Sociology of Violence: 2nd Period

"Welcome, everyone. Veronica, thank you for covering class last week."

*handwave* Grissom launches into a lecture on Gang Violence *handwave*

"Now, as I mentioned, gangs tend to adopt colors, or other means of identification. For discussion today, I'd like you to describe a gang symbol that you have seen, whether in your life or through the media, and discuss why you believe it was or is used by that group."

Homework: Read Community and Institutional Responses to the Youth Gang Problem by Irving A. Spergel and Ron L. Chance.

Sociology of the Paranormal: 6th Period

"Hello, class. Bel, I appreciate your efforts last week, covering the class. I have also recorded all your grades from the quiz."

Grissom then give Marty a sorrowful look. A C-? Woe.

*handwave* Grissom launches into a lecture on Out-of-Body Experiences *handwave*

"Now unfortunately, I'm not allowed to give you all ketamine or put you through extreme sensory deprivation or a near death experience, so we can't replicate the condition as a lab assignment," Grissom says with a grin, because seriously, drugs are bad and he's obviously kidding.

"However, as out-of-body experiences are far more prevalent than many other types of paranormal activity, if any of you have had these experiences, or know someone who has, I'd like you to share. And if not, I'd ask you to discuss why or why not you believe in the concept."

Homework: Grissom hands out a packet to read for Wednesday. Very. Serious. Reading. Kind of. Also, please bring your jackets and weather appropriate clothes. As long as it doesn't rain, we'll be outside.

[IMPORTANT: For next class, I need you to read this short post and leave a comment there. Please, please. It's going to be fun, and it's very easy! I promise.]

As the students enter the Danger Shop, they'll see that Mac has set up what appears to be a long hallway. On a table there by the hallway are an assortment of cleaning products and other goods that you could pick up at your local Kwik Stop.

Yes. There are Twinkies.

"Your assignment today is to come up a way to walk down this hallway. The only trick to this is that there are several security lasers scattered about the hallway at different heights and angles. Your job is to come up with a way to detect the lasers and navigate the hallway without tripping the alarm."

The following Students will have detention this week for missing class more than three times in a row:

"Good morning. Today we will begin discussing the mathematics behind chemistry."

In chemistry, we use symbols to represent the various chemicals. Success in chemistry depends upon developing a strong familiarity with these basic symbols. For example, the symbol "C" represents an atom of carbon, and "H" represents an atom of hydrogen. To represent a molecule of table salt, sodium chloride, we would use the notation "NaCl", where "Na" represents sodium and "Cl" represents chlorine. We call chlorine "chloride" in this case because of its connection to sodium. You should have reviewed naming schemes, or nomenclature, in earlier readings.

A chemical equation is an expression of a chemical process. For example:

AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) ---> AgCl (s) + NaNO3(aq)

In this equation, AgNO3 is mixed with NaCl. The equation shows that the reactants (AgNO3 and NaCl) react through some process (--->) to form the products (AgCl and NaNO3). Since they undergo a chemical process, they are changed fundamentally.

Often chemical equations are written showing the state that each substance is in. The (s) sign means that t he compound is a solid. The (l) sign means the substance is a liquid. The (aq) sign stands for aqueous in water and means the compound is dissolved in water. Finally, the (g) sign mean s that the compound is a gas.

Coefficients are used in all chemical equations to show the relative amounts of each substance present. This amount can represent either the relative number of molecules, or the relative number of moles (described below). If no coefficient is shown, a one (1) is assumed.

On some occasions, a variety of information will be written above or below the arrows. This information, such as a value for temperature, shows what conditions need to be present for a reaction to occur. For example, in the graphic below, the notation above and below the arrows shows that we need a chemical Fe2O3, a temperature of 1000 degrees C, and a pressure of 500 atmospheres for this reaction to occur.

"Your homework is to work the problems at the end of the fifth chapter in your textbooks. On Wednesday, we will learn how to balance equations. Have a good day."

"Good morning. Today we will begin discussing the various ways living creatures use and transform energy."

Energy cycle: Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants convert sunlight, water, nutrients, and carbon dioxide into carbohydrates (which also releases oxygen into the atmosphere). Plants and photosynthetic bacteria transform energy from the sun into stored chemical energy, which is the foundation for virtually all food webs.

Water cycle: The refers to the circulation, transformation, and replenishment of fresh water from all of Earth’s ecosystems. Forests, for example, moderate water flows by catching, holding and recycling rainwater. Plants release absorbed rainwater into the air through the loss of water through their leaves, called transpiration. In addition, wetlands and estuaries purify water and control flooding. Cattails, for example, catch and filter rainfalls and stream flows, remove toxins and gradually release water into creeks and rivers.

"Hello.

I hope you all enjoyed speaking with Racso on Thursday. You showed a nice grasp of conversational Rat.

For class today, I would like for you to pair up with someone you have not worked with in this class before and attempt to carry on a conversation in Rat about the events of this past weekend.

I am told there was singing. You do not need to sing in Rat.

Take notes on your conversations, as they will feed into a group project we will begin on Thursday.

I will be holding office hours this afternoon should you have questions.

The Announcements for the day are announced during lunch, today. Dewey really doesn't get that whole 'Wake Up Early' thing.

"Howdy doodley-doo, kids. Did anyone else feel the spirit of rock taking hold of them this Saturday? I totally broke into some kick ass tunes. And this got me to thinkin', kiddos. And that leads us to my first announcement.

