes. And Pfannkuchen. And pannenkoek. And raggmunk. And naleśniki. And really, any other version of a pancake-like food you could possibly imagine, along with a multitude of sweet and savoury toppings to go with them.

"The pancake," Thor said, "is a popular breakfast item found in many cultures throughout this world. Although most variations feature the same basic ingredients, details like the size and thickness of the pancake varies from region to region. It is not always a breakfast food, either. Some cultures serve a savoury version topped with foods such as meats and cheeses- as a dinner item."

Yes, that was just a lecture about pancakes.

The students were in a Danger Shop gym today, which aside from the circular mats set down and a weird lumpy mass of something, didn't give away what they might be doing today.

Good thing they had a teacher for that!

This week in Hitting Things, we're going to be... well, not exactly hitting each other.  More like you'll be smacking into each other and probably hitting the ground," Jaina said, picking up the lumpy mass.  "This is a sumo suit. Sumo wrestling originated in Japan, is an Olympic sport, and is a very real thing, but we're going to simplify it a lot for the sake of this class. You put the suit on.  You pair off with someone else.  You wrestle each other in these suits, and whoever is forced out of the ring or puts anything besides their feet on the mat loses.  Now, if there aren't any questions, who wants to go first?"

Once again, Bruce's classroom was arranged with clusters of desks throughout the room and a sparsely-stocked first-aid kit on every table. Unfortunately for everyone, the dummy from last week was back and sitting on Bruce's desk at the front of the room. The bandages from last week were gone, but it was about to become creepy all over again, because the theme of today's class was--
