tyler_gone: (having a shy moment)

It was too early for popcorn, so Tyler had supplied coffee, donuts, breakfast burritos and french toast sticks to go with the movie in today's class.

"Hey," he said, as people took their seats facing a large screen. "It's a holiday that we don't get off, so I'm calling it a movie day. We're watching The Center because it pretty much has the worst physics this side of the Syfy channel. Take a second to read over the handout before you grab your food. Mocking this out loud is encouraged and may be given extra credit."

"And happy Labor Day."

Ghanima was sitting idly on her desk again as people filed in, completely absorbed in her book. But the moment that everyone was seated, she snapped to attention.

"Like the definition of religion, the construction of religious history is a task fraught with ideological implications," Ghanima said crisply, setting her text aside and getting up to wander between the desks. "Early studies of religions were often written to imply that the author's own religion was the most accurate. Even in a secular history, to imply that religion "progresses" towards better understanding of reality makes a value judgment about past religions; likewise, to consider religion an essentially social construction with no transcendent meaning denies the claims of every religious authority."

Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic. )

"Your activity for today is to take a religion that you are familiar with, and look at it with a critical eye. Who benefits from its laws? Who does not? How could you leverage it to your own advantage if you were stuck somewhere with no money and no allies? If you would like to pair up with a friend or two, please feel free, or you may work on your own."

"And the God of the TAs has struck. Mr. Bass, Miss Levine, congratulations."

Coming into the classroom, the students would find Minsc already there. The desks were still moved aside to make room for the much more comfortable pillows on the floor, and they would find their instructor and his hamster at the chalk board, meticulously and carefully finishing out a short list of things. He'd been there since before lunch, and was just finishing up in time for class. Shut up. Writing was hard. The fact that it was even legible spoke volumes for the effort Minsc had put into it.

There was also a large crate in the room, with holes, occasionally moving and emitting sounds, with a collection of protective hand gear and goggles nearby. That should bode well...

"Well!" said Minsc. "Let's go!"

It seemed some professor had thought this whole fake holiday thing stretched into him not needing to teach a class. When someone had pointed it out to him that no, he didn't get to stay home and marathon Dirty Jobs, Ronon had growled and complained and found something else that was marathoning to use as inspiration.

And so it came to be that the students entered a Danger Shop designed as a replica of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. There were, as always, doors near the entrance to the Danger Shop that led to the locker room where students would change into their uniforms for their event.

"Today's supposed to be a holiday, but the school doesn't seem to get that, so we're all stuck here. Goal for today is to get out as fast as possible. Training is something all of you should be doing, and in the movie Rocky the guy runs up the steps of this museum as part of his routine. Today, you're running up those same steps pumping your arms in the air like a tool. There's seventy-two steps if you wanna keep count." Ronon had counted just so there would be no surprises. "See how fast you can do it, race someone, it's up to you. But first, let's see this Italian Stallion guy do it."

A screen appeared behind the group and started playing the all-important if poor quality training scene for reference.

There was a music room! Who knew? Robin was distracted from the fact that only one person had signed up last he'd checked by the exploring of the room. What was with the giant cowbell?

"Okay so, since this is the first day, it's traditional to introduce ourselves. So, how about, Name, and what instrument you play."

Cal came in to open the library intent to work.

Not on actual library stuff, though, of course. He had a notebook that he'd gotten specifically for his attempt to be organized for the paper, now that he was editor, and planned to not only jot down some ideas and points for the first meeting this Friday, but to also start on a few articles himself, just so he had a bunch ready in case he wound up being lazy and forgot like he'd done so many times last year.

Good thing about the Editor's Note, he supposed, was that it pretty much gave him range to just talk about himself and what he thought, which shouldn't be too hard. For some reason, he rarely had a problem doing that around here.
doubleohblonde: (Bond is in the room)
[personal profile] doubleohblonde
As each student entered the class room, Bond tossed a small, plush toy to them. He also had a covered bowl on his desk, and a large closed box.

"Good afternoon, class," he said after the last student had their toy. "Next week we'll begin going over the act itself, but today we'll be discussing one of the more important subjects we'll look at in this class. Protection."

The day after a holiday and one can only hope that people aren't hungover from celebrating. Well, if they were American. And from a time period that Labor Day is celebrated.

Look, it was an excuse for a day off for a lot of people. That's good enough for a party most of the time.