A week from Saturday, that'd be the 18th, I think, the Auditorium will be hosting a very special event. An event called auditions. We will be putting on a little play, kiddos. Since this is a very unique school, we'll be putting on a very unique play. Now, I was thinking, it needed pirates. And Ninjas. And some rockin' guitar.

So, we will putting on a very special production called 'Dewey Finn's Pirates and Ninjas of Penzance'. So, noon o clock sharp, auditions in the auditorium. Bring your rockin' voice and your acting skills. More details later.

Oh, and teachers are supposed to turn in attendancey type things to the office today.

Mr. Belty-sore? If'n you want to talk to me, I shall be in my office the rest of the day.

Oh, and I heard something about study groups and vampires or something? If somebody wants to explain that to me, I'm in my office. If you don't, that's cool too. I just want to know if I should be eating more garlic or something. Yeah.

Oh, so that's the announcements. Today, they were brought to you by the words 'Spinal' and 'Tap'. Because today, the announcements went to eleven, which is one louder. G'day kiddies."

TRUST

301--3rd period

Today we're bringing in the role of trust in the S/M/R paradigm. Why is it important/ How does one gain or lose it? And what happens when it's broken? Discuss.

*** *** *** *** *** *** ***

401--5th period

Last term we did trust and confronted personal space issues and secrets. Now we're moving on to marketing and public relations...how does a business engender trust? To what end? How do trust and layalty go hand in hand? Discuss.

Josh stopped playing with spreadsheets full of Montana voter information when the history class began arriving.

"Good to see you all looking so awake and eager to learn. Or faking it really well." He waved his hands. "Whichever. Doesn't really matter to me. Bit of housekeeping. A few of you missed the test we had last Wednesday. I'll be holding office hours this week--on Wednesdays, as usual--if you need to make it up."

He picked up his notes. "Enough of that. On with the show."

Articles of Confederation: Still not working )

The Librarian, who has not been seen in a little over a week, stumbles out of Special Collections looking somewhat war-torn, including a ragged bandage wrapped around his right forarm. Trailing behind him, on a chain leash, is a book, tightly bound with more chain and what appears to be duct tape.

Realizing he doesn't have an office, the Librarian sets up in a corner of the library and, after placing a heavy brick on the bound book, sets out a sign that says, "Office Open."

If one were to pay close attention, they might notice the book perhaps tremble and, occassionally, growl. Regardless of one's book observation skills, the full-grown male orangutan poking the book gleefully with a sharp stick from time to time is very obvious.

He seems quite pleased today.

OOC Notes )
[identity profile] dr-tommy.livejournal.com
Tommy's sitting on the edge of his desk as the students come in to the classroom. Once class starts, he hops up and begins pacing the front of the room as he speaks.

"All right, so as you all know- we're going on a field trip sometime this semester. What you don't know is that it's in a few weeks. Leading up to that, we're going to start delving in to some more hands-on stuff. Today I want to talk about selecting potential sites. What sorts of considerations do you think we need to take in to account? And I'm talking about more than just 'there should be fossils there'. What if the area we want to study is difficult to access because of geographical reasons? Or even political ones?"

"No presentations today, just hand in your homework."
[identity profile] ten-and-chips.livejournal.com
The Doctor does have a case of the Mondays as does the mun zomg. A bad one. He leans on the podium and looks...tired.

"Right. So. Your things. Or, if we're going to be all academic about it, your 'cultural artifacts'. They should be related to your chosen area of study, but still be interesting. I want you to stand up and talk about it for a bit. Tell me why it's important, how it's involved with your choice, and why you particularly chose this artifact among others. Okay? Impromptu presentations in high school are nothing compared to time travel, so if you can't master this, there's no hope for you." He sounds like he's kidding during that last bit.

"Jack, if you brought LSD, I don't want to know where you got it certainly not from that room in the TARDIS, and you need to put it in your pocket and burn it later. Wednesday we'll be talking about some more scientific ends to this project."

((If you do one homework assignment all term, this should be it. If you love me, take five minutes to dig up a picture or upload a song or pretend to play a video, and another five to handwavily describe why your character chose this...IC. Do it for Rhi.))

Camulus is back in black and looking rather well-rested. He spent the whole weekend asleep in his sarcophagus, thereby missing the all-singing, all-dancing, all-amusing chaos.

"Madainn mhath," he says when the class has assembled. "My thanks to Miss Halliwell, who I understand led you in a discussion of The Sorrow of Deirdre, a story which I studied with my class last semester but was not planning on this semester, as we will not have enough time to fully discuss the Ulster Cycle of tales. I hope she told you all about your quiz today. Because you have one." He begins handing them out. "Books away, this shouldn't take long, I should expect you all to do well if you've paid attention in class."

The quiz. )

"Now, for today's lecture. We'll be beginning on the mythical history of Ireland, starting with the Lebor Gabala, the Book of Invasions, which chronicles the settling of Ireland. Unlike most other cultures, the Celts don't have an origin myth. If they did, it was subsumed in the Christian myth of Genesis and disappeared. That is why the founding of Ireland is said to have been done by the descendents of Noah. Who I understand built some sort of large ship of holding to survive a flood." He frowns, looking at his notes. "I should read this Bible thing some time." He continued the lecture. )

"I realise this is quite a bit of information. Any questions about the material?"

And now for a word from our mun. )

Daniel is looking slightly tired today. He's distractedly running his hand along the cast on his wrist

"Today, we're talking Neandertals. They were the most well-known late archaic Homo sapiens.

What do we know about them?"

At the end of the class, he smiled. "Homework from last week on my desk, please. Homework tonight, is just to continue with your reading about the evolution of modern humans, ready for Thursday's lesson."
