Chloe was back on the laptop this morning when everyone came in, drinking what was clearly not her first cup of coffee.

Week 6: Fanfiction )

Elliot is perched on her desk as the students file in.

"Hey. This is your next to last week. If you're enjoying it, I'll be around next term teaching a more advanced version of this stuff. If you aren't? At least now you know what to do if you ever come across a badger with a dislocated shoulder.

Today we're talking about burns. The severity of a burn depends upon its size, depth and location. Burns are most severe when located on the face, neck, hands, feet and genitals, when they are spread over large parts of the body or when they are combined with other injuries. Burns can lead to pain, infection and shock. They are most serious when the victims are very young or very old.

More behind the cut. )

[Roster]

On the table by the unlighted campfire this time is an array of snacks - but the choices range a wee bit from Xander's usual fare of sweet, sweet, and more sweet with a side order of occasionally-healthy-but-still-sweet. There's some sweet stuff there, but it's surrounded by things like Cinnamon Altoids, mega-sour Warheads, a couple of bags of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, and really, really, really salty licorice.

Xander, his fingers finally de-splinted, waves a hand at the spread. "Help yourselves; it's there if you need a little inspiration for today's activity. Which is a really, really hard one, so you'll need a lot of practice - lemme demonstrate." He pops a piece of salty black licorice into his mouth, and makes a face.

After chewing and swallowing with a grimace, he says, "Words are great; I love words. They're pretty essential for stuff like lying and talking yourself out of kidnap situations. But sometimes on a team, you're just not gonna be able to express yourself in words. Maybe because the bad guys might hear you, or maybe because you know if you open your mouth you're gonna tell your team leader exactly what you think of that plan, and that might not be the brightest thing to do at that moment which never tends to stop me -- but you've got to do something. That's where a repertoire of expressive faces comes in handy."

Xander grabs an Atomic Fireball and drops that in his mouth, then makes another face. "Get the idea? You don't have to use the candy; it's just there if you need it. What I want you guys to do today is talk to each other about anything you want -- but no actual talking. You only get to talk with your face, not your voice."

[OCD up! Play away!]

Jay was absolutely nowhere to be found. Moping about the lack of a certain pink-clad blonde? Possibly. Silent Bob didn’t look too concerned about it, so the situation was under control.

Today’s lesson was brought to the girls by the words “scripts” and “storyboards”. At least, that’s what Silent Bob had written on the board when they arrived. With a grin and a flourish, he revealed the sample storyboard he had made, entitled ‘Skater Dude’s Adventure’. Stick figures enacted the adventures of a dude on a skateboard – clearly cribbed from the footage that had made Sakurazaki blush last week – interspersed with notes on where to put an interview, where to put in shots to set a scene or mood, where to add a title slide or a bit of information. He added to it as he went, showing the girls how to build one of their own.

Next up was the example bit. It was ‘Supersize Me’ and ‘Bowling for Columbine’ that Silent Bob used to show how to use the different elements to make a point more effectively. The transition between the McDonald’s “fun facts” to footage of the documentary filmmaker to interviews to stock or historical footage, for example.

Hoping that the girls got it by now, he handed them some storyboard templates and broke the silence of the lesson. “So, uh, the last workshop is in two weeks so you can show off. Next week is the last chance you’ll get to edit and finish up your documentary, but I’ll hang around a bit early that last day if you need to make final touches.” He reconsidered. “Actually, no. We’ll make the expo the last half of the workshop just in case.” He pointed to the storyboards. “So you need to finish up your storyboards and scripts by next week so you know what you’re doing.”

Surprised at the length of that speech, he fell silent again and offered them both a thumbs-up and a proud smile. They were doing great and he was starting to really like this teaching thing.

[[I am a dip and thought I had one less week than I really did. So today’s lesson should have been last week’s . . . oi. He was high, alright? There’s your explanation. No OCD today. Go forth and frolic!]]

"Greetings my most excellent students," Ted greeted them all with a huge grin. "This week I hope you'll all enjoy story time with your complimentary pudding cups!" He handed them out to everyone and then took his seat around the fire. No one knew how Ted managed to start a fire every week without starting a forest fire. "So! Today I've got a story about the bodacious blonde babe Snow Vhite and the Seven Dwarves. Not to be confused with her similar but brunette cousin Snow White."
