Coming into the classroom, the students would find Minsc already there. The desks were still moved aside to make room for the much more comfortable pillows on the floor, and they would find their instructor and his hamster at the chalk board, meticulously and carefully finishing out a short list of things. He'd been there since before lunch, and was just finishing up in time for class. Shut up. Writing was hard. The fact that it was even legible spoke volumes for the effort Minsc had put into it.

There was also a large crate in the room, with holes, occasionally moving and emitting sounds, with a collection of protective hand gear and goggles nearby. That should bode well...

"Welcome back!" Minsc turned around to greet his students with a smile, snapping what little remained of the chalk and throwing it over his shoulder. No reason. It was just fun. "I hope you all enjoyed tea with your voles! They make for very interesting conversationalists, don't they? It's no wonder the faeries, except for that special time of the year, enjoy sharing space with them!"

"Today, we are going to be talking about some general facts about faeries and their natures! On the board, as you can see, I have written a list of the most basic and fundamental facts about faeries! This list will tell you more about these creatures than I ever could, so I want you to look them over, write them down if you can, and then think about them all very carefully! Then, I would like you to pick which ones interest you the most. What do you find intriguing? What do you want to know more about? By the end of this class, I expect you to have known and experienced these details in full, but, for now, as we just begin to open the doors to the world of the fae, we shall take these baby steps and get to know our subject first!"

"When we are done discussing the nature of faeries, I would also like to share with you that this Wednesday, September the Ninth, is another grand faery holiday! Badger Scratching Day! Also known as Badger Vexing Day! So when we are finished with the brain stuff, grab some gloves and goggles and we will scratch some badgers! It is an activity that the faeries enjoy quite a lot,"--not so much the badgers-- "although, for the life of me, I actually couldn't tell you why..."

"Well!" said Minsc. "Let's go!"

A good time to take notes, ask questions, and stare warily at that box.

Zack wasn't staring warily at the box, so much as he was looking curiously at it from time to time.

So long as he didn't have to spank whatever was inside, he was totally fine with it! Really!

Lion-o was busily writing down everything on the board when he wasn't looking apprehensively at the box.

Which faerie facts do you find particularly intriguing? Which would you like to know more about? Which do you like just for the sake of liking it, or which are you a little uncertain or wary about? Look them over! Think about them! Spark discussions, and get to know them thick and thin!

"How can something be irrational and very wise at the same time?"

Look, it was eating at Zack. He was trying to piece it together, but every time he felt like he was getting close to grasping it, it slipped away from him entirely.

Possibly because he was still half distracted by the badgers.

"I think," Minsc offered after a very long time, "that what they mean is that to be rational is not always wise! Sometimes, it's the irrational that's the really wise thing to do!"

The theory gained excitement the longer Minsc explained it, realizing that he could be very good with a philosophy like that.

But it was philosophy, so that was about as deep as the answer was likely to get.

"You know... that actually kind of makes sense?"

Sort of like how the surprising thing to do also happened to be what people didn't expect. Except twisted about to make no sense at all in a way that Zack could totally get on board with.

"Do you think that could be used in battle, or something? If it looks crazy, then it would probably get you the upper hand, in most fights!"

"Ha!" To that question, Minsc couldn't help barking a laugh, a laugh that soon tumbled into a chuckle.

He shook his head.

"Crazy's been working for me for years! I say yes!"

"It sounds like fun!" No, Zack! Don't do it! "I like it! I'll have to try sometime!"

He was doooooooomed.

Morgana looked back and forth between her notes and the board. "They are resistant to all what?" she asked.

"Definitions," Minsc said, and frowned for a moment at Lady Morgana. "It says so right there; did I spell it wro--"

It was just at that moment that Minsc turned to the board and saw that he didn't spell it wrong; it just simply wasn't there! His eyes widened for a moment.

And then his fist went down on the nearest surface and the room shook just a little. "Gnoll spit, this is what I mean! Blasted faeries went and erased it on me!"

"Faeries are the inner nature of the land and a reflection of the inner nature of ourselves," K-Mart recited. "I'm not entirely sure what that means, but it sounds pretty."

Minsc couldn't help smiling at the girl's response. "Definitely," he said, "something to ponder, my lady! And maybe something that will become clearer the more we learn in class!"

Of course, everyone knows that badgers like to be tickled, not scratched. Thus why it is also known as Badger Vexing Day.

And thus why thick gloves and protective eye gear are provide. Feel free to mod your badgers!

If Zack had known that "Badger Scratching Day" was more or less a nicer, more politically correct way of saying "Badger Wrestling Day," he probably wouldn't have...

Actually, no, he would have come to class. And he would have grinned on the way, and then he would have been bouncing in his seat waiting for the opportunity to wrestle a badger into submission so that he could scratch it. They were scrappy and cute! Totally his speed!

For when they are present and accounted for and all pinged in!

Gwynn was here and looked very cheerful.

Lion-o was there, and he was wishing he'd brought his claw shield in case any of the badgers got out of hand.

Minsc, personally, loves badger scratching day, and has wrangled one in his arms to the point where it's submitted to the scratching, just waiting for it to be over.

And he'd love to hear any stories of vole tea, if you care to share!
