"It's Memorial Day today," Ender said-- after everyone had gathered and he had taken stock of who was there and, more importantly, who wasn't. He'd noted said absence with a raise of his brow and nothing else.

It was a little hard to concentrate on that anyway with all the frogs hopping around, occasionally shedding literal light on the group.

"I suppose it makes sense to talk about loss," he said. "I know Memorial Day honors the men and women who have served us who have fallen in battle, but military service isn't the only service that a human being can commit themselves to. You sit here on a mountain of the dead - of people who worked and suffered and expired so that you can live here comfortably."

Having imparted this cheery wisdom, he sat back.

"So let's start there," he said. "Is there anyone in your life who's since passed whose service led you here today?"

Truthfully, Yeul enjoyed coming to class early just for the extra time spent lounging on the lawn.

Though she was easy to please in general so that probably was unsurprising...

Evan... wasn't going to speak up today in class if he could at all help it. There was one person that he'd lost who was directly responsible for him existing at all, and the things that X-Force did might be considered service, and it was all far too raw for him to want to talk about in front of the class. He could be vague about a lot of things, but Uncle Cluster... not so much.

So he kept his head down and his eyes on the ground and just resolved to not think about it today. These sandwiches were great. Yep. Sandwiches.

Ender cast him a glance-- well, more than a glance. He studied Evan's expression for a few moments, then gave him a slight nod.

"The cheese ones are pretty good today," he said.

Yeul said nothing as she reached out to touch his arm gently. Giving, she hoped, some small bit of comfort.

"What about yourself, Professor Wiggin?" Yeul asked curiously. "Have you anything to talk about today?"

"I've known my fair share of military men and women, but my stories are terribly boring," Ender lied demurred. "They went out and fought for what they believed in, then they came back home safe and sound."

"Actually, I was curious about how and if someone should try to balance life in Fandom and in their own world," Emily said, remembering her conversation with Natalie. "I understand people become, in a way, natives and decide to stay, and others come and go without sticking to a single place. But seeing how even time seems to flow differently...it's a bit odd."

"I suppose it is, but humans are highly adaptable," Ender pointed out. "If they want to be."

Okay, Evan could do this. Talking was easy, right? You just open your mouth and let words happen. He'd been doing it for most of his life. Or... he remembered doing it for most of his life. That was almost the same thing.

"Professor Wiggin...?" He chewed his lip as he approached Ender after class. "You... said it would be okay to talk?"

Ender had just packed what remained of the sandwiches in his bag. He looked up at Evan as he came closer, giving the appearance of offering him his full attention.

"I did," he said, "And it still is, so you're in luck."

Only reason Cassidy's not here is due to the mum being sick.
