chosehumanity: (george-mitchell: did you hear this?)

"Today, we're going to be talking about people," Mitchell said, once they'd all filled into the classroom. Anyone paying attention may have noticed the large table full of bags upon bags of crisps off to the side of the room. "People watching television, to be precise." You know, in case they'd thought he was going to talk about something a little less savoury. "Academics call television the 'electronic hearth', because where families used to gather before the fireplace, they started to gather in front of the television instead. It grew very very quickly from being a novelty to being in every household, in every family."

He gestured at the television. "Others call it being couch potatoes," he said, wryly. "People who spend too much time in front of the television. They have a little food, have a little drink, and let the programmes flow on past. Wasting their lives away, never looking for some meaning in life, never bothering to find out who they really are, what the world's really like." He smiled once. "The truth, as it generally is, lies somewhere in the middle. Television nowadays is a unifier, it brings people together, but it also sets them apart."

He wandered over to the table, patting it with his hands. "Now for the fun part," he said, "Snacks are a vital part of the modern television experience. Sometimes, it's entire meals, pizza and Chinese food." Mitchell was a great appreciator of the art. "But at this hour, that may be pushing it. Crisps," he picked up a bag and waved it around, "Are excellent television chow. I want you all to pick what looks like it may taste good, and if you're not sure, ask your fellow classmates about it." He set the bag down. "Today is all about people. About audiences, which we all are when we're watching the television. So go on, make yourself comfortable. Be an audience, meet people, see what the social contexts are all about."

He took a seat on his own couch. "Have fun. That's what television's all about."

"Good afternoon, class!" Minsc, of course, seemed in the most excitable of spirits as the class came into the Danger Shop this week, the setting looking an awful lot like the clearing they were in last week, but with an assortment of long-range weapons rather than . "Today, we talk about one of the most essential parts of being a good ranger, and that is...of course!....buttkicking! But, more specifically, it is buttkicking was a proficiency in certain weapons. Now, I noticed last week that many of you are already very proficient in swords and the like, but what a ranger really needs is an equal proficiency in a range weapons. They are range-ers, after all!"

"So here we have a collection of different range weapons. Some of you mentioned being trained with guns and lasers, pew pew, but rangering is an older art, so we will use older weapons! We've got bows, crossbows, some very nice slings, and darts." And, yes, those last ones were big giant lawn darts; Minsc had messed up a little with the Danger Shop programming.

"I would not be surprised if some of you already have a proficiency in one of these long-range weapons already. If so, try one you're not as familiar with. Or, instead of just going for the targets, I can put you in a real battle with a beastie form the programming, and what you can do there is work on being able to fight an enemy who, unlike the targets, won't just stay put, so you'll have to work on potentially switching in and out between weapons for a more efficient kill!"

"Off to the side, there are also practise swords and staffs. If you are done with target practise, it is good to keep up your other work, and you may choose to spar with each other! I actually encourage this, as no ranger should get rusty! Well, then! Have at it! And if there are any questions, please just ask! TO ARMS!"

"Good afternoon everyone!" Glinda had apparently decided that the weather called for pink, even though she had handwavily informed everyone that class would be in the Danger Room. "I hope you don't mind, but I found a video on the Internet that will cover this week's topic: how to most effectively use your voice in public speaking situations!" She gestured towards the chairs and the table of - you guessed it - lemonade and cookies. This week the cookies were chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons.

"And before we begin," she continued, "I want to let you naughty scamps know that I still haven't heard what anyone wants to use as a speech topic! You need to let me know by the end of class or I will be assigning topics. Now. Let's get started."

Glinda cued up the video... and then promptly had a horrified look on her face.

[OCD will be up shortly, and as an FYI SP is the name of my game today]

It worked out kind of perfectly that both Joan and Turtle had Public Speaking together fourth period so that they could get together after that and spend all of fifth period getting things set up for the Multi-Cultural Fair. Not that there was too much to do. There was a small, but still very good (and diverse!) amount of table to set up for the participants, which gave more time for them to put up posters about the event and take advantage of all the really neat decorations that Turtle had brought over, of course, from Turtle & Canary.

All and all, the thing was pretty cool, if they did say so themselves, so now people could just come and enjoy (okay, or gawk) at everyone else's culture.

[[ ocd obviously, is on the way is now very cultured! ]]
