Algren was standing at the front of the class today, eyeing Jim out of the corner of his eye, warily. They were tantalizingly close to the end of the semester, now. And it seemed as though they were getting on into material that had some sort of educational merit, and he couldn't for the life of him figure out if this was all too good to be true, or if he was smiling and nodding and going on with teaching what he could only suppose had to be fact.

Somebody hadn't gotten over the giant ear thing from last class, no.

"Today," he said, looking to the students, "we're going to continue on the topic that we had begun last week, discussing the sexual customs of other, nonhuman races." Races? Species? Algren had no clue, here. "We've arranged for this lesson to come from far more reliable sources than we-" Jim, "-could possibly provide simply from textbooks and notes."

Jim was perfectly knowledgeable! But when you had students who knew more...

You couldn't pass that up.

"So please be polite and courteous to your classmates and don't speak until they've finished with their speechs, alright?"

An elaborate rolled cake decorated like a log with wee meringue mushrooms and icing leaves decorating it sat on Colette's demonstration table at the front of class.

"Hello," she greeted the students, once she was certain everyone was in their seats. She was a little tanner than normal; she'd spent the weekend hunting for treasure in a rain forest (with much bigger boobs), and was trying to forget all about it.

"This is our last class before the final, and we are going to make a traditional Christmas dessert called a Bûche de Noël. It is a sponge cake, rolled with a buttercream frosting, and covered on the outside with a chocolate icing. The cake can be chocolate or yellow, with vanilla or chocolate icing on the inside, though the outside is always chocolate. As you can see, it is then decorated to look like a log. It is not very difficult to produce, and it seems quite impressive."

"The myth behind the creation of this cake is that Emperor Napoleon I made households in Paris keep their chimneys closed during the winter, based on the notion that cold air caused medical problems. This prevented Parisians from being able to use their fireplaces, so they could not celebrate Christmas with the hearth as they usually did. French bakers were clever, though! They invented this dessert as a symbolic replacement around which the family could gather to enjoy the holiday."

"We do not have time to bake the cakes today, but I am passing out a recipe, and you each have your own cake and icing, powdered sugar, and other things to decorate it with. Bring them home to share with your loved ones."

The whole island had apparently gone insane this weekend, and so Anemone had tucked herself away with a book, and simply not come out of her room. It was one of the perks of having a room to yourself.

Although if that music didn't quit turning itself on from somewhere in the AV section, she was going to get pissy.

The Fandom High Library was open. Sadly, it wasn't exactly a quiet zone today.

[The OCD ran away in fear of the severe winter storm warning.]

"And here we arrive at the end of it."

The class had met... )

His mouth tugged into the slightest of smiles. "One more film this week," he said, "A bit lighter than the last one, trust me. On Thursday at the theatre. Try to be there if you can. Bring friends."

Today Max was wearing an odd expression, sort of dopey, distracted grin, and he didn't seem to be paying nearly as much attention as he usually did. There was the by-now familiar pile of random gear awaiting the students. "You know the drill," Max waved vaguely. He sounded like he had other places he'd rather be today. While everyone grabbed whatever gear it was they planned on carrying for today's exercise, Max just stood there, staring dreamily off into space.

In fact, he was just going to stand there staring dreamily off into space until someone probably a TA reminded him that he still had a class to teach.

"Oh, right!" Max blinked rapidly, then shook his head like he was trying to clear it. The continued presence of the dopey grin suggested that he was, at best, only partially successful. "Let's go." Fortunately running around with squads of infantry was so second nature that Max could do it without thinking, so distractions didn't really matter. His lecture, however, definitely suffered for it.

"Today we're going to talk about..." he paused, frowning. "Um..." Another pause. He had notes on today's topic back in his office, and he'd even glanced over them (dreamily) before class, but he couldn't remember what they said now. Then inspiration struck! "Today," Max began again, "each of you is going to talk about what you've learned this semester. At least two things that you hadn't known or thought about before. You can also ask questions that haven't come up yet if you like."

Ha! That way he didn't have to know what was going on. Max told himself he'd try to pay attention and offer feedback and answer questions, but... he was very distracted. He wasn't even paying attention to where they were going.
