Today, the students had two separate sets of ingredients already set out for them.

"Good afternoon, class," Bond greeted them. "We're still in the realm of baking this week, but we'll be doing something that requires some multitasking this week, and instead of sweet, we'll be making something savoury. Something which everyone should make from scratch at least once, even if they order it every other time, pizza. Which for those of you who aren't from here or any other place where it's a popular dish, is a round flatbread topped with a tomato sauce and other ingredients, usually cheese, along with meats and vegetables, though usually it's better not to overload on toppings."

"Any any case, today we'll be making dough and sauce from scratch, then while those are resting and cooking respectively, you'll prep your chosen toppings so everything will be ready construct the actual pizza to go in the oven at the same time. You have enough ingredients to make three pizzas each so feel free to experiment a bit with those."

"Now, if you'll just watch me, let's begin."

Today's class was held in a disconcertingly empty space. We're talking fresh blank document empty. Not even any corners or possibly shadows empty. The only way you know there's a floor is because you're currently standing on it empty.

It was possible classes taught by Pinkie should come with vertigo warnings. And glitter warnings. And overly cheerful warnings.

Derek's warnings mostly involved the need to call the police for being creepy near teenagers, so. There was that too.

"Where there is light, there has to be dark," Jack remarked once the students were in their seats. "And if we begin by talking about angels, the next week we need to discuss demons. I’m devoting this week to definitions and classifications; next week we’ll discuss exorcism."

He paused to consider what a very cheerful topic that was before continuing.

"The word demon itself comes from a Greek root that merely indicates a divine power. Early man, though, was more interested in evil powers than in good ones, so there are many more myths about demons than about angels. Sometimes demons are seen as independent spirits, or as fallen angels. But in several belief systems, demons are associated with the spirits of the recently dead. Dr. Freud said that helped to show how much power the dead hold over the living."

"Medieval man blamed demons for everything that went wrong," he added. "If the milk curdled, if your horse ran away, if you had a headache, if your baby died in his sleep -- all of that was the work of demons. And even today, people in many parts of the world continue to believe in the possibility of demonic possession."

"The most common classification system for demons in my world was written by a priest named Alfonso de Spina in the 15th century," Jack said, bringing the list up on a slide.

"Demons of fate," he continued, "mean the demons who control destiny. Familiars are demons bound to a sorcerer and willed to do their bidding. A drude is a possessed witch who comes to sit on one's chest at night, in German beliefs. Sabbaths, in this context, means meetings for witches. Everything else should more or less explain itself."

"Your assignment for this week is to research a demon and write a few paragraphs describing it," he said. "Preferably one that can be accounted for in de Spina's classifications, but if there's another type you're burning to discuss I won't hold it against you. The" -- leather-bound and vaguely forboding -- "books are over there, or use computers if you'd prefer."

Sholeh had come into work today humming. Even Professor Priest's lecture on demons hadn't been able to shake her good mood. Her birthday had been wonderful, Po being out with Yeul had meant there was time for her sisters to come out and enjoy their brownies, and the book she'd borrowed to read had been an excellent choice. In short, nothing could ruin her excellent mood.

Or so she thought until she walked into the library and saw water sheeting down from the ceiling. Panicking, she yanked off her petticoats, trying to sop up the water before it ruined any of the books. A few seconds later, the waterfall stopped and Sholeh nearly went limp with relief when she saw that it had missed all of the nearby books.

She'd no more thought that than another downpour started, this time next to the circulation desk.

That set up the pattern for the afternoon. Water would start cascading from the ceiling, Sholeh would dash over and try to soak it up, it would stop, she'd relax for a bit, and then the flooding would start somewhere else.

At least the books were spared?
