When the students come in, they find a sign in sheet and a pile of handouts just inside the door with a sign that said "Sign in and take one."

Once everyone had done so and was settled, John leaned against the desk at the front of the room and regarded his students.

Welcome to Hunting 101 )

At the end of the class, John collected the devices he'd shown the class and said, "Next week will be our first practical class and we will be meeting in the Danger Room. You'll get your first chance to track and dispose of a ghost. Everything you will need to know to do so was covered in this class," he grinned wolfishly, "so I hope you were paying attention."

Week 1 -- September 6: Introduction: Overview of the Solar System, its origin and layout

When the class arrived in the newly refurbished attic classroom, Monty Python's "The Galaxy Song was playing and Ellie was humming along. She was wearing a black t-shirt with an image of the Milky Way Galaxy and a "You are here" arrow. There was a stack of textbooks beside her, along with CDs of a an astronomy program.

"Hi!" Ellie said, smiling broadly. "Welcome to Astronomy 101. I recognize some of you from my summer camp workshops and I'm glad I didn't scare you away by talking too much. Today we're just going to go over a brief introduction to the Solar System, and then I'll show you around the telescope. You'll find the Hartmann text is a little out of date since Pluto was just demoted. But most of the facts should remain the same, and even in the chapter on Pluto there is the debate on just whether it should be a planet or not. Also, the program I'm giving you is a great resource for learning to spot constellations and the planets. Have fun with it."

After having the students introduce themselves, Ellie went on to lecture about the formation and layout of the Solar System. "For fun, check out this website," she said as she finished the lecture. She wrote the URL on the board. "You can create your own little Solar System. And make the planets crash into each other."

Ellie beckoned the students toward a door in the back of the classroom. Stair led upward into another room with a retractable domed roof. "This is Maria," she said, sweeping her arm toward the large telescope that dominated the room. "If you come to the observation lab tonight, we can take a look at a few objects. The moon will be full and we can take a look at the Andromeda Galaxy. I hope I see you all there! Observation Lab attendance is ten percent of your grade, but I hope you learn to enjoy it, too."

Abby settled on the front desk in the computer lab and smiled at the class. "Welcome to Internet for Dummies. Which is not an insult or anything, just my attempt at being funny."

She looked out over the class. "This would be the part where you all agree and laugh along with me."

"Today we're going to take it slow. Especially considering that not everyone here knows how to use computers. So we're going to team up and do reports on what the internet is all about." Abby read off the groups lists and waited for everyone to move around.

"I want you guys to talk about what you already know about the internet. What it does, how it helps you and what you want to learn from it." Abby passed out handouts. "If you don't know about the internet, then you can use this handy piece of paper as a cheat sheet."

Angela came in a little late, clutching a mug of chai and a bagel like lifelines. She loaded a copy of the Sims into her "new" laptop and started trying to keep a very whiny miniature couple alive.

The library was open.

After Ms. Readman came in, Angela put a stack of applications on the counter and waited to see who would appply.

When students arrived in the Danger Shop, they would find it set up to look like the interior of an old canvas tent -- not a pup tent, but the kind you would find at the base camp of an archaeological dig site from the late 1930s or early 1940s. Piles of crates lined the walls at varying degrees of dubious balance, and inexplicably a large Gatling gun (sans ammunition) stood on a tripod opposite the door. Next to the Gatling, behind a desk cluttered with artifacts and notes, sat Janice with her booted feet up on the desk, her fedora down over her eyes, and an unlit cigar clenched in her teeth.

There you are, she said finally. )

Once the parchment had made its rounds, Janice tucked her thumbs into her belt and surveyed the class again before speaking. "So. We'll keep it pretty basic today. Who you are, when and where you're from, why you're in this class, and a brief rundown of what exactly you know so far about the myths and stories of this time period. After that, we've got a little activity to do."

The skies had been partly cloudly all day, but as night fell, the clouds dissipated, at least for a little while. Ellie headed up to the attic and opened up the classroom for her students and any others who might want to observe the night skies.

[ooc: open to Astronomy 101 students, of course, but any other students who want to take a look through Fandom High's brand spankin' new telescope are welcome!]

Admiral Honor Harrington was seated on the corner of the desk at the front of the room, feet brushing the floor. She wore her casual attire today -- fitted tee shirt and cargo pants -- with a reinforced rainjacket draped over the chair behind her. Without the rainjacket, Nimitz was resigned to sprawling out across the desk beside her, watching with interest as the students filter into the classroom.

On the table to the right, the usual coffee, hot chocolate, water, and tea had been set up just beyond the sign-in sheet for the day. "No need to be shy," Honor said with a wry smile. She brushed the tip of her nose with a hooked index finger. "Sign-in, feel free to grab a cup of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or water, and take a seat. We'll get started in just a few moments."

After a few moments, Honor glanced toward the clock -- just as the minute hand ticked over from 10:59. 'All right then, let's be about it.' )

Pausing, she watched as Nimitz crawled once again out of her arms, moving back onto the desk. With one true-hand, he picked up and began munching on a small stalk of celery Honor had left for him. Honor then leaned back against the desk, folding her arms across her chest. "So, as you can see, there are a lot of questions. I'm not sure I have all the answers. It's your responsibility to find those for yourself. I hope that this class will provide a backdrop for that." Her eyes darted to the clock. "And, now that I'm sure I've bored you to tears, you're dismissed. I'll be available for a few minutes after class if you have any questions."

[Okay, a little long winded. I promise they won't all be like this. Please wait for the OCD! OCD up!]

If there was one thing Darth Vader excelled at, it was making a memorable first impression.

He waited until the classroom was full, then stalked in, cape flaring behind him.

He twitched his fingers as he reached the center of the room and the door slammed shut behind him.

"I am Darth Vader," he intoned over the even mechanized breathing of his suit. "I trust you have already heard of me." His masked face scanned the faces in front of him. If he was at all affected by the negative thoughts and emotions being directed at him, he wasn't showing it. "You will refer to me as either Darth Vader or Lord Vader. Any other address will result in detention." He began pacing the room. "You should be grateful for that. Very few have ever been granted advanced warning of my actions.

"Today we discuss how far over the line you would go to save someone you love." Vader's voice turned cold. "I don't want to hear that you wouldn't go over a line. Would you lie for someone? Steal for them? Kill for them? Does it matter to you if it's friend or family? Does how much you love--" and yes, the word sounded awkward coming from that particular visage, "--that person affect how far you would go for them?"

Vader crossed his arms over his chest and waited for the first student to speak.
