Today, there were ropes hanging from the ceiling when the students entered the gym. Which wasn't a massive freaking clue as to what they were supposed to be doing at all. Really.

Except for how it was.

"Today we're gonna try an' test you're strength and determination," Guy told the class. Because determination got you a long way. Like, into a coma! Or another coma! Just go with it. "If you make it to the top of the rope, you get a gold star. If you don't even try you gotta do it all over again. Got it?"

He was a benevolent dictator.

"Get your butts in gear, poozers!"

Walter was feeling a bit testy. He had had a number of fascinating ideas for this week's class only to have them shot down on safety reason. Honestly, the parasite wasn't all that dangerous when Walter already had the treatment ready. It would have been educational for the students to see a very large example of why parasitism is so efficient that it evolves even in closed systems.

But no. No playing with parasites thanks to small-minded "safety" regulations.

Walter had decided to instead talk about one of his earlier role models. This week's lecture was about Nikola Tesla with a properly themed practicum. )

Gabrielle's morning had started off with a rather inauspicious blunder into her alcove's curtain, but so far things had gone uphill from there.

So far. But then she'd gotten distracted by an old and voluminous tome she meant to reshelve that happened to be about Hippocrates and the origins of modern medicine.

Let's just say that the bard scowling at a book behind the desk or occasionally walking through the stacks with her hands flung up in exasperation wasn't thrilled about things that she certainly seemed to think were missing from the account. The repeated muttering of things like "gross oversight" would back that statement up.

Once again, today's class was being held in the Danger Shop. The setup, for the time being, was fairly simple. It looked quite like a home office, with a computer and a phone, and, of course, two teachers waiting for the students once they filed in.

"Today," Algren said, looking over the class, "we're going to cover modern modes of transportation and methods of communication that you might encounter in your time as a student here. The current era is unique, when compared with other times throughout history, because technology now allows people to not only communicate with anybody around the world regardless of location, but also to drop by on their doorstep, should one have the time and the financial means to do so. Fandom takes it a step farther, utilizing the technological and magical advances of its citizens to allow people to communicate with people in different eras, galaxies, and universes as well."

"Today, we'll be talking about sketch comedy," Mitchell began. "Another brand of TV humor that's been around since time immemorial." He raised his eyebrows in amusement. "Perhaps the most famous of sketch comedy shows was meta for Monty Python. It aired in the late 1960s, early 1970s, and explored the boundaries of absurdism. Since, it's practically been implanted into many minds across the globe. 'And now for something completely different', anyone?" He rubbed at his hands. "Made up of a couple of friends straight out of Cambridge-- it's still hard to avoid John Cleese these days. Another big part of it was their completely random animation. The ensemble changed the field of comedy, especially on TV, for good."

"Sketch comedy is fairly simple. You've got a sketch - that's a short scene - and you sprinkle it with comedy. The genre hails from music hall and vaudeville, types of entertainment where they had to string a lot of tiny things together to form a program to entertain the unwashed masses. It found its way to radio, from which all things found their way to television. Sometimes, sketches happen once, then tail off into the next. Other times, you'll find a situation and characters from a sketch reused across the programme, or even the entire series. The main thing is that there's no long storyline to string them all together."

"Out in the States, you've got shows like Saturday Night Live who use sketch comedy to lampoon the news," he continued, "It doesn't all have to be absurd. A lot of it comes from improvisation, too - just a few people farting about in a room."

He grinned at the class. "Today is easy," he said, "We'll be watching some meta for Monty Python sketches, and then I'll be pairing you all off to make your own. You all get one word to work around, too. I'll be expecting to see these next week."

He jotted names on the whiteboard.

Bod - Delirium - Grass seeds
Robin - Chloe - Living legend
Kate - Layla - Epic showdown

"Now get to watching."

Today was a very exciting day in the outrageous world of home ec! Today was cooking!

It was the sort of class that made Aquaman grateful for the fact that he was teaching it. Not that he wanted to sound skeptical of his students skills, but he was glad this was all going to happen under the watchful eye of someone who could easily manipulate water to put out flames.

Kitchen Kapers! )

With that, Aquaman took up his mighty spatula again. "So pair up and bon apetit, ravenous little renegate! Let's eat!"

...hopefully.

The class had received notice to meet up at the school today.

"Good morn-ACHOO" An almighty sneezing fit interrupted Bond's greeting. "I'm afraid I seem to have come down with something, so instead of our planned class we'll be watching a movie about ocean life instead."

"Today," Anakin began, pointing his hand toward the simulator, "we fly one of the aircraft used by the militaries of this planet. It's called the F-16 and is adequate in air-to-air combat as well as air-to-surface attack, can go more than 850 kilometers before it needs to be refueled and can withstand up to nine G's--pretty high tech for this world's standards." Yes, Anakin was a total ship snob.

He opened the simulator door and gestured to the controls. "As you can see, it's configured differently than the systems we've been using in the last few weeks, but the joystick and the trigger button are fairly self-explanatory. You'll also be dealing with the Earth's gravity, so if you make the plane go up too quickly, the machine's been equipped to simulate G forces, so you'll pass out or throw up. If you throw up, you and Anemone will be cleaning that up," he added, "and she'll be cranky. Please don't make her cranky."

He clapped his hands together. "You may begin."
