Captain Hook's class met in the Danger Shop, though the setting was quite different this week. Instead of a ship, they were on a sandy beach, with beautiful crystal blue water lapping at the shore. The sand was fine and white, and inwards of shore was a tropical forest, filled with fauna and animal noises that made it sound like a veritable zoo.

Arrr, what be happening today? )

Hook didn't think of himself as evil, no. He was just... ethically challenged. And by George he'd enjoy the mayhem he subjected his students to this week.

"It's your lucky day," John said once everyone had filed in and taken their seats, "because I'm giving you an easy class. And this isn't even due to the Parent's Weekend events which I know will take a lot of your time and some of you are already probably freaking out. Nope, this was planned from the beginning so you can just continue to think of me as an awesome teacher who never gives you anything too hard to do. Make sure you put those on any evaluation forms they give you so I can get a raise."

John grinned and pushed away from his desk. "Today, we're going to be talking about comic books. Comic books, for those that might not know, is a magazine made up of comics, narrative artwork in the form of separate panels that represent individual scenes, often accompanied by dialog, usually in word balloons, as well as including brief descriptive prose. Basically, it's like a book with colorful pictures. That's a simple way to remember it even if they're not quite the same thing. Comic books can be funny, dramatic, explicit, or ridiculous just like our selection of books can be. They can also be one shots, where the story is contained in one issue or multi-part where the story weaves through several issues. Some of our most famous superheroes started out in comic books. They usually get a reputation as something a geek or a nerd would read but think about this: a geek or a nerd probably wrote a lot of those comic books and they're making bank now. Be nice to nerds, people."

John grinned, proud of himself for working that moral into the story. "Going over any notable plots and events in comic books would take way too long because there's so many of them. Like I said, some comic books are just as famous as some of our classic fiction. For today's lesson, you're gonna read comics. Yep, that's it."

John picked up a big box and opened the lid, revealing all sorts of comic books. "Come up here, find a comic, read it and that's it. I hope you like 'em. These were things I owned as a kid. No joking my selection."

Communications had been handwavily sent, but just in case they were missed, there was also a note on the door of the usual classroom, directing the students to meet in town at the Mystery Sign Theatre today.

Outside the building, the marquee read: Now Showing: The Petey Sci-Fi Talky Picture

In the lobby outside the auditorium proper, boxes of various supplies were laid out: newspapers, water pistols, party hats, noisemakers, dry rice, toast (someone should have mentioned that it was supposed to be unbuttered, because it...wasn't), small flashlights, rubber gloves, playing cards, bags of confetti, and tiny, incredibly cheap bells (you'd honestly be better off jangling your keys).

Inside the auditorium, there were... a lot of empty seats, and Baldrick at the back in an usher's uniform, not because he had the first clue how to be one, but because it was that or let him dress up in a corset and fishnets, and Edmund wanted to be able to keep his lunch down today. Also, because the usher's uniform was more appropriate for cleaning up afterward.

Edmund stood outside the doors to greet the students as they entered, and hand out an audience participation script. "Don't feel obliged to constrain yourselves to this in your commentary; in fact, there'll be extra credit for saying something cleverer than the thirty-five years of dimwits who came before you managed to come up with." No, there wouldn't.

[Open! Technically only for the DWI students, but if anyone else wants to wander in and watch, feel free.]

George was not grumpy. She didn't care enough to be grumpy. If you thought she was grumpy, you were just plain wrong.

"Who cares," she announced, loudly, and in response to nothing in particular. "Go visit with your fucking guests, since they're so special. Fuck off."

Someone wasn't getting any visitors this weekend. And was absolutely not grumpy about it. For those of you keeping score at home.
