For the last week of classes, the Danger Shop had been set up to look like a street in Tokyo. Small local businesses lined the narrow street, and the Tokyo Tower was just visible in the distance. Prof Tomoe stood in front of a noodle shop, eagerly waiting for the students to arrive. Kotetsu stood back a little, arms crossed and a concerned expression on his face.

“It’s been an interesting eight weeks of classes,” Prof Tomoe said, “and it’s been enjoyable having you all as students. For our final lesson, you’re going to face the hardest, deadliest force the universe can offer.” He threw his arms open wide. “Teenage girls with superpowers!”

He let out a long maniacal laugh. Kotetsu raised an eyebrow at the outburst. It took a full minute before Prof Tomoe calmed down enough to explain the rest of the lesson.

“For today’s class, I want you to go and fetch the Silver Crystal, which is waiting for you at the top of Tokyo Tower. However, it’s protected by one of five magical girls who will stop at nothing to keep you from getting your hands on it. In order to get the crystal and complete this task, you must defeat her. You may do that anyway you like.”

He held up a basket full of different coloured ribbons. “And here, have a present from us before you go.”

Cassie had finally decided to return to the library now that the nightmares about getting killed in there had started to ease up.

Of course, she would come back on a day where the books in the marine biology section seemed to be humming an awful dirge that she had heard on TV quite often.

She returned to the desk to check in books that had been returned and wondered if it would be frowned upon to cast a muffling spell over the books today.

The gremlins providing the ominous soundtrack for today's class quieted and began to disperse after one good glare from the teacher.

"Today," Tyrion said, once the group of students seemed to be assembled and the gremlins were blissfully silent, "For our last class, I'm going to ask you to make a choice. There are plenty of ... for want of a better word, gadgets that one can buy these days. Most of them don't do anything a computer or a high-end phone won't do" -- and he took a moment to reflect on the fact a year before he hadn't know what a phone was -- "but sometimes they're either less expensive or more practical to carry around."

He gestured to an array of three small metal-and-glass tablets laid on a table, then held them up one by one. "This is a camera. It takes pictures and records moving film of anything you might point it at. The thing next to it is called an eReader; it loads computer files of books, and you can read almost anything you'd like on it. The third is called an MP3 player, and it holds songs. I bought this one used, and it has about 3,000 on it. Most of them sound like complete noise to me, but perhaps not to you."

He briefly showed how each device was turned on and off, and the fundamentals of their use. "The rest of the class is for you to play with them," he finished. "I'd also like to know which of them you'd pick if you could only have one, and why that is."

"And ignore our guests," he added, with another glare to the last gremlin lingering in the corner. "They aren't biting today, just humming."

"So in a normal class," Ronan said, "this would be where we have the exam -- but this is just a summer workshop, so I'm not going to be that cruel. Instead, you get to test me!

"Ask me anything." He paused. "Anything about sex, gender, or other topics relevant to the course material. If I don't know the answer, you win a prize."

He grinned, leaned back in his chair, and waved at the class. "Whenever you're ready!"

Today, class was meeting in the Danger Shop. It looked exactly like the normal classroom, except that there was a large wardrobe standing near Callie's desk. It was locked shut, for the moment. Oh, and there were a number of mats in the center of the room, as well, and a clear space left around them.

"Our last class, and the last sin," Callie began. "It's Wrath. You know. Anger. Apparently you're supposed to stay docile while you're also refusing worldly possessions and not having sex. Sounds like a fun time. So if you want to oppose wrath, then you can stand in the center of the room and do yoga. Learn patience. Dull stuff like that."

She smiled, baring her teeth. "Or," she said, "you can let out your inner rage. Anybody up for that?"

She yanked the chest's doors open to reveal a cascade of weapons. Baseball bats, maces, flails, knives, swords, sledgehammers, a world of moddable delights. The only thing that seemed to be missing was projectile weapons, such as guns or crossbows. Sorry, today required getting hands-on.

"Everything in this room is breakable, if you hit it hard enough," she said brightly. "And we're in the Danger Shop so no one accidentally chops anyone else's finger off, and don't do it on purpose or you'll just piss me off. Leave the idiots doing meditation alone, and get breaking."

To illustrate her point, Callie walked over to her desk and pressed a finger to it. An instant later, it burst into flames.

Teaching was such a rewarding experience.
